The Conforto situation sucks. I don't envy Collins. There's really no easy solution here.
Sure there is.
C'mon, this is not an easy situation to handle.
If you're going to suggest benching Granderson long-term, I don't really consider that a legitimate option. Managers don't pull the plug on vets like Granderson 2 weeks into a season- and it's not like Granderson has been perennially bad here, either.
Sitting Bruce while he's raking doesn't make sense, either.
Now we have Lagares activated to conflate the situation further.

I'll respond in more detail in a bit but I agree and disagree with what you are saying.
For the record, I think Conforto offers more than Granderson does right now and I would like to see him play.
The thing is - managers and players, especially veteran players like Curtis who play the game the right way and are important clubhouse guys, have a certain relationship/loyalty. It's what creates respect and makes the player have the managers back.
Curtis has been here for 3+ years now, he's obviously one of the most respected guy on the team and he is still a solid ballplayer.
If this were MLB The Show, I'd just yank him and play MC more often, but I don't expect Terry to do that. He's going to continue to get Curtis in the lineup most games under the assumption that he's going to get it going at some point.
The trade route is another discussion - I think some people may say "hey, now that Bruce is hot, let's flip him," but, you're not going to fool most MLB GM's. They know what they're getting if they trade for Jay Bruce and they also know that we're trying to create a spot or MC, which would probably reduce our leverage in any type of trade discussion.
To me, it's a very difficult situation right now. I think everyone - fans, and people in the org - want to see MC play and get AB's here. But telling a guy like Granderson to take a seat for the long-haul is way easier said than done.
is wasting years of cheap service time. When does he get to play so we can learn what he is? In his walk year? So he can maybe have one good year which wouldn't be enough to justify making the effort to keep him?

I understand this, but how to do you get him regular AB's?
I just don't agree with playing Vets just because they are vets. Granderson is serviceable, but he is clearly declining. He rarely shows up offensively until mid-may or later. He's not a great fielder and looks worse this year. Honestly, at this point in his career he should be a platoon player. Maybe borderline starter.
Conforto is a highly touted draft pick that has destroyed every level of the minors and has shown the ability to shine in the pros. And that's with TC dicking around with him.
I understand it's not an ideal situation but it also doesn't need to be this difficult. Problem is, TC is stubborn when it comes to "his" guys. Granderson can go 0 for April and May but he'll still be in the lineup everyday to play through it. Even if it's a detriment.
Conforto destroys April and then starts to slump. His playing time is immediated affected, no longer is allowed to hit against lefties, and then shipped back to the minors. Wilmer was treated the same way, probably worse.
They don't have to bench Granderson but Conforto definitely should get more playing time at Granderson's expense. TCs whole mantra of "you hit, you play" is bullshit. The fact that Conforto isn't in the lineup today because of Granderson is predictable and unfortunate. If Granderson is such a great clubhouse guy, then he should be with less playing time also.
I get it.. I just think this early in the season, it's hard to expect Collins to bench one of his vets that he's been leaning on the last few years. It's not like Granderson has been abysmal or anything, either. He's had a couple really nice years here. Sometimes as a manager, you want players to know you have their backs - it takes some pressure off and doesn't make them feel like if they don't hit a HR every time up, they're going to get benched.
We'll see how it plays out. I want MC to play just like everyone else does. I also think that Collins is in a tough situation and is trying to do right by his players. Regardless of what we think about him as a manager, the players on this team play hard for him and a lot of that is because they respect him. So, it's a slippery slope.
And just like that, Curtis comes through and drives in the tying run....
is I have no idea if Conforto can play CF yet. He hasn't really been tested and he has about 3-4 starts in his entire career/minors and college too! I know Granderson is below average-ish but at least he has a career of reading routes, ect. out there.
If I knew Conforto could legitimately handle it Id probably be more on board but he looks like our future RF to me.

I agree - this is the other issue. Curtis is no great shakes out in the field but he has tons of MLB experience playing CF. Conforto does not.
He does have a ton of experience and has earned the right to play. And I want it to come across like I hate the guy. I love Curtis and he has produced more here than I thought he would. Anyway, it is what it is.
He wasn't that bad. Little bit of a rocky 1st obviously fueled by two walks. He settled down and was cruising until the last inning where he didnt get any favors from a Walker muff, ect. Seemed like he ran out of gas there too. Edgin just threw gasonline all over the fire.
Why did pea brain take him out to use Robles for a 4th night in a row? especially considering how bad he was on the third night
He looked gassed in that 3rd inning. Velocity was still good, but his pitches were not as crisp and he was not locating as well. I hate seeing Robles in there, but Smoker was running on fumes.
He doesn't walk Gordon and set up the DP with one of the slowest men in baseball coming up. Totally dumb move. But it works. Mets are destined to win this game.

