NFT: The tooth fairy protocol?

bigblue1124 : 3/30/2017 7:48 am
I am not a parent but remember when I was a child and the trusty old tooth fairy would come and leave that crisp dollar bill under my pillow for the loss of my tooth. One of our nephews who is six now lost his second tooth the other night his first tooth he found a crisp 20 dollar bill under his pillow this time a ten spot. My brother and sister in-law said the 20 was because it was his first tooth but now every other is 10 bucks.

What the heck happened to the standard buck for a tooth? When I was a kid and got that kind of money for a tooth I would be knocking them out left and right. I know we have a lot of parents on here so I was wondering what your protocol is for the tooth fairy? I am curious to see if this is standard or are they continuing to spoil him rotten which they do regularly.
The tooth fairy is a dentist and his rates rates follow accordingly.

When you were a kid, it cost a lot less to get a cavity filled. Remember?
We can't bust heads like we used to.

But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Each kid loses 20 baby teeth

plan accordingly cost-wise. These parents are in for 210 bucks at that rate. I'd argue that kids that age probably don't need 210 bucks but, hey, opinions vary.
Seems like a lot
rasbutant : 3/30/2017 9:12 am : link
but its your own kid. If you want them to have money, so they can learn to manage money. It doesn't matter the amount as long as its used as a teachable moment. Principle is the same. You have a dollar you can buy x or y. You have 10 dollars you can buy z or 10 x,y. You have $100 you can buy a whole lot of xyz or momma a new diamond ring.

Assuming they lose all their teeth before outgrowing it.

Outgrowing getting 10 bucks? As a Dad of teenagers, I can say that's pretty unlikely. :)
We give out kids dollars coins

They kind of view them as more of a "treasure" than a standard dollar bill.

fairy by about 8 or 9 years old at the latest.

I think we gave them 5 for the first tooth, maybe 10, and then 1 or 2 dollars for the others whatever I had at the time.

My youngest who is 8 has older siblings that were ruthless with that stuff and ruined most of it for her.

she was the kid who told all her 2nd grade classmates Santa wasn't real. My wife got some angry emails and texts over that one.

This. The Tooth Fairy even gave them a little plastic "treasure chest" so when our kids find their dollar coin in it, they still think it's finding treasure.

no chance I would give my kids 20 bucks a tooth, or even 10. our smallest bill is a 5 (we have coins for $1 and $2 loonies and toonies) so probably they will get that or if money is tight, something from the dollar store.

Talk about nostalgia

This got me thinking about what I did when I was a kid and how things have changed. I remember my dad sending me to the store for a pack of cigarettes for him he would give me I think .50 cents or something like that and the store only sold them out of a machine rather than over the counter. I would put the money in the machine and the pack would come out with the change taped to the pack I think it was like .15 cents taped to the box 35 cents for cigs now they are like 6 bucks.

And the be home when the street lights come on that was a must not home within 10 minutes my ass was grass and my dad was the lawn mower.
Well I just went to the inflation calculator
MetsAreBack : 3/30/2017 1:03 pm : link
$1 in 1980 is officially worth $3 today.

So $5 instead of $1 sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Depends

how nice are the teeth?
My two sons had really crooked teeth
therealmf : 3/30/2017 1:50 pm : link
and they both had baby teeth that weren't leaving on their own. A year or two before braces were going to be installed they both had 10 teeth pulled so the adult teeth could come in. They got MP3 players worth $50 from the tooth fairy even though they were past believing. This was 10-12 years ago. The elder had all 10 pulled in one visit. The younger did it in two visits 5 and 5. They also got a hell of a lot of ice cream the first week after.
Speaking of teeth...
RC02XX : 3/30/2017 2:04 pm : link
We've been asked by our daughter's dentist (same dentist for our son) if she could share pictures of my daughter's teeth with her colleagues since they are about as perfect a set of teeth she's seen in a 5 year old in her entire career. As for our son, we've already been warned that he'll need braces when he's old enough. Doh!

And we gave my daughter $5 for her first tooth and $1 for her second. She's only lost two so far, but we're giving her $1 for each.
