3:03 As a Mets fan I think it's pretty cool (rare) to find a good local talent. Any thoughts on Queens native Quentin Holmes? Around where do you project him being drafted?
Keith Law
3:03 Probably goes in the 25-50 range. Toolsy, big question around the hit tool and ability to make contact.
Daniel
2:14 Lets get the obvious out of the way... Mets fans are already clamoring for Amed Rosario (due in large part to Reyes awful start). When do you project Rosario to be ready to help the Mets? When would you promote him?
Keith Law
2:15 Midyear? I worry that Vegas isn't going to help Rosario develop at the plate at all, because it's a good hitting environment where mistakes aren't necessarily punished (and sometimes get rewarded). He may end up needing a promotion to continue to develop as a hitter, especially in recognizing breaking stuff and laying off those pitches out of the zone.
Phil
2:21 Keith, I've read some good things about Columbia RHP Colin Holderman. He had a great first outing. Any thoughts on him? Is he potentially the next "Warthen surprise"?
Keith Law
2:21 I think he had a great first outing. That's it. He's not a better prospect than he was a week ago, when he was a fringe guy starting a little lower than he should given his age.
Olerud?
Olerud?
Olerud had an elite eye at the plate. Of current players I'd say maybe Hosmer? We still don't know how much/low little power Smith will hit for. It's extremely early in the season either way. He has 3 doubles and 1 "HR" (it was off a position player who was pitching so....). Kid can hit, now we have to see what the power looks like.

For those of us who don't follow minors as closely, who is a good MLB comp for Dom Smith?

James Loney?
They have some interesting internal options (though none really in AAA). Corey Taylor, Tyler Bashlor, Alberto Baldonado to name 3. As for "scrap heap" there just isn't much out there right now. The available pitchers are either hurt and rehabbing or really bad. Hochevar should be doing a showcase soon however.
I always thought it would be kind of cool to bounce around the minor leagues for a few years. You get to live in a few different random towns and maybe spend a couple of months in the DR. The money stinks of course but it's not a lifetime job. Maybe I've seen Bull Durham too many times.

It's probably fun for ages 22-27 but maybe depressing ages 28-33 if you havn't really cracked into the bigs yet.

Unless your in Vegas. ;) I actually wonder if some guys would consider going there just because of the atmosphere/limelight ect.

Triple-A Las Vegas (Pacific Coast)
Why He’s Here: .344/.353/.344
Rosario spent just two months in Double-A last year, but it’s hard to argue he wasn’t ready for a promotion after he hit .341/.392/.481 in 54 games in the Eastern League last year. Rosario has the combination of hitting ability and defensive skill at a premium position to become a cornerstone player in the near future for the Mets. (BB)

Triple-A Las Vegas (Pacific Coast)
Why He’s Here: .406 AVG
The Mets’ No. 2 prospect dropped 24 pounds in the offseason by cutting out wet burritos from his diet, and the slimmed-down Smith had an excellent first week in his new form. Smith slashed .406/.441/.594 with five multi-hit nights in eight games, including a big 4-for-6 night with four runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBIs. (KG)

Check out "The Only Rule Is It Has to Work: Our Wild Experiment Building a New Kind of Baseball Team", the book Ben Linbergh and Sam Miller wrote about their experiences running the Sonoma Stompers, an independent minor league team on the very lowest rung of the totem pole.
The point of the experiment was for them to try out some of their unorthodox ideas about how to manage a ball club. There's not much of that, really. But it's an interesting dive into a world of baseball that I didn't even know existed. The Pacific Association, where the Stompers play is several levels below "top tier" independent teams like the Long Island Ducks. Guys on those teams don't dream of making it to the show, they dream of getting some swings in low A ball.
I guess you have never been to Tijuana Flats lol.

I don't mind the comp when you read the end of the sentence. He says that Rosario at 21 years old is "that" in the major league today.
He mentioned that they have not renewed with the White Sox to go past 2020 and that Chicago is also in the market to move their AAA farm team closer to the mid west.
If the White Sox leave Charlotte in 2020, would they become an option for the Mets? Maybe renew with Las Vegas for two years to gap till Charlotte opens up.
Ideally Rochester, but that is taken by Minnesota's AAA team(!)
