(sensing a theme here...I guess I'm partial to piano and organ players)
I know this is a thread about OLD jazz greats, but I have to mention a new one I just found out about. He's a 13-year old prodigy from Indonesia named Joey Alexander. Pretty incredible. Joey Alexander - ( New Window )
Joey Alexander is ridonkulous. I just can't even fathom how old he is. He would be great for someone who has been playing for forty years... lol.
I am a huge fan of Coltranes original version of that, and this kid does it serious justice.
And the musicians he is playing with in that clip are pretty great themselves! Grenadier is a killer stand up player! And Ulysses Owens?? Umm... yeah... lol

Agreed on all counts. I saw his name when I was looking through this year's Jazzfest schedule and after checking his music out, I'm looking forward to seeing him more than anyone else. Hopefully, he has the same guys playing with him since it's billed as the Joey Alexander Trio.
Too many to list. I guess if we eliminate modern players, the first few that come to mind (in no order):

Coltrane
Bird
Monk
Wes
Joe Pass
Martino (old enough)
Mingus
Clifford Brown
Stephan Grappelli
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Wes Montgomery

Herbie Hancock
I'm very sure I've missed some that I'll think of.