Not dumb when you consider that if you do not get the DP you have Yelich up with runner in scoring position
With Yelich, Stanton, Bour, and if anyone gets on, Ozuna due up in the bottom half of this inning, I just don't see this run holding up, but hope I'm wrong.

open long enough but always nice to wake up to see they punched one across and made it hold up. Happy for TdA, just hope this is the year he can stay healthy.
is how hesitant Collins is to get younger players involved. I get it with Granderson and the outfield situation. These are proven good players who are all coming off good years.
What I dont get is why Collins is so hesitant to use somebody like Smoker or Sewald more when guys like Montero and Edgin have been mediocre options for years now. Why not "try" the options that have dominated AAA? It was as clear as day Smoker was Collins's last resort last night. Edgin almost cost us the game and Montero is "meh" at best. Smoker truly showed what he was capable of last night. It's a shame Sewald only got to pitch for one whopping inning while he was up.
Get Edgin and Montero out of here. We'll never improve if we are going to keep sticking with these mediocre players.
If you aren't going to play him at all send him back to Vegas. Get a versatile defensive option that can come in a game late.
Rivera's defensive short comings are a real issue. I think this is the real reason he has never been given a "shot". He's just not an MLB caliber defensive player and the "bat only" bench players are few and far between. I'd give raging hot Cecchini a shot. I'm not "giving up" on Rivera but his defense is an issue.

Yeah. Especially at 3B. I think if he's ever going to be even average there it's going to take some time. I like him better at 2B or 1B though. Either way, if he's not going to play anyway get a defensive guy like Reynolds up who can come in and help you out defensively late in a game. TJ Rivera's 4 atbats in two weeks isnt helping anybody. Just my take.

Agreed Z. TC tends to focus too much on the batter to batter matchups. I would love to see him give Smoker a chance to pitch a full inning or two. If not, we are going to have a few guys approaching Pedro Feliciano territory as far as appearances are concerned.
to you guys who stayed up to the end. Wife was gone last night so I watched the game from the start but went to bed in the 12th.
I didn't think Gsellmen looked TOO bad. Obviously not a great outing, but he had some Marlins batters confused and the strike zone was really odd. Defense didn't help him either. I'm confident he's going to put up a better outing next time.
Glad to see TDA hitting like this. It was one of the biggest question marks of the season. If he is healthy and "good" it's worth at least a few wins.
Rivera didn't look great on defense last night. I think 2B is his best position. I wouldn't bury him over one bad game, but yea, his defense isn't good.
Wilmer had a few good ABs vs righties but just couldn't get it done vs them.
and sustain it without needing massive changes at the deadline. Smoker and Salas are doing impressive work with Familia out. I know it's probably going to take time (probably next year) but I look forward to the not so distant future when Conforto, Rosario, and Cecchini get the chance to play every day.

I wouldn't say the strike zone was odd per se looking at the Brooks Baseball tracker. Angel Hernandez actually had a fairly consistent zone. The problem was he was not giving the low strike to anyone that Gsellman really needs with his stuff. I also wish he would go after hitters more when he is not getting that low strike to induce weak contact. His balls have enough downward movement that if he pounded players inside he would get more hitters getting over the ball and hitting into groundouts.
I was ready to go to sleep but couldn't shut it off until it ended.
Awesome TEAM win. Every single player put in some work last night.
For TdA to hit that HR after 15 innings behind the plate was also super impressive. I said in ST that I really thought this could finally be the year we saw the "real" TdA if he could just stay healthy. So far, so good. This is the guy we've been talking about all these years.
Gotta give Robles some credit - as up and down as he is, that was a fucking gutty performance on his 4th straight day of pitching. The guy came through big time for us.
Last night was also the best I've ever seen Smoker pitch. I hope he's turning a corner. If he can keep that going, he's going to be a nice piece for us.
Need Thor to go at least 7 tonight.
update on marlins man and his guests sitting behind home plate Â
I guess I thought he was getting squeezed but if the data says otherwise then that's that. Luckily he's working with a great pitching coach so hopefully he can make adjustments. The stuff still looked really good to me.

