BBI Mock Draft – DISCUSSION Thread

Matt G : 4/2/2017 10:32 pm
We will use this as a discussion thread to keep the picks thread uncluttered. These threads will be used for the duration of the entire draft and will need to be bumped occasionally to push them back to page 1 of the forum.

Once a team is on the clock, they will have two hours to make a selection. If a team goes on the clock after 4pm, their two hour window will roll over to the next day. For example, if you go on the clock at 4:30pm, you will have until 9:30 am to make a selection. Picks may be made between 6pm and 9am if GMs are online and following the draft thread. The time limit only applies during the 9am to 6pm timeframe. If the two hour time limit expires, I will make a pick using any list that the GM for the team has sent me in advance (send lists to the email address in my profile) or in the absence of a list, I will use the GBN Big Board with a little discretion so as not make an obvious dumb pick (ie: Indianapolis Colts won’t be taking a QB in the 1st round this year). If a GM misses two consecutive picks without providing a prospect list or making some form of contact with me (email or posting on the draft thread) the spot will be reassigned to one of the BBIers who have expressed an interest to fill the vacancy.

Once again, I strongly encourage ALL GMs to utilize the BBI Mock Draft Spreadsheet . The spreadsheet contains the draft order (RD1-6) by team and GM with a fairly comprehensive list of both available and taken prospects based on the GBN Big Board (as well as several other prospects that did not make the GBN Big Board). I will try to keep the spreadsheet and thread updated as often as possible.

Ballsy choice, Terps. After four "safe" picks that check all the measurable boxes, I like the go-for-broke playmaker deep in Round Four. Cohen has big hands, which might offset his size deficiency somewhat.

Go Terps : 4/18/2017 11:27 am : link
I thought about waiting a little longer, but I didn't see the point in taking the risk.

Luck needs a checkdown option on 3rd down that can make someone miss. If Cohen can provide that alone I think he's worth the pick.

Outstanding speed and vertical jump will allow Myrick to compete for playing time possibly in the slot for Cowboys.had a very good completion rate of only 39%in Big 10 over last 2 years.

I love Jalen Myrick. I was shocked he made it to my 4th round pick. I was debating on taking Jalen and then hoping Hunter made it to my next pick. I am pretty sure he would have, but 40+ picks was to risky and I didn't want to lose Hunter who I have rated slightly higher. If I didn't take Cordrea Tankersley in the 2nd I would have probably taken the risk. I will say though I think Jalen would be an amazing slot CB so would have been a perfect fit with Tankersley, but still... Great pick and a steal this late!

take FS / NCB John Johnson from Boston College.

A guy who stood out at the senior bowl with his play. Really athletic free safety who can also play the nickel. Good ball skills. 6 foot 2 with a 37 vertical. Quality special teamer.

I like John Johnson as a true FS which this draft doesn't have a lot of. I think he is more quick and athletic than fast, but he has good coverage skills and I think he will play. Nice pick

We continue to try to rebuild our secondary. Some people dismiss Jackson because of his surrounding cast. That is dumb. After he rehabs the broken leg, he will contribute immediately on special teams as a dynamic returner and can fill in as FS or CB as needed.

This pick is largely brought to you by Dave Te. His review persuaded me that Joe Williams would be a good acquisition for the Pack. Teaming him with Ty Montgomery and Christine Michael will give Green Bay a formable backfield to complement the passing game. A more balanced attack will make the Packers just scary.

By the way, I did notice that my last two selections both came from Utah. I guess I have a thing for Mormons. Go figure.

God damnit, before I read those reports I thought I was for sure going to get Williams in Round 5. Especially after SY's not so glowing review. However, having watched this kid play. He's fast and runs so hard, I love him. Not much wiggle, but that's fine. We already have that in Duke.

Andy in Halifax : 4/18/2017 12:01 pm : link
Injury history, no question, and smaller at around 260. BUT, the kid has power hands, great speed off the edge and ability to bend. When watching film on Christian McCaffery against Washington, Matt Waldwin couldn't help but think "Holy shit, Joe Mathis"

I went for a high reward pick, figured this was a good time to go for it.

Link to Waldwin's glowing flimroom on Mathis is below.

