NY Post- 'Proof Eli Manning Was in on Memorabilia Scheme'

Suburbanites : 4/13/2017 5:25 pm
Can Eli be this foolish? These guys are known sleazes, why would he want anything to do with them? The Post isn't the most reputable newspaper in the world, not that any of them are these days, but if true this is very disappointing. The haters are going to have a lot of fun with this one.

that's evidence of an attempt to defraud?

I sincerely doubt it.

He asked for stuff that "could pass as game worn"

how is that proof of fraud?

It happened 7 years ago, but the Eli emails are just surfacing now and it looks pretty apparent he knowingly participated in this thing. All I'm saying is it's disappointing and yes I'm a little concerned that now that Eli is tied to this thing there could be some ramifications.
That e-mail doesn't prove anything......
Dry Lightning : 4/13/2017 5:35 pm : link
Sounds to me he is asking for legitimate game used stuff that can pass as game used under whatever specs they have to pass for. It is a ridiculous lawsuit and Eli and the Giants have done nothing wrong. The individual who brought the suit needs to be sanctioned by the courts for bringing in such frivolous nonsense.
Because if you try to pass something off as "game worn"
Dave in Hoboken : 4/13/2017 5:38 pm : link
to clients, but it really isn't, and you're asking people to find something that can "pass as game used", well, there you go?
This is very weak Proof.
shelovesnycsports : 4/13/2017 5:40 pm : link
That Tex can be taken a few way and a good lawyer will do just that.
There are no ramifications.
Devon : 4/13/2017 5:41 pm : link
This exchange is purposely being put out there by the plaintiff's lawyer in the most negative spin it can be and it's still inconclusive as to what was actually exchanged materially.

Eli isn't some noble saint like some want him to be, but if this is all they've got on him in this scheme, this is a waste of time (and money) by the courts.
I'll Stop Being Fraidy Scared
Suburbanites : 4/13/2017 5:43 pm : link
And stand down and hope this just goes away. I just didn't like what I read today, that's all. There have been very few athletes who've come through this market that I have more personal respect for than Eli. Even as a 29 year old I wouldn't have expected him in anyway being involved with what I consider a very shady subculture like the memorabilia sleazes. They remind me of people that used to be in the payphone or vending machine industry.

ITA. The lawyers jump several steps from what Eli said.

Can this political bait be enough to ban this dupe already?

Anyway:

In a statement, lawyers for the Giants said: “The email, taken out of context, was shared with the media by an unscrupulous memorabilia dealer and his counsel who for years has been seeking to leverage a big payday.”

“The email predates any litigation, and there was no legal obligation to store it on the Giants server,” the statement added.
This is a try at a money grab
shelovesnycsports : 4/13/2017 6:01 pm : link
I can see the lawyers for the Giants and Eli tearing up these guys in court because who would settle with this flimsy case of cell phone Texts? Serious this is just a sleazy attorney trying to get a payday on an athletes good name.
I may be approaching this with Giants colored glasses
Matt M. : 4/13/2017 6:01 pm : link
but to me that is Eli asking for game worn helmets. I would guess that asking for something to pass as game worn is likely asking it to meet whatever criteria the memorabilia world requires. There is nothing there even hinting at an attempt to defraud anyone or participation in any scheme. There is also nothing but history of being a more than upstanding citizen.

If I had to guess, this was a failed attempt to extort Eli and the Giants and Steiner. So the next move is to sue and hope they settle rather than get dragged to court. Obviously, this email didn't scare anyone off.
I don't think people even read the article.

Helmets can mean anything, code word, Baseball batting helmet,a prophylactic? A lawyer can have a ball with this. Game can mean anything? A Date, Could be locker room lingo.
could even be talking gaming terms.
Not good.
lawguy9801 : 4/13/2017 6:38 pm : link
I don't think the emails show that Eli intended to defraud Steiner, but that he didn't care whether or not the equipment he gave to Steiner actually was game-used. It might have been, it might not have been - it's not proof that anything Skiba gave over actually was not game-used, but it certainly raises a lot of questions.

Those of you blowing this off are looking at this with rose-colored glasses. Eli has some explaining to do.

you are being ridiculous, while i agree this stuff has no merit to an actual racketeering scheme and Eli's defense lawyers would laugh at this.

if the texts are real, the went to joe skiba who is the equipment manager for a football team. he sent that message after getting a message about acquiring game used memorabilia.

Here's a quote from Karen Kessler a Spokeswoman for the the Giants law firm McCarter and English. Courtesy of the NYDN.

“The email, taken out of context, was shared with the media by an unscrupulous memorabilia dealer and his counsel who for years has been seeking to leverage a big payday,” Karen Kessler said in a statement. “The email predates any litigation, and there was no legal obligation to store it on the Giants server.

Eli Manning is well known for his integrity and this is just the latest misguided attempt to defame his character,” she added.

This doesn't look or sound good.
"Could pass as game used" can mean a bunch of different things.
Britt in VA : 4/13/2017 7:16 pm : link
Is it game used if it's a preseason game?

Is it game used if it was a preseason game that he didn't play in, but was issued a helmet while he stood on the sideline?

Is it game used if he wore it in a scrimmage in practice?

game "used" is a really, really loose term.
from the article
oghwga : 4/13/2017 7:19 pm : link
Inselberg’s co-plaintiffs include diehard Giants fan Michael Jakab, who shelled out $4,300 for a helmet purportedly worn by Manning during the team’s 2007 Super Bowl season — but which he claims is really just a “$4,000 paperweight.”

IMO that's what it was when he bought it. I don't get the desire of grown men to pay a premium to own clothing worn by other grown men.

Autographs, pictures, the whole thing should die out by the time you're 12.

Ok. Thank you. TBH, I still don't see anything different from when the story first came out three years ago. The emails are never shown within its proper context, just in these cryptic little sound bites. Eli handed over his emails last week. It just feels like Inselberg's side is hoping for a big payday played out publically. Eli cares a great deal about his reputation especially to the fans. Like I said, I'm heavily partial to Eli, but even still, it all seems pretty flimsy.
If Eli sat on a helmet
tomjgiant : 4/13/2017 7:58 pm : link

My guess is give me something that was actually used in a game, and does show some game use. A scratch, grass stain, etc. Not a brand new helmet worn in a game by a guy in a game that was only on kickoffs and didn't hit anyone.

You do understand these were allegedly Eli Manning game used items, correct? That's the only reason Eli was even involved at any level.
