The 2018 draft is loaded with great quarterback prospects.
There are at least (4) projected " franchise -quarterbacks" in next years draft.
Perhaps the Giants should trade down this year and pick up additional picks for next year ?
“Next year’s draft,” one NFL personnel director said. “Next year’s draft is loaded.”
With less than a month to go before the 2017 NFL Draft, evaluators desperate for quarterback help are already peeking ahead to next year’s class. It could be a top heavy, which this year’s class isn’t. By top heavy, I mean franchise-quarterback heavy. |
The names being mentioned are Southern California’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Wyoming’s Josh Allen, who some scouts are already saying is the next John Elway. There are several others, like Washington’s Jake Browning, who could also play into the top quarterback argument. |

Are any of these prospects seen as can't-miss as Andrew Luck?
I think Suck for Luck was a one time thing.
He has the quickest release that I have ever seen.
It is not just his release, he seems to play faster than the other players. He has a strong arm and is extremely accurate.
Will be the number 1 pick overall next year

It's like when we picked Simms; I decided that Perkins was known as a QB guru, and I had to trust his judgment on that choice. A lot of folks wanted Jack Thompson and felt we'd reached for Simms once Thompson was selected, but Simms proved in the long run to have been the better choice...although some guy picked in the 3rd round is in the argument for the best QB of all time.
So sometimes a team with vision can strike gold.
It would be a good year to stock up with draft picks.
It's not a chance. Next year's crop is almost certainly going to be better just by virtue of this one being so weak.
I'm absolutely not against them picking a QB early this year, as I've said, but part of the problem is that there just isn't a good field to pick from. Several guys are just going to get over-drafted (like Christian Ponder or Blaine Gabbert) by desperate teams that will be right back in the QB draft hunt in a year or two because of their mistake.
When was he considered a first round pick?
There's also the Florida State and Louisville QB's, both pretty big X factors. Deondre Francois looked good as a redshirt freshman, and most people in Tallahassee are expecting a big season from him. And Lamar Jackson, who I'm sure most around here will poo-poo, I expect to make himself eligible for next years draft.
If these quarterbacks were eligible for the 2017 draft they would likely be drafted before Watson and Trubisky.
I prefer drafting to the strength of a draft.

Allen might be able to throw the ball into low earth orbit.
While standing on one leg and hopping away from all 11 defenders, he's the absolute deal. He should be, barring injury the top pick in next year's draft.
Agreed. We've got a whole season in front of us. Anything can happen. We seen a lot of players anointed next year's #1, who really fall off by the time the draft starts. But Allen looks phenomenal.
Next year's class looks so good, it makes me wonder if some teams like the Jets might just hold off until then. The Jets are in full blown rebuild mode. They're going to stink this season, but therefore be in a good position to grab Allen or another QB in a loaded class. So why not build up the rest of the team this year instead of drafting a QB?
Also, IMO the FSU and L'ville QBs are better compared to Jerod Evans and Josh Dobbs than any first rounder. They have some pretty big flaws.
Unless mortgaging the farm or whole draft to move up.

As opposed to drafting high right now? We pick 23rd. Any of the 5 guys that I mentioned has a chance of falling next year and they're much better QBs than anyone in this class, IMO. I would be very pissed off if we draft a QB on Day One or Day Two this year.

I couldn't disagree more with that. Evans only had one year of experience, and both he and Dobbs are a bit inaccurate and Dobbs arm strength is fairly average.
Both Francois and Jackson have cannons, and Francois, for a redshirt freshman, was pretty accurate. Jackson has more to work on as a passer, but he does have a cannon, and his athletic ability speaks for itself.
I fully expect those 2 to be in the conversation as well.
I guess he will instantly be nicknamed "The Savior" by whichever QB-less team's fans get him???
No, they weren't.

about this draft class
No, they weren't.
No they weren't X2.
How many instances can anyone recall where they hyped up an NFL QB a year in advance only to see that QB fade away into obscurity or irrelevance? It rarely happens. Great collegiate QBs don't disappear very often. They usually stay great.
If they are saying next year's draft is loaded with QBs it likely will be even MORE loaded with QBs this time next year. Those guys won't just go away or start sucking.
To me this is a big development. I wouldn't ignore a QB that checks off the boxes if I am NYG but i'd sure as hell be aware of the 2018 draft when making a decision.
And just think, if we are picking late next year then Eli likely had a good to great 2017 season. If we are picking high...well...you get it. Either way, with all these QBs the Giants might be able to move up or even stand pat and get one.
