BBI Mock Draft – DISCUSSION Thread

Matt G : 4/2/2017 10:32 pm
We will use this as a discussion thread to keep the picks thread uncluttered. These threads will be used for the duration of the entire draft and will need to be bumped occasionally to push them back to page 1 of the forum.

Once a team is on the clock, they will have two hours to make a selection. If a team goes on the clock after 4pm, their two hour window will roll over to the next day. For example, if you go on the clock at 4:30pm, you will have until 9:30 am to make a selection. Picks may be made between 6pm and 9am if GMs are online and following the draft thread. The time limit only applies during the 9am to 6pm timeframe. If the two hour time limit expires, I will make a pick using any list that the GM for the team has sent me in advance (send lists to the email address in my profile) or in the absence of a list, I will use the GBN Big Board with a little discretion so as not make an obvious dumb pick (ie: Indianapolis Colts won’t be taking a QB in the 1st round this year). If a GM misses two consecutive picks without providing a prospect list or making some form of contact with me (email or posting on the draft thread) the spot will be reassigned to one of the BBIers who have expressed an interest to fill the vacancy.

Once again, I strongly encourage ALL GMs to utilize the BBI Mock Draft Spreadsheet . The spreadsheet contains the draft order (RD1-6) by team and GM with a fairly comprehensive list of both available and taken prospects based on the GBN Big Board (as well as several other prospects that did not make the GBN Big Board). I will try to keep the spreadsheet and thread updated as often as possible.

correct there are several really good edge rushers left, but wanted a guy with a little more size, which Basham has with room to grow.

Jay on the Island / Tampa on the clock

If I hadn't already taken Garrett #1, this guy was very high on my list.

Kind of stunned and excited to get Brantley there. Checks off the biggest priority for the Vikings in the draft. To not have a first rounder, and get Brantley in the fold, feels like a big win.
Sent my 7 player board in just in case

my pick comes up in tomorrow morning or I am delayed when I am on the clock.
I went with Engram
Jay on the Island : 4/10/2017 1:18 pm : link
I passed on Njoku in round 1 in hopes of Engram falling to my 2nd round pick and luckily this was the case. Cameron Brate was a pleasant surprise but he isn't a #1 TE and now the Bucs have another weapon for Winston. Having a pass catching TE is a very valuable safety net for a young QB.

Good value with Engram, but I neither he nor Brate offer much as a blocker. That being said, there definitely is a plateau in terms of talent at this point in the draft and Engram does offer one of the greater upsides of the players left.
Really like all the players in my top 5...
Amtoft : 4/10/2017 2:54 pm : link
Been trying to figure out who I want more. I have my #1 locked up on top. 2, 3, 4, and 5 though blur on who I want more.

I had Alvin Kamara 7th on my list. I know some people really love him, but there is something about him that I keep pushing him down for some reason. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of him. Probably a mistake on my part and he will be a beast! Engram I have seen go quiet to much in games despite amazing abilities, but had him 9th on my list. Just isn't the blocker I would like unless I was running a 2 TE offense. If I was running a 2 TE offense he would have been much higher for me.

Yeah, for Cleveland Kamara doesn't make a lot of sense, with Duke Johnson on the squad. A lot of players I like but some positions of much much higher need right now.

True, but they just spent stupid money on Zeitler and Tretter. I am not going to take Pocic in the 2nd round.

There are probably 3 or 4 players I would be between if I were the Cleveland Browns at this point, but also having pick 65 I think there is 1 or 2 that would likely jump to the head of my list
With so many picks
Lionhart28 : 4/10/2017 3:12 pm : link
and so few playmakers, the Browns swing for the fences with Adoree' Jackson. He has some work to do as a CB, but may be the best athlete in the draft. Immediate difference maker on special teams and a lot of potential, despite his size as a defensive back. He's also the type of athlete that I design 5 or so touches on offense every week just to get the ball in his hands.
And as I posted that
Mike in NY : 4/10/2017 3:13 pm : link
Lionhart takes probably the player that I would mostly have taken had I been the Browns. I really think Cleveland is killing it so far in the Mock Draft.

Thanks Mike! There are a few players I like better as CBs right now, but this kid is just so dynamic. If you're a team like the Browns, you need to add these kinds of guys. If nothing else, he's a Devin Hester-type talent as a returner. That alone is worthy of a 2nd round pick.

My only issue with Jackson, who I have seen a lot, is I think I like him more as a nickel back. Not that he can't play outside, but just that he would excel there. There seem to be a lot of these types of players... Peppers, Jackson, Curtis Samuel, etc. Players that have a ton of talent, but their position is not locked in or confined.

Amtoft, I agree with you. But Cleveland actually needs a slot corner anyway. So to add a dynamic returner too? I'm down.

I think in this day and age every team needs a stud slot CB. It is why Jackson to most teams makes a ton of sense and a great pick. That is his floor while which is a pretty great floor. I can't knock the pick at all. Just was stating the only thing holding me back from having him higher. He has very good cover skills to go with elite athleticism.