If you look at just talent... Joe Williams is amazing! Very good size, speed, etc. While he did have some amazing OL blocking for him he also made them look much better. He is probably a 2nd rounder easy on talent, but this guy has so many red flags in his back he will drop. The quitting and then coming back doesn't bother me as much as it will bother the NFL people. He was having a tough time and really a rough life. However when his team needed him, it was loyalty that brought him back. That is the kind of teammates I want. Ones when you need them they show up. When he wasn't needed if he felt the injuries, the work, the pressure, the school work with athletics, etc were to much and he needed to step away. However he stepped up. My biggest red flag though with Williams is his fumbles. He had 7 fumbles in 334 touches. That is a problem with him and my biggest concern.
Amtoft and Lion
MadPlaid : 4/18/2017 12:28 pm : link
Thank you for the feedback. The fumbles concerned me, too. I'm hoping Joe can be coached out of it like Tiki was. I think he will have time to work on ball security before he is made the primary back.

Dave's write ups helped me choose Joe who wasn't my initial target. I looked hard at Kareem Hunt, so when I missed him, I had to find a good alternative. Dave found him for me. Thank you.

I dismiss him for now because he didn't run a 40. Can he play CB? I doubt he has the speed for that. Is he a good enough tackler for FS? Not sure there either, but as a nickel back I like him a lot. Come in on passing downs and cherry pick balls like he did at Alabama!

Joe Mathis is horrible. He is not a play maker at all. Go watch his sacks this year or better yet all his sacks... It won't take long.

2013 - no sacks
2014 - Oregon State... a legit sack. Bull rushed him man and then stepped inside
2014 - Washington State... no pocket to step up into and in fact had to back out right into Joe Mathis.
2015 - Boise State... again went around the outside and the middle was blocked so he couldn't go anywhere
2015 - Washington State... again goes the long way around and he can't get a pass off with the pocket pushing up the middle so he gets him with no where to go
2016 - Portland State... Rolls away coverage to good, Qualls forces him to run right into him.
2016 - AZ... He barely touches his foot which causes him to trip as he ran forward falling down when his feet tangled.
2016 - Stanford... snap was to early and the LT seriously did not move at all. As a matter of fact with his jukes he almost blocked himself all the time while the LT was a statue.
2016 - Stanford... He gets a legit sack around the edge the long way
2016 - AZ state... He gets a legit sack when the LT runs himself way deep to stop the outside rush and he simple cuts inside for an easy sack.

He is not impressive at all if you ask me. With the amazing CBs, amazing DL, amazing Safeties, etc he should have been able to put up way more sacks just from coverage sacks. Then take into count his injuries to both legs. I wouldn't even draft him.

I agree... This late to get a guy that can play a in nickel with good ball skills and also PR is great. I bet if he ran a 40 in anything under a 4.6 he gets drafted sooner than this. Not sure where he will go if he doesn't run though. To me he isn't running because he knows he will post a slow time. That makes me go... hmmm maybe I should pass. I really liked him though prior to the injury.
Let's finish out the fourth round!

I also wonder about system fit. Mathis appears best-suited to a rush OLB role in a 3-4, and he lacks the length that might induce the Giants to take a leap of faith this early. His measurables are hard to assess, because the rehab process derailed his Combine/Pro Day opportunities. I guess he wowed Andy in a private workout.
Thanks Amtoft

In the third round when I selected Kazee my other choice was Myrick. Both Kazee and Myrick had private workouts with the Cowboys this month. Cowboys have been drafting players recently that they bring in for workouts.

Even though they took an OT already, they definitely need more than one OL. Banner is top on the autopick list. My only concern is does he fit Sean McVay's scheme? Holden is next and may fit better. It is doubling up on OT, but Holden can play RT or kick inside while the other pick is more of a pure LT

If it comes down to an auto-pick for the Rams, Orlosky probably makes more sense than another OT. Aside from the earlier selection of Bisnowaty, keep in mind that they signed Whitworth. He's their LT this year, and probably in 2018 unless he hits the age wall. At center, the Rams have an immediate need.

We are late in the fourth and really positions shouldn't matter. At this point you are not looking for starters and a developmental OT to replace 35 year old Whitworth isn't a reason to bypass IMO. I agree with your point though and Tyler Orlosky would be a better fit from a chance to start perspective, but this late a backup LT is not out of the question.

I considered him with my last pick but thought I needed some Defense before continuing my assault on the offensive needs. A slot receiver with the ability to separate is exactly what a Rookie QB needs to help him when he is under duress.

I like his teammate more, but Smoot is a good pick at this point. The scheme Illinois ran this year did not play to Smoot's strengths, but there is potential with that pick. If you are going to be out for awhile (I think you said you were leaving at 4) you may want to send a board to Matt as there are 2 picks before you pick again

You could just look at the draft sheet that has them listed as well, they get wiped out there when they are gone.
