NFT: Getting WiFi at my home in the Poconos

The 12th Man : 3/29/2017 1:30 pm
I do not have a landline for my phone or cable tv, nor do I want them. What I do want is how do I get Wifi without having to have either of them. Any ideas? I have friends and family who use the home during the summer when we are not there. Other than using there phones as hot spots is there anything else I can do?

You can rent hot spots, they ship, and they're like 30 bucks for a week of unlimited if the price is still the same.
You can get Internet

service from providers like verizon without getting phone or cable.

I used to have internet only from verizon, no home phone and "cable" from DirecTV.

Maybe get a Verizon MiFi?

Depends on what you want to pay

I have a seasonal home, I pay for wifi year round so I can keep an eye on the place with some cameras and thermostats. Barebones internet service isn't that expensive, but it's not cheap either (mine is $60/mo all in).

If you don't want to pay that, you're paying a hotspot, which based on utilization could get expensive.
I wouldn't leave a Mi-fi

in a rental house or even one where other people stay, that are "friends and family" even if it's not rented.

they're so portable, you will go there one day and it won't be there. The passwords are on the back of the device (at least it was for mine) and they're resettable, and you'd need to call verizon in cancel it if/when you notice it is missing. Think of it like leaving your cell phone, turned into a hot spot, in the house.

You can suspend your wifi service through Verizon or whoever if you only want it in the summer or some temporary time.

It's not that hard. I have a friend who rents out a house on Block Island, and he's got a hotspot which he includes in the leasing agreement with a quota of data. If the tenant damages or loses the hotspot in any way, he's on the hook to pay for it. If he exceeds his quota, he pays by the byte. Considering most of them have caps that can be applied to shut it down when it exceeds a certain threshold, it's not really a huge risk.

I didn't like the hotspot because of the reliability and speed of the connection in my case. And turning the internet access on and off, when we visit the house occasionally throughout the year and there's an administrative fee (last I checked $15 each time) to enable and disable it didn't prove to be worth the aggravation.
Does Blue Ridge cover your area?

You can check via the link below. It's pricey, but it works, and there isn't a lot of competition.

(Note: You need to scroll back down after selecting your location. For a "technology" company, BR has a sh!tty web site.

Is a company I have done installs for and they have a LOS antenna that can amplify OTA signals and then convert to Wi-Fi, if you're interested let me know, I'm not sure it's available unless you're certified to sell it.

Cut and paste from another thread.

My wife & I pay $115 for MetroPCS full service 4G phones. I use my phone for all my internet needs. It's usually running at 29Mbps and supplies my tethered laptop and a smart TV (thru OSToto Hotspot) for Netflix, Kodi, etc.

TMobile/MetroPCS has a 28Gb monthly limit at full speed. However, once I'm over that the decrease (throttle down) is minimal.

BTW: 1 phone like this is $60/month.
