Different mock & what you would've done (long)

allstarjim : 3/30/2017 1:09 am
I've noticed the CBS Big Board seems to be one of the most realistic for the simulator, so I've been using that one. The mock I just completed is one of my favorites, and I'll provide commentary... but below you will see the pick I mocked to the Giants, the BPA on the board (QBs and special teams players like kickers were never considered). Finally, you'll see some alternate players that were available that I passed on. This is one of my favorite mocks:

Rd 1 Drafted: Garrett Bolles, T, Utah // Big Board BPA: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: Ramczyk, Taco Charlton, David Njoku, Reddick, Malik McDowell

I think Bolles is the best tackle in this draft. I could go Charlton here, but I think I can wait for DL. I could've gone McDowell to fill a need, but Bolles I have the most confidence in becoming a franchise LT, and this is value and need for me coming together.

Rd 2 Drafted: Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina // Big Board BPA: Teez Tabor, CB, Florida // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: Dorian Johnson, Taylor Moton, Adoree' Jackson, Quincy Wilson, Cooper Kupp, ArDarius Stewart, Larry Ogunjobi, Dalvin Tomlinson, Jarrad Davis

I don't get excited about Zay Jones, but he was very productive and I respect that. He just looks like a football player, and I think he'll be a great complement to OBJ one day. Substance over style here. Dalvin Tomlinson was a big temptation here as well.

Rd 3 Drafted: Demarcus Walker, DE/DT, Florida State // Big Board BPA: ArDarius Stewart, WR, Alabama // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: Jake Butt, Marcus Williams, Juju Smith-Schuster, Joe Mixon, Jourdan Lewis, Rasul Douglas, Carlos Watkins

Not sure why Walker is being dropped on big boards and not touted more. He was ridiculously productive, played the biggest in the biggest moments of the game, and was at times, unblockable. He won games for FSU almost by himself. To get him here is a steal. He can play DE, and I think he can be a great pass-rushing 3-tech. Watch his Ole Miss game, it was great. Miami as well, guy is as much a playmaker from the DL position as you can find. I wish I hadn't had taken Zay Jones in the 2nd, because I also would love ArDarius Stewart here.

Rd 4 Drafted: D'Onta Foreman, RB Texas // Big Board BPA: Pat Elflein, C, Ohio State // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: Rayshawn Jenkins, Howard Wilson, Kenny Golladay, Jamaal Williams, Jeremy Sprinkle, Jarron Jones

No brainer here... the 4th is where I would love the Giants to target a RB, and if Foreman is sitting there, but he has to be the pick. Foreman is the big back complement to Perkins, but he's not a power back only. In fact, I think he has to learn to use more of his power. He is a shifty big man who will be very productive for the Giants.

Rd 5 Drafted: Damontae Kazee, CB, San Diego St // Big Board BPA: Dawuane Smoot, OLB, Illinois // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: Deatrick Wise Jr, Stacy Coley, Josh Reynolds, Shelton Gibson, John Johnson, Jadar Johnson, Deangelo Brown, Ben Gedeon, Shaq Griffin, Marquez White

I've talked about Kazee before, he's simply a bulldog. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. A smaller DB, I see him as the eventual nickel. When the ball is in the air, he wants to make a play on it. I love this guy's competitiveness.

Rd 6 Drafted: Aviante Collins, OG/OT, TCU // Big Board BPA: Aaron Jones, RB, UTEP // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: Joe Mathis, KD Cannon, Bug Howard, Michael Roberts, Keionta Davis, Jeremiah Ledbetter

I think Collins is one of the better OG short-term projects in this draft. He's an athletic linemen who the Giants may be interested in, and it would be great for the Giants to get two future starters for the OL out of this draft.

Rd 7 Drafted: Jeremy Clark, CB, Michigan // Big Board BPA: Javancy Jones, Edge, Jackson State // Who else the Giants could've drafted here: D.J. Jones, Tarik Cohen, Ashton Lampkin, Tashawn Bower, Joe Williams, Jehu Chesson, Freddie Stevenson, Jerry Ugokwe, Kareem Are, Johnathan Ford

Clark is coming back from an ACL otherwise he wouldn't be here. But he's a big corner, and perhaps can play free safety or corner back. The Giants have room for two CBs out of this draft.
Personally would go Watkins in the 3rd

But that is a great mock. Fills needs and the talent is there. Good job and always fun to read and nicely organized with bpa list. Good stuff
Foreman's not going to last till round 4

People said this same thing about Paul Perkins last year and we got him in the 5th. It's a strong RB class so guys could definitely go lower then where they're projected. He might not be there, but it could happen.

I don't think that word means what u think it means. :)
Rd 1
section125 : 3/30/2017 7:34 am : link
Bolles and Ramczyk would be the last guys I'd have taken there. Probably would have gone Njoku or Reddick. And then would have taken Moton in the 2nd.

Otherwise, the same.
If Zay Jones is there at 55, you have to draft him.
Ira : 3/30/2017 7:35 am : link
But he's highly unlikely to be there. I think he'll go in the first round. He may turn out to be the best receiver in this draft.

I concur.
I

would take Njoku, but Bolles is fine. Neither is a complete player, but both have a lot of "upside."

Don't think Jones will be available at #55.

Love Walker.

Great mock.

1. Njoku
2. Dorian Johnson
3. Rasul Douglass

I'll bet you a $1 Foreman doesn't go BEFORE round 4.
I like it except the Rd 2 - I would have grabbed Moton here
PatersonPlank : 3/30/2017 12:00 pm : link
Then we'd have Bolles and Moton to round out the OL. Love teh Rd 1, Rd 2, and Rd 4 picks. I will also take your $1 bet that Foreman goes before Rd 4 pick.
OK you're on!

