When Eli retires... trade OBJ if we draft a rookie?

DennyInDenville : 4/12/2017 8:46 pm
Seems like obj's financial control 1 more year , plus option year 2 plus franchise year 3, co align with Elis contract

Would it be wise to trade obj if we draft a fresh rookie so obj wouldn't be in his head? Think about it

Obj on a franchise tag at age 27 can get us a couple firsts to build around our new Eli

We get a once-in-a-generation talent at wide receiver and now you want to trade him?

In the NFL, where trades almost never happen?

I don't get this talk at all.
What better way to continue the franchise
UConn4523 : 4/12/2017 8:58 pm : link
than to take weapons away from a new QB. Makes sense.

Denny, this is a doozie of a thought. Keep 'em coming. We need a good chuckle.
Hmm maybe not The best idea?

Idk I just have a bad feeling about Obj long term

Just a gut feeling..

Seeing guys like Plax, Nicks, Cruz, Smith, even Manningham and Hixon all just turn into living fossils while playing after injury minus Plax..

Obj is a phenomenal talent though

But if this team is rebuilding hardcore in 3-4 years and the LA Rams call and offer a bundle of 1st, 2nd, and 4th rounders you would have to think about it before giving Odell 5/6 years 60/70 million guaranteed money..
Btw I love Odell
DennyInDenville : 4/12/2017 9:08 pm : link
Huge fan of his.

Besides Nicks he's my favorite Giants WR in my lifetime

I rank them

1.) OBJ
2.) Nicks
3.) Plax
4.) Toomer
5.) Cruz
However that said..
DennyInDenville : 4/12/2017 9:10 pm : link
If we trade Odell, the draft picks bust (not likely) and if Odell has superb success for another 4+!years after the trade then maybe it would be a poor football decision.

Idk my bad.
If you get a Herschel Walker type deal

Eli with someone who is ready to play and can win if the supporting cast is strong. The Seahawks won in Russell Wilson's 2nd year. The Cowboys went 13-3 last year with a rookie. And those guys were 3rd and 4th round picks not ballyhooed "once in a generation" type guys. Going back a few years the Steelers went 15-1 in Ben's first year and won it all his second.

If Cleveland offers this years whole draft
est1986 : 4/12/2017 9:34 pm : link
And next years... You maybe think about it for two seconds, then say hell no. Odell does just as well for this franchise off the field as he does on it, amazing as he is with the football. He's the face of the NFL.

Everybody remembers how the Herschel Walker deal made the Cowboys of the 90s. Nobody remembers how little the Eric Dickerson deal did for the Rams.
Quote:
: Indianapolis traded the rights to rookie linebacker Cornelius Bennett, a No. 1 draft choice out of Alabama whom it had not been able to sign, to Buffalo for running back Greg Bell and the Bills' first-round draft picks in 1988 and '89 and their second-round pick in '89. The Colts then sent all they'd received from Buffalo, along with their own first-round draft pick in '88, their second-round choices in '88 and '89 and running back Owen Gill, to the Los Angeles Rams, who in turn packed Dickerson off to Indianapolis. ...

So the Rams got three firsts (two from Buffalo, one from Indy), three seconds (one from Buffalo, two from Indy) and two running backs, and the trade was still a fizzle for both sides. Dickerson was almost done, and the Rams did nothing special with those picks.

The point being: Why would you ever, ever trade a star of Beckham's caliber, when he's still young, for draft picks? I'm always shocked at how many people on BBI don't realize what a crapshoot the draft is. It is incredibly rare to hit on a pick the way the Giants did with OBJ. There are a lot more William Josephs and Kenny Phillips picked in the first round than OBJs.
Remember When: A 10-player trade sends Eric Dickerson to Colts - ( New Window )
Obj on franchise tag can yield a couple firsts?
Tuckrule : 4/12/2017 10:29 pm : link
Yea if someone trades for him. In the history of franchise tags I don't believe any have been traded. It doesn't make sense.
No.
Torn Tendon : 4/12/2017 10:56 pm : link
If they don't have a young guy with potential on the roster when Eli retires, I'd rather they go with a journeyman vet, have a sucky record and draft a QB early.
I thought a thought
Glover : 4/12/2017 11:07 pm : link
like this would come about after that Sign OBJ now? thread. The goal is to draft and keep the best players. Steelers aint gonna trade AB, Giants aint gonna trade OBJ. The goal is to get great players, not trade them away for draft picks. They scored big time when they drafted Beckham, they could have just has easily drafted a Flowers, as they could if they trade Beckham away for draft picks.
Keeping OBJ
AnnapolisMike : 4/12/2017 11:11 pm : link
Is dependent on many factors. Eli retiring is not one of them.

OBJ could be out of football in three years or in the middle of the greatest career a wide receiver has ever had. The Giants keeping him will not hinge on Eli.
Your logic seems confused
mack809f : 4/12/2017 11:41 pm : link
We don't want to replace our good players. Just the bad ones, like the OL.
Sure

For Ezekiel Elliott, Dez Bryant and Tyronne Smith straight up. Actually lets do it now.

count me in on trading him Denny.

He's a bad seed...
just to humor the argument
UConn4523 : 4/13/2017 9:44 am : link
when you guys so casually say "trade him", what are you expecting in return? And what team will be willing to part with a package of picks/players you are hoping to get?
So in other words completely sink into a multi-year rebuild?
PatersonPlank : 4/13/2017 12:16 pm : link
We'll still have a D, good WR's, hopefully a decent OL, and a running game. Why not keep everyone and try to find a QB who can play? Either draft him a year or two before Eli retires, or find an experienced vet (like AZ did with Palmer for example). Why just knock the whole thing to the ground?

True, the Cowboys went 13-3 with a rookie QB, but behind their O-line, my grandmother could have taken that team to a 13-3 record. Dak may turn out to be a great NFL QB, but let’s see how well he plays when put into situations where he has to make things happen using his abilities and football acumen.
