NFT: Lawn Weed Removal

mvftw : 4/13/2017 2:13 pm
Need to remove a lot of lawn weeds by hand (don't want to use chemicals because of pets). Need to remove as much of the roots as possible. Does the Garden Weasel or stand up types like that actually work?
can't speak to the tools
UConn4523 : 4/13/2017 2:20 pm : link
but do it on a day that rained heavy or soak your lawn heavily before doing so.
you see the reason for chemicals

the week after you pull out all the weeds down to the roots and most of them are back again

i hate using the chemicals so i still do it but it's a neverending job
Why don't you just use
pjcas18 : 4/13/2017 2:42 pm : link
a pet safe organic weed killer?

They work, just you need to apply them much more frequently.

The weed that I have needs the lawn & weed killer. Like Roundup. A weed killer will not work...

How big is your yard? I think manual weed removal on a decent sized yard is a fools errand.

maybe plant clover, some people think of it as a nice looking weed and it chokes out everything else in your lawn.

Smoke it!

Does anyone know if its safe to use Scott's
GuzzaBlue : 4/13/2017 3:43 pm : link
weed and feed if you have a dog that runs around in the grass. He never really eats it, sometimes maybe. I'm talking about a week after applying he would be on the grass. Keep him off until then.

I won't say say there's no risk, but it should be minimal. Make sure there's a good rain or that you water the lawn well before you let him back on it.
Pelletized Lime question

Any specific brand/product I should be looking for (or avoiding)?
get the hound dog weed puller
GentleGiant : 4/14/2017 9:07 am : link
do a little bit every day, pulls up the whole root fill in the divot with compost and grass seed. I naturally unweeded my lawn over a month with very little effort. The key is not trying to do it all in one day.

I've found the same thing; especially with crabgrass. To get the root I was leaving behind a 4 inch diameter section of dirt which made it much easier for another weed to grow there than grass.

Have you researched any of the natural lawn care products; a neighbor has pets and uses Natural Lawn Care of America. Their name sounds good but who knows what they really use.
well you could spray roundup
gmenatlarge : 4/14/2017 10:40 am : link
with glysophate (a known carcinogen) like the idiot in the commercials with shorts on!
Boiling Water
Jim in Fairfax : 4/14/2017 10:49 am : link
Never tried it, but pouring boiling water will apparently kill weeds. Obviously grass too, so you'd have to want everything dead within a range.

Another way to kill a large swath: cover it with black plastic. They sell thick rolls with anchors. Bricks are good idea to anchor also. Wet the area well before applying. Leave it for several weeks.
If you want to get rid of weeds in the lawn, you can't
buford : 4/14/2017 12:31 pm : link
use RoundUp. RU is a non-selective herbicide and will kill anything and everything. You probably need a broadleaf week killer that will kill broadleaf weeds and not grass.

I have an organic lawn care company. They use an organic weed killer on the lawn weeds. I am not sure exactly what it is, but make sure you get a selective herbicide, not round up.

You can use one of those weed poppers, I use it in my flower beds. They are effective, but you will have to repeat.
Just googled and found this
buford : 4/14/2017 12:35 pm : link
it's an non-chemical spray that overdoses the weeds with iron (apparently they don't like it) and the grass actually likes it. So it kills two birds with one stone.