7 innings for Thor? How about a CG SHO!
I am attaching the graph on the link below. Triangle means a pitch thrown by a Mets pitcher and Square means one thrown by a Marlin. Red are strikes and Green are balls. Especially against LHB's, pitchers were not getting low strike LINK - ( New Window )
everything comes together. I don't even mean necessarily a WS championship (anything can happen in the postseason) but from a standpoint that the vision Sandy likely had when he came here, the top guys we've been waiting on, are all not only here, but have gotten the bumps and bruises out of the way. The deer in the headlights looks are gone. Everyone feels like they belong. I really feel if this team stays relatively healthy this engine is going to start purring.
I think Gsellman does not match up well with their htters, I expect more from him, and Wheeler looks good, just had a few bad innings. I expect those two to pitch much better. They both have excellent stuff
is on tonight (he usually is), it should relax the team today. I would play a lot of subs today because of last night's long game ie conforto, lagares, rene etc.
He's trying to belong in this group of star studded players... he's happy to be home and wants to impress the fans/teammates. It's not that shocking to me that he has had a slow week-10 days. Reyes used to drive everyone crazy with his cold streaks for years popping everything up, ect.... This isn't new.
The bigger problem with Reyes, for me, is that he was never as great of a hitter as people think he was. During our playoff competing years 2006-2008 and even up through 2010 he was basically a slightly above league average bat. Of course his defense and speed shot his WAR up and he was extremely valuable but he no longer is as fast and no longer provides fantastic D. Jose Reyes is a career wRC+ 104 player. That's ok for the 8 hole if he plays up to his ability. He really should be 8th though and not counted on to be some sort of dynamic player anymore.
Yeah. Especially at 3B. I think if he's ever going to be even average there it's going to take some time. I like him better at 2B or 1B though. Yeah, why not put Rivera at 1B and Wilmer at 3B? I know they want to give Wilmer reps at first, but he's at least a capable 3B. Rivera is a major liability there. It's too bad, the kid can hit.
(Unless I missed it above). I ask because that will largely determine who from the bench starts if you are concerned about vets being tired. Frankly, I think the late game may have actually helped out the vets as the vets are more likely to have been enjoying the nightlife so they may have actually gotten more sleep playing late.

It's early but TDA very well could be the best hitting catcher in baseball by years end. He has that kind of potential. He already showed "Posey like" offense in 2015 and he was just getting started. STAY HEALTHY PLEASE!

Im so happy TDA listened to him and got rid of the extreme wrap. Some pretty cool stories going around about how Long made him do exercises even in his house by looking in the mirror, ect. to stay balanced. Now get him the hell out of the 8 hole. he deserves some pitches to hit. Extreme hypothetical but let's say the wRC+ 130s from 2015 TDA is back....
here against righties to even get better if he wanted to. Still, even with everything together I think he's a wRC+105-110 guy. He should be playing on a team like the Padres. He would likely thrive.
curious what they do in CF next season. Lorenzo Cain is an obvious target for CF but he's 32 opening day next season so buyer beware. Conceivably if Nimmo and Lagares have good seasons I guess they could go with a CF platoon but both are SO injury prone that could be a disaster. FA market is pretty much void.
probably do have an eye on a Lagares/Nimmo platoon contingent upon healthy/somewhat productive seasons this year.
I also like the idea of moving Cabrera over to third next season to make way for Rosario and keeping Wilmer as utility IF off the bench.
TDA
Smith
Rivera/Cecchini
Rosario
Cabrera
Cespedes
Nimmo/Lagares
Conforto
Bench:
Flores
Rivera/Cecchini
Nimmo/Lagares
I'm really not in favor of doing this. I'm nuts about minor leaguers but I suspect the 2018 Mets would be far WORSE than the 2017 team relying on Lagares and Nimmo + Smith + Rosario. Rosario will be the Mets SS next season however..
I wouldn't pencil in Smith just yet. There is a very legitimate chance he would represent a significant downgrade from Lucas Duda in 2018. MOST rookies struggle, now we are going to replace a few of guys like Walker, Duda, Cabrera with unproven rookies? Rosario is 1) A pretty special talent 2) Plays a position with less pressure on the bat but subtracting multiple proven MLB players for multiple unproven young guys seems like a bad bet. Maybe Smith has an incredible season and makes this moot but I think people are rushing to fit these guys in when this SHOULD be a 3-4 year run of being a contender (at minimum).
As for Nimmo/Lagares 1. Both are beyond injury prone 2. Lets see Nimmo actually hit MLB pitching before assigning ANY role for him for next year.
Any of those guys could surprise and take a starting role next year but I doubt Sandy would go "all young". The way he's operated the last couple seasons with placeholders and depth tells me he'll want to bring a few more options into play.
If Conforto and TDA really established themselves as dependable "stars" this year though, I might change my mind a little bit. But right now the only guy we can depend on going into 2018 is Ces.
It's probably heavy on young and inexperienced, but I do like Cabrera at 3rd.
I suspect Cabrera at 3b is a very real possibility for next season. I really don't understand why the Mets talk up playing guys at other positions for it to not even happen. Reyes in the OF, TDA/Plawecki at 1b, Rivera in the OF etc. I would have given Cabrera 3b reps in ST. Would be nice to have the option of sliding Cabrera over to 3b if Rosario is destroying the ball come June/July.
should be back next season "no matter what" with that option. I'll be really bummed if he has a normal season for him and they cut bait.
I'd be very surprised if he isn't brought back. Very professional, kinda old school player. Might not be the perfect influence, but a clubhouse guy they look up to and need around.