However
allstarjim : 3/30/2017 12:39 pm : link
Can any of you articulate why you are so high on Moton?

He's a big, strong guy, I get that, but it seems to me he has agility issues, and I don't know how that translates to our team or how it would be an improvement either short or long-term.
BTW,
allstarjim : 3/30/2017 12:40 pm : link
The bet is before the 4th round... not before our pick in the 4th round. I was pretty specific.
Moton is a hugh, strong guy, with the skillset to play Guard in the
PatersonPlank : 3/30/2017 12:51 pm : link
NFL (even though he played a lot of tackle too). According to multiple reports, including the one below, he did well against top Big 10 competition. So as a Guard I like him.

I also think he is a good guy to work with for this year, knowing that we may not re-sign an offensive lineman or two in the next two years (since they are all coming do for new contracts). In Rd 2 I think he is a god fit for our future, not so much this year unless injury, and good value.

Still ok with me. He may be gone in Rd 2 after his pro day.
based on the hankins signing rumor I'd go
Torrag : 3/30/2017 1:09 pm : link
Reddick- 1st Round is about drafting impact players in Round 1 if possible, not filling needs. Plus we're still thin at LB.

Gerald Everett- High upside as a two way TE. Tough and athletic.

Roderick Johnson- highest upside LT in this draft imo. Will need some time and coaching to reach his potential.

Brian Hill- just like his all around game and traits.

Like your 5th and 6th rounders.

Njoku, Cupp, Butt
SHO'NUFF : 3/30/2017 2:51 pm : link
in the 1st 3
If the draft shakes out like that...
Old Dirty : 3/30/2017 3:15 pm : link
1st - Bolles
2nd - Jarrad Davis
3rd - Rasul Douglas
4th - Donta Foreman (I have a real hard time believing he'll be there)
Gonna hear the winers with this first rounder
BlackburnBalledOut : 3/30/2017 5:20 pm : link
RD 1 - Cam Robinson OT Alabama
Might be a slight reach or me may not even be there. Either way i see the other tackles ( Bolles, Ramcyzk, and even Lamp may be gone) I think Robinson is on the board. Hes a big mauler, great prospect and fills a need.

RD 2 - Gerald Everett TE South Alabama
We need a tight end who can attack the seems. I dont buy into the Njokou hype and Howard will be long gone. Aggressive blocker, with good hands and speed. (4.6)

RD 3 - Derek Rivers DE Youngstown State
All-time sack leader at Youngstown State and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Uses Speed and power to rush, good lateral movement, strong against the run, contains the edge well, 4.6 speed. Team Captain.

RD 4 - Jeremy McNichols RB Boise State
Powerfull runner, good vision, reliable receiver , highly experienced pass protector, can slipt out wide.

RD 5 - Damonte Kazee CB San Diego State
confident press cover corner, sure tackler who slips through blockers and will make plays in the open field, loves to punch the ball away from carriers

RD 6 - Robert Davis WR Georgia State
Physical receiver, 6'3'' , ran pro style system and routes, speed to break away, vision to catch ball over his shoulder, vertical threat

RD 7 - Chad Kelly QB Ole Miss
Taking a bit of a flier on a kid who is coming off an ACL, great arm strength, gunslinger, tight spiral, throw ball well before receiver makes his break, puts the ball up so receiver can make plays, experience throwing full route tree, confident in his throws, strong work ethic

Id rather not use a high pick on a qb. we're in win now mode, no need to cause a media stirred qb contoversey with pciking a qb high. kelly will most likely need a year to fully recover from his ACL injury. With Johnson/Smith set to battle for the backup role Kelly can be the 3, learning the system, the playbook, without having to worry about much else. Develop what could have easily been a day 1 qb.

Just for conversation's sake:

I won't argue with your first rounder in Cam Robinson. I think he's too much like the tackles we already have (that don't have left tackle feet). But certainly, I think he will be a good enough player to go in the first round and find a position and excel at it. I just don't believe in taking a 1st round OL (unless your picking around 30-32), unless it's a left tackle.

But your 2nd rounder, Gerald Everett, I think you can't take a small-school TE in the 2nd. I think he'll be available in the 3rd if you really believe in him. I think he's kind of a tweener and he has really small hands. I just think they'll be much better at 55.

Derek Rivers in the 3rd, isn't he kind of small to be a DE for the Giants?

I do like McNichols and Kazee, of course... GREAT 5th round pick!

Robert Davis I don't know much about, so thanks... I'll check him out.

But there's no way the Giants are going anywhere near Chad Kelly... toxic personality. That guy is a powder keg.

solid points all across..i get the hesitation for a 1st round OL since none look to be dominant LT, i still feel the line is in dire need of help. i dont believe in fluker, he sucked in SD we need more help at Tackle, more of a need pick.

Everett in RD2, hes projected to go late 2-early 3, bit of a reach but hes a guy who can block and receive. helps the line and the run game. i think he shows more on tape then njouku.

Rivers is not my typical DE choice, more of a 3-4 LB right now but he doesnt have to play right away, bulk him up a bit and let him compete in a kiwanuka like role.

Davis is a projected late rounder, i like his size since the giants only have one tall WR in marshall.

Kelly, yea i get that, i dont argue with it either but if you can get a talent that late, ill risk a 7th rd pick for him
