April 7 - Giants local prospects workout

Bramton1 : 3/29/2017 9:03 pm
So a teacher at my school has a son was a 4-year starting left tackle at Columbia University. He worked out at the Wagner College pro day last week, and he got an invitation to the Giants local prospects workout on April 7. Check out his senior year highlights below.

He locks onto his guy and sticks with him. Lots of pancake blocks. Seems athletic and has sold technique. I guess it will come down to level of competition.

Thanks for sharing.
Interesting.

Guys this big that can move do not grow on trees.

Just from seeing that quick I can point out some things. I love his bend. He isn't perfect at it and lunges sometimes to get off balance but you see it enough where he is able to redirect his moment pretty effortlessly because he sinks his hips. To compare him to Flowers, Flowers doesn't have natural bend which is one reason I think he really has some struggles. He doesn't trust his feet and bails out too quickly bringing his weight up higher which is why he is not able to deliver a proper blow to the defender.

Another thing that stands out was his vision. Considering he goes to Columbia I am assuming he is smart. He diagnoses plays very quickly and reacts just as quickly. He has his eyes up the whole time.

On that screen it was like he was shot out of a cannon. He kept his shoulders squre to the line of scrimmage and got out to his land mark. Impressive.

A negative that I see is that he doesn't seem to have a strong initial punch. Yes, he latches on to guys and drives them to the ground which is nice but Columbia is a huge step down from the NFL. You would hope an NFL level talent would be kicking some ass there. But his initial punch doesn't stifle the defender.

Overall, there is a lot to work with. He would be a great FA signing and possible practice squad player. Hell, look at Seattle with their LT who rarely played football and was a basketball player. Yes, he had his troubles but I think that is more just a lack of experience than anything else. He showed a lot of ability.

2nd team.
Very impressive, even against a much lower level of competition.

As robbie says, there seems to be a lot to work with there.

very very heavy feet and a narrow base, those are the two big eye poppingly bad things. He moves his feet well at times to compensate but he struggles below the knees a bit to move, looks a bit top heavy leg wise. Good leverage, certainly aggressive and looks strong.
If you can get a reserve tackle from the Canadian leagues,

that QB is horrible.

So only 1 guy tried to speed rush him to the outside shoulder. Most either bull rushed or tried to spin/crash inside. Makes me wonder if there is a reason we don't see those highlights.

Slow feet and almost no kick step at all. That being said, if he could be coached up to learn these things, the rest of his game is impressive and certainly worth a trip to camp.
So the father sent me his son's Pro Day film

The guy working him out individually was the Raiders' scout, who gave him a lot of compliments. He doesn't know most of his stats, except he benched 20 reps and had a 1.77 10-yard split (better than the vast majority of OL guys at the combine).

The Raiders' and Colts' scouts took his info, and he got invited to the Giants and Jets' local prospects workouts (although since they're only a day apart, he's saving himself for the Giants' workout).

And yes, he was 2nd team All-Ivy, although being one of the best players on an otherwise mediocre team (Columbia was 3-7 in 2016, 5-35 in his four years) may have contributed to him not getting first team.

I would love to see this guy get a chance with the Giants. Not withstanding the attraction of the father having to root for the Giants (they're Cowboys fans), this is a guy who has been dominant for much of the last four years, and has been impressive when going head to head against some of the best players on that level.