Cespedes needs a BFF when Reyes leaves. Cab fits the bill
did they ever find out why tj rivera was removed from the game Â
At that pace...
Would've loved to see him get another start tonight. Hopefully Granderson and Bruce rake a bit tonight and we end up having a nice OF competition.
Did anyone call him out about saying Conforto would never bat lead-off?
1) Conforto/CF
2) Cabrera/SS
3) Cespedes/LF
4) Bruce/RF
5) Flores/3B
6) Duda/1B
7) TdA/C
8) Rivera/2B
9) Gsellman/P
Sure there is.

He's just not an MLB caliber defensive player and the "bat only" bench players are few and far between. I'd give raging hot Cecchini a shot. I'm not "giving up" on Rivera but his defense is an issue.

If you aren't going to play him at all send him back to Vegas. Get a versatile defensive option that can come in a game late.

Agreed Z. TC tends to focus too much on the batter to batter matchups. I would love to see him give Smoker a chance to pitch a full inning or two. If not, we are going to have a few guys approaching Pedro Feliciano territory as far as appearances are concerned.
I'm getting old :/

I wouldn't say the strike zone was odd per se looking at the Brooks Baseball tracker. Angel Hernandez actually had a fairly consistent zone. The problem was he was not giving the low strike to anyone that Gsellman really needs with his stuff. I also wish he would go after hitters more when he is not getting that low strike to induce weak contact. His balls have enough downward movement that if he pounded players inside he would get more hitters getting over the ball and hitting into groundouts.

Who is getting demoted? Or are they putting Josh Edgin on the DL never to return again?
7 innings for Thor? How about a CG SHO!
That's how some injuries happen (just my guess, but it seems like common sense)

I am attaching the graph on the link below. Triangle means a pitch thrown by a Mets pitcher and Square means one thrown by a Marlin. Red are strikes and Green are balls. Especially against LHB's, pitchers were not getting low strike

They haven't said yet, just that Gilmartin was told he's coming up.
This is the type of game that good teams win and these wins build character. Offense picking up defense. Bullpen picking up starters.
It's early so I will try to remain calm but if guys like Bruce, TDA and Harvey are going to play like this, they will be better than we thought.
I would love to see Walker and Reyes pick it up and I think both Wheeler and Gsellman can pitch better than they have so far.
Let's keep it going tonight with Thor!

Yep. If JT realmuto was starting instead of Ellis, the outcome might have gone in the Marlins favor. He is an excellent offensive player also
+1. And the best part is he still has a very strong and accurate arm. We need that over there right now.

Yeah, why not put Rivera at 1B and Wilmer at 3B? I know they want to give Wilmer reps at first, but he's at least a capable 3B. Rivera is a major liability there. It's too bad, the kid can hit.
Edinson Volquez
Great team win, everybody contributed. I gotta think that helps pull a team closer together.
Cespedes - Conforto - Bruce
Flores - Reyes - Walker - Duda
R Rivera
Grandy is 0 for 8 against Volquez. Cabrera needs a day off
Give K Long and TDA a ton of credit for his blazing start.

My lineup is....
1.) Conforto CF
2.) TDA C
3.) Duda 1B
4.) Cespedes LF
5.) Bruce RF
6.) Walker
7.) Cabrera
8.) Reyes
the Mets must be considered a real contender for the World Series.

If Conforto and TDA really established themselves as dependable "stars" this year though, I might change my mind a little bit. But right now the only guy we can depend on going into 2018 is Ces.
I'd be very surprised if he isn't brought back. Very professional, kinda old school player. Might not be the perfect influence, but a clubhouse guy they look up to and need around.

should be back next season "no matter what" with that option. I'll be really bummed if he has a normal season for him and they cut bait.

Cespedes needs a BFF when Reyes leaves. Cab fits the bill
For swinging through 3 straight pitches with the bases loaded? I doubt he was hurt, but just wasn't any good