Walker is the player I just moved up to my #2. I am actually a big fan of his. I like that he can be a very good DE and move him inside as well especially on passing downs. When you look at DEs in the this draft I am just not a fan of most of them. I bumped Walker up because I thought he would be the last DE that I wanted for probably a round or two unless someone drops. The value was close enough on my 2-5 that taking Walker now would have made more sense for my team. Nice pick.
Nothing better for a young QB than a nice 3 down running back
jlukes : 4/10/2017 4:39 pm : link
Alvin Kamara may be the best running back in the draft and the Broncos can use a RB that can stay on the field all 3 downs, run between the tackles, and catch balls out of the backfield.

The pick was between Kamara and Engram, and with Engram going off the board right before us, it was a no brainer to take Kamara
Some intriguing options on the horizon for NYG at #55.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/10/2017 4:47 pm : link
Pending Miami's pick:
WR/RB Curtis Samuel (small, but dynamic)
DE Carl Lawson (has everything except length)
OLB Tyus Bowser
CBs Cordrea Tankersley and Fabian Moreau
ILB Raekwon McMillan (too similar to Goodson?)
OT Taylor Moton
WRs Chris Godwin, Cooper Kupp, Zay Jones
QB Davis Webb (I wouldn't, but Andy might...)
Godwin please

I double dipped on the OL for the Fish.
Optimus-NY : 4/10/2017 7:05 pm : link
A la rounds 1 and 2 of the 1988 Draft for the Giants, when they selected Eric Moore and Jumbo Elliot in rounds 1 and 2 respectively, I decided to fix a GLARING issue for the Fish. They were fine at Tackle and Center. I upgraded at Guard BIG TIME with not one, but 2 OGs. Lamp (who is versatile as they come) and Johnson will start inside for a loooong time in the pros. The Fish's OL goes to Dallas' level, maybe even superseding it. Bottom line: a weakness now goes to a huge strength.
Good thing I took Feeney when I did

For me, there are 3 players I likely would be going between if I were the Giants and I could see the merits of any of the 3. At the end of the day it is Andy's call.
Had every intention of taking Dorion Johnson and assumed he'd be there
Andy in Halifax : 4/11/2017 7:06 am : link
Pick will be up in a sec or two.
Had Dorion Johnson, Juju Smith-Schuster, a CB and another WR
Andy in Halifax : 4/11/2017 7:18 am : link
and ultimately went with the kid I think is BPA. Not a perfect match with need but BPA is BPA.
Smith-Schuster is both a good pick and a questionable one.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/11/2017 7:39 am : link
There seem to a lot of possession-type receivers in this class with size and not much speed. With Marshall signed and Njoku as the first pick, there isn't an urgent need, and I'm not sure Smith-Schuster stands out enough to be good value for the Giants at #55. In a vacuum, he's a fine pick. But when the Giants' turn comes in Round Three, Andy might wish he had used #55 to address an area where the class is thinner: DE, OL, LB, etc.
Well

I had three players targeted before the Giants picked. Oakland took the guy I really wanted in Tankersley so that left OL and DL choices. I went with the option that protects my new first round investment.

I may be wrong (likely), but I saw a really big drop off
Andy in Halifax : 4/11/2017 8:54 am : link
from my WR & the other guy I liked (Penn St) to the next group of WRs. I actually had him in the middle of my second tier overall (around 40ish) so value, for me, was there.

Moton didn't impress me in my scouting trip to Draft Breakdown...

From what I have seen/read Moton projects better as a guard in the NFL then a Tackle. He would most likely start his rookie year as a Tackle for the Texans then transition to Guard in later years (starters are getting older and slower)
Seattle's pick is in
sjnyfan : 4/11/2017 9:45 am : link
Despite being the FBS all time leader in receptions, a strong Senior Bowl week and the combine, I still think Zay Jones is underrated. He has smallish hands (9") but he catches everything. He had only 6 drops this year but led the nation in targets, receptions and was second in yards per game. ECU used him with a lot of short throws, which I think would compliment the smaller, faster WR's who always go deep for Seattle. But Jones has speed as well and showed his ability to go deep atthe Senior Bowl. He has also been in used creatively which would translate to the 'Hawks offensive gameplan. Lastly he has the pedigree. His father was a first rd pick of the Cowboys and played ten years in the league.
Matt
YAJ2112 : 4/11/2017 9:46 am : link
you have a couple of picks that are wrong in your last couple of posts on the selection thread.
Kansas the City
English Alaister : 4/11/2017 10:03 am : link
looks to Kansas the State and takes Jordan Willis.

A talented edge defender we see Willis as their heir to Justin Houston. Crazy SPARQ data second only to Garrett. A 1.53 10 yd split, a 4.5 40 (in Indy), 125 inch broad jump and a 39 vertical plus a 6.8 3 cone. That is top 10 percentile stuff.

All following on from a career at Kansas State where he notched 25.5 sacks and 39.5 TfL. There's some work to be done, for all those numbers Willis still plays a bit stiff at times and needs to work on his moves but there's a lot here to work with.

You have to be able to get to the QB in today's NFL and Willis helps us get that done.
