Mac: "Fluker will compete at RT and both guard spots"

Toastt34 : 3/28/2017 10:32 pm
Thought this was an interesting quote today. Is there a contingency plan in place with Fluker at LG kicking Pugh out to one of the tackle spots?

Pugh/Flowers-Fluker-Richburg-Jerry-Flowers/Pugh

Probably reading too much into it and I doubt they would move Pugh but just a thought after that quote. Regardless, Fluker brings some depth at good value on the OL.
That says to me more than anything
NoGainDayne : 3/28/2017 10:41 pm : link
that their contingency plan for Flowers might be to move Pugh to LT and Flowers to RT.

Given the high pay that guards are getting it might be a good move strategy wise with the cap. You might rather Pugh at 10-11 M to be a T than 8-9 M to be a guard.
Good.
ZGiants98 : 3/28/2017 10:48 pm : link
Pugh is our best offensive lineman and LG is not our most important position on the line. Im completely fine with moving him around.
The idea I like......
George from PA : 3/28/2017 11:02 pm : link
But not crazy that entire left side would be FAs next year
Ideally
mrvax : 3/28/2017 11:03 pm : link
Fluker would be coached up and play RT at a decent level. No doubt the run game will dramatically improve.

Reading way too much into it

Giants like OL to practice multiple positions
Pugh will not play tackle
Tuckrule : 3/29/2017 4:59 am : link
He will hit free agency and then ask to be paid like a tackle. From business standpoint alone it doesn't make sense unless they don't plan on resigning him. It's like the Yankees not bringing up Torres right now who would clearly help but they don't want to start the clock
Y'all only reading one
section125 : 3/29/2017 6:39 am : link
comment from Mc. Pretty much says elsewhere that Flowers is LT..
As was said. The Giants like their OL to play multiple positions. Probably also means Pugh is backup LT and Fluker could move to LG and not LT.
Nothing is etched in stone,
Big Blue '56 : 3/29/2017 8:25 am : link
but if it were, Flowers WILL BE our OLT this year. I expect him to improve, possibly a lot, with one more year under Solari..If he doesn't, we will have this conversation next year as to where he and the Giants go from there.

Like it or not, that's reality imv, so I believe we can safely say the left side of the line is set come hell or high water..
Wasn't that long ago we had 12 different configs on the OL
mattlawson : 3/29/2017 8:39 am : link
And won a lot of games despite that. Whatever works.
You have to put the best line out there
superspynyg : 3/29/2017 8:57 am : link
So it makes sense to move people around in camp add see which is best. I still do not think our line is complete and we will add a ol in draft or after.
That says to me Pugh, Flowers, and Fluker will jump around in camp
Blue21 : 3/29/2017 9:14 am : link
to find the best fit. If I had to guess unless they draft a very good tackle it will be Flowers LT Pugh at his G position and Fluker at RT. I'm not expecting Mangold to come to the Giants either.
I like the idea of Fluker at RG. Helps get push in the run game
Victor in CT : 3/29/2017 9:17 am : link
helps the weak Richburg in pass pro. And if Richburg makes me eat crow (I hope he does!) and becomes an elite C, and Pugh actually stays healthy and plays at a high level for all 16 games, then the interior of the OL is set.

I'm not ready to give up on Hart at RT yet. And who knows who they may draft. The starting RT may not be on the roster yet.
Not sure how practical this really is
Bob in Newburgh : 3/29/2017 9:20 am : link
Unless Fluker is really dumb (cannot learn playbook) or has foot quickness slower than Hart it is really hard to imagine him not winning the RT position from Hart right out of the gate.

So then the question becomes "do you want to crap around with him"?

I would rather have a solid or better starting RT than a player who can play 3 positions, sort of.

I would love to see Fluker win the RG job
Jay on the Island : 3/29/2017 9:22 am : link
and the Giants add an OT to start at RT or a LT and shift Flowers over to the right side. Fluker and Flowers on the right side would be a very good run blocking duo.

Fluker is known as a bit of a slow footed plodder, to be honest. Actually I think he has a lot in common with flowers. He plays a power game.
And your claim is that Hart is not?
Bob in Newburgh : 3/29/2017 11:04 am : link
Unless a miracle occurred, Hart is the definition of a slow-footed plodder.

Fluker's combine or pro day 40 was perfectly adequate for an OT. I know that 40 does not directly translate to foot quickness, but there is some correlation.

From what I have read, we really do not know why Fluker was shifted from RT at SD.
I guess Francesa was right
djm : 3/29/2017 11:12 am : link
that annoys me.

I didn't say anything about Hart. I don't know one way the other about him. Incidentally Flowers and Fluker ran precisely the same 40 time. More on the of flowers probably being better off at RT long term

Incidentally Flowers and Fluker ran the same combine 40 time. 5.31
could also mean that Jerry will enter camp as the
giants#1 : 3/29/2017 12:06 pm : link
starting RG and thus Fluker is the primary backup for both OG spots and RT so he'll get practice snaps (i.e. 'compete') at all 3 positions.

It was mainly due to his slow feet, had trouble with speed rushers on the outside as well. They brought him inside at
guard. I think he is going to have to play tackle to start here though.
BTW, whether people like him or not, John Jerry is going to start here folks. He got a 3 year deal, with about
4.25 mill. GTD. I recall a few weeks ago saying, don't be surprised if John Jerry is back here, not being clairvoyant,
just could sense the way free agency was going. Call it intuition if you will, I said 2 years, 6.5 mill., with about
3.25 GTD. My guess, they needed to add the third year to get the deal done.
Flowers will stay at LG
nicky43 : 3/29/2017 1:04 pm : link
Bank on it. And don't count on any high o-line picks in the draft.

Yep. Thank you for the correction.

I'd like to see ....
Manny in CA : 3/31/2017 1:13 am : link

Either Fluker or Flowers (basically the same player) at RG or RT. They're both big & strong bulls that can crush defensive linemen - the right side is the running side, that's why.

Ideally, we can get Pro Bowler Joe Thomas away from the Browns to play LT ....

Just think - Thomas, Pugh, Richburg, Fluker, Flowers. I think we could do some serious damage with that lineup.
