He can throw once every 7 days for like 5 innings or so and slowly build himself up from that by mid-May.
Those "innings" would still count...
They would count somewhere. Mets keep track of all of that Im sure. Im guessing Mets keep track of actual pitches opposed to innings which could be a huge difference. If Sandy is publicly saying Wheeler can go 124-140 innings Im guessing he's speaking about ML innings. I mean every time a pitcher warms up counts too but how ridiculous do we want to get?
thing people are ignoring with Wheeler is he's yet to show he can go a consistent 5-6-7 innings so all things considered the best course of action is sending him to extended, letting him get a few 4 inning, 5 inning, 6 inning performances in. This way, if he has a few early issues with stamina (he runs high pitch counts as it is) then it's not a killer to the bullpen (especially missing Familia for the first 15).

against Paul Goldshmidt in the majors VS working on some sliders, fastballs, and changeups in the palm trees of Florida against nobody or some minor leaguers are two completely different animals. Sure, it's still factored somewhere but it's not the same as just adding a 25-30 innings in the majors on to the total.

Because in the minors they can skip starts, they can have him go 4-5 innings for a month. Not to mention St. Lucie is a 6 man rotation.
as an example in St. Lucie Zack Wheeler (if he were the opening day SP) would be making 4 starts in April. If you capped him at 5 innings per start that's only 20 innings pitched.
line is (and this is the same Wheeler in the pen). You can't expect Terry Collins to both focus on winning games and then restrain him. His SP are expected to be able to give him a consistent 90-100+ pitches. Something Zack Wheeler hasn't done in 2 full years, something he had trouble with (within 6-7 innings) even at full health. Can't really complain about overusing the pen and then also stick Wheeler in the rotation sight unseen.
likely ex-Met Mike Pelfrey will be released soon. I wouldn't hate seeing what he could do in the LV BP but he's been historically reluctant to try the BP.

This was kind of my point. I don't think another two months in PSL is going to make Wheeler a 7 inning pitcher.
If, and this is a big if, the Mets think Wheeler right now is one of their 5 best pitchers he should be in the major league rotation.
And I'd use him every 5th start until he is injured or reaches the innings limit.
From my perspective an April or May win count as much as a September win.
And when you miss the division by 1 game it could very much be due to the game in April you lost as it is the September high pressure high profile game.
Though I know people don't think that way generally. Though I think they should.
to rile up the Tebow stuff again but just an example of how he's being used... the Fireflies announced their Fan Fest "featuring Tim Tebow" and yet when I inquired into who else would be there (sneakily trying to decipher the roster) they said they didn't have any other names yet. That said, I can only imagine how many more people turn out to see Tebow than say Gene Cone lol
may yet end up a reliever but given the lack of SP depth + his #1 best spin rate on his CB in all of baseball in 2016.. I'd rather find out first. I mean different situation maybe a DeGrom or Gsellman are turned into relievers if they aren't given a chance as a SP, let's give Lugo that shot first.
if they come up with a plan thats something like I suggested. He's coming off a 2 year layoff so bringing him along slowly and building up his innings in a deliberate manner would seem to help him on the front end. On the backend if they cut him short 15-20 innings of his limit maybe he can pitch in the pen and be with the team all year. If you shut him down in July, you aren't going to start him back up again in October out of nowhere.

I agree. Would you send Lugo to AA so that his CB can work with normal air?

In theory yes, I mean even his own mother told me he "lost" his CB at some point last year in LV (they moved him to the pen for a while) but they seem inclined to let these guys deal with LV and tough through it (Wheeler complained about it quite a bit a few years back, LV not the Mets). Lugo is a very interesting case to me, low mileage due to a MAJOR back surgery so his age is less relevant. Like I said, I wouldn't bet my house he's not a reliever, I just would prefer he becomes one because that's what he is and not "well we could use a reliever so lets stick him there". Pennant race, 0 issue. All hands on deck. Early season lets see what he can do. It's not as if Harvey, Matz, Wheeler are proven to be healthy.

how with some regularity these primarily Dominican players "change" their names.
Roasrio added German last year before the Amed (or at least I'd never seen it until then), and in court documents Familia was known as "Jeurys F. Mojica" court documents usually need to be kind of official.

Who is Jeurys F. Mojica?
I forget how it works but with Latin America I think they take both their mother and fathers last names so his legal name is Jeurys Familia Mojica. Rosario (when he signed) was listed as German (his real first name) but his father called him Amed (his middle name) some Iranian actor or something so his name "changed" simply by virtue of what he preferred being called. His legal name is German Amed Rosario.
"NEW YORK -- The Mets moved quickly to make a splash on the first day of Major League Baseball's international signing period, investing more money in one player than ever before.
The Mets announced Monday that they have signed 16-year-old Dominican shortstop German Rosario to a $1.75 million contract, topping the $1.3 million they paid for former top prospect Fernando Martinez in 2005. Compare those figures to the $2.3 million the Mets paid for shortstop Gavin Cecchini, their top pick in last month's First-Year Player Draft."

Matz threw the last two days, still felt something in his elbow. Hence, the added test. TC thinks MRI. Either way, ruled out for OD.
They are not limited to innings with the big club. The include the minors and extended spring training. While we unpopular in DC, I think what the National did with Strasburg was correct.
i like Cespedes a lot, I think the rumors of him being a bad teammate were media manufactured garbage - probably from Boston since it's their MO whenever a player leaves.
And I said this:
Quote:
I'd make the trade again 100 times out of 100, but I hate seeing Fulmer on the Tigers.
At no point did I indicate Cespedes wasn't important or even more important to the Mets, it's just when my team drafts a player and I have followed him throughout his career in the minors, I get a certain satisfaction of seeing the player evolve into a "homegrown" star (and not saying Fulmer is a star yet, but he's on his way).
takes some of that sting away. Without Cespedes they don't make the playoffs and go to the WS 2 years ago so acquiring him was undeniably 1 of the big turning points for the franchise. Both teams are better off for that trade.
made the rotation. One of Lugo/Montero will be the final reliever (both traveled with the team). Lagares, Nimmo, Matz, Wright to the DL. Matz won't even be throwing for 3 weeks.

As assets, Fulmer is the more valuable chip over Cespedes. A true win/wiN trade-which is very uncommon
