NFT: Georgetown Coach Search - Shaka Smart and Mike Brey Out

kash94 : 5:03 pm
Apparently Georgetown reached out to both to see if there was any interest in discussing the open coaching gig; both, however, declined. Apparently they straight up offered Smart the job if he wanted it but he declined.

Remaining Candidates Based on Rumors:

1- Amaker - Still the favorite at this point. Not sure how I feel about him.

2- Ewing - Up there with the top candidates. May not want to leave the NBA though.

3- (Richard) Pitino - There was a rumor that Rick Pitino contacted Georgetown about the position. Pitino seems to want the job but unclear how interested Georgetown is.

4- Dan Hurley - Apparently Georgetown is very interested in him but not sure how mutual it is at this point.

5- Ed Cooley - Basically out at this point. Said publicly he'd stay at Prov.

6- Jamion Christian - A rumor...not really sure how legit this is.

7- Tom Crean - Popular rumor of course given his name but no clue how legitimate a candidate he is.

Jeff Goodman said this morning that the Georgetown job has commanded a lot of interest but some coaches are wary of how much influence JT Jr has on the program.
I think Amaker is a good fit
He's got a good rep and it will be fun to see him back in the Big East. Remember when he had (the late) Eddie Griffin and Ty Shine at the Hall?
I think your list may be a bit off

Public reaction among the fan base toward the idea of Amaker has been swift, strong, and negative. I have heard no credible rumors of him being considered, other than writers spewing ideas.

It seems Randy Bennett of St Mary's should be on your list, and perhaps high on it.

From the little I have read, I would probably put Ewing and Bennett as the most likely candidates at this point in time, though not necessarily front runners.
I would be surprised if Bennett left St. Mary's to go to an
east coast school. The Hoyas job is obviously better, but that would be a pretty drastic move for a guy who's been at that school so long.

Pitino has done a good job with Minnesota, but I would worry about him using the job as a stepping stone.
As a URI alum

There is a lot of talk on the message boards about Hurley getting an offer.

URI's AD announced this week that they're working on an extension but that would just be a formality if Hurley was indeed offered.

It would be a shame for the URI program that finally took a step in the right direction this year with the bones of something to build on, but to be fair, no one is flashing a few million dollars in front of my face. Not to mention a much higher profile gig in a top conference.

Personally, I think Hurley's dream job is Seton Hall and I hope he stays at URI until that opens up.

Ah got it - thanks!
Do you Georgetown guys give any credence to the notion that....
Crispino : 5:34 pm : link
Ewing is too close to the Thompsons to be given the job? I've seen on Casual Hoya a lot of opinions that the program has to move on from the Thompson regime, and that Ewing would be seen as just an extension of the same regime. Any thoughts on this?
I think I'm less enthused by Amaker, Ewing, and Bennett...
versus the rest of the field. I'd love Hurley so long as he can recruit while I'd love Grant so log as he can coach...undecided re: Pitino
I'd pass on Ewing, Crispino...
because A) he's never demonstrated his recruiting chops, B) if the admin found it difficult to break up with JTIII then imagine how difficult it would be to fire the best player in school history if things go sour.

This is where I'm at.

I have a feeling that Shaka is going to regret turning that down if that is indeed the truth that he was offered.

Same
What about Josh Pastner?
B in ALB : 6:23 pm : link
He's done a pretty amazing job with a not very good GA Tech team. Plus, he has a good pedigree playing under Lute Olson and coaching Memphis. He's from WV I think which isn't too far from the mid-Atlantic base.

I actually read this from college writers I trust - that Danny Hurley was up there with Shaka and Brey in terms of Georgetown's interest. Complete opposite of JTIII in every way but also a possible meltdown waiting to happen.
They tried to steal Mike Brey???
MetsAreBack : 7:41 pm : link

I mean, cant blame them for trying i guess.
At first I thought you were talking about Rick Pitino from Louisville
Jerz44 : 7:57 pm : link
that'd be nice...
Coach with More Uptempo System
Jeffrey : 9:30 pm : link
After many years of Princeton offense and more recently being teased by a system change that lasted about 7-8 games this year, it would be nice to find a coach with a fast-paced offense and pressure defense. Thinking of Keats and Wade but they are gone. Christian would be interesting and how could the Jesuits turn down a Christian? Not interested in Amaker (been there ,done that), Ewing (great alum, no experience coaching college) Hurley (edgy and explosive), or Bennett (plays slower offense than Princeton).
Paul Tagliabue is in charge
Rich in L.A. : 11:51 pm : link
of the coaching search along with (I think) the A.D. I am completely uninterested in Amaker; 6 years at Michigan (another big program) didn't exactly bear excellent results. He's no better than JT III was.

I think Ewing is a pro guy and diving into the college game with all that comes with it (recruiting especially) is suboptimal for both parties. The Hoyas need a guy with proven college results. They can't afford another debacle with another entrenched name from the program's history.

Hurley, Bennett, Pitino (Richard), the Mt. St Mary's HC (name escapes me; not to be confused with St. Mary's' Bennett)... lot of interesting names out there.
I don't see the love for the Mt. St. Mary's coach

An NEC coach doesn't usually get to make this kind of jump - Dan Hurley went from Wagner to URI not a former blueblood. Jamison has made two tournaments, but he was gifted a pretty easy run in the NEC this year. They did go out and play people, but it feels like he should be going back to VCU first.

Bennett is not leaving UVA and the ACC .... for what used to be the Big East and Georgetown. Come the fuck on now people. He just turned down Indiana for crying out loud.

Richard Pitino is interesting because of his family name - he's had one good season at Minnesota (how they were seeded a 5 and not a 7 or 8 i will never understand), you'd want to see a little more first before anyone pursues that name. And even then, is Georgetown a better job than Minnesota? Not sure.
Nobody is talking about
bigbluehoya : 3/29/2017 8:59 am : link
The UVA coach. The only Bennett being mentioned is the coach of St Mary's.

I'm warming up to Christian from Mt. Saint Mary's...
BurberryManning : 3/29/2017 9:11 am : link
He's young, hungry, has roots in the area, plays an aggressive brand of ball, and would likely come cheap.

Hurley is probably my top choice at this point but I'd prefer Jamion over a retread like Amaker.

Let's hope he stays at URI. They have a lot of potential again next year.
I think Ewing with some high college
