Giants Mock -Analysis

Joe in CT : 4/14/2017 12:14 pm
Some of you who know me understand I love this time of year. I have been doing mock draft analysis for the past 30 years (A very long time with little success). It's not easy trying to read the minds of the GM/Scouting Dept. but it's fun none the less. My first major hit was during EA's tenor during the 2003 draft when I had nailed down center out of Colorado, Wayne Lucier as the pick in the 7th round. Wooohoo, unfortunately he did not last long in blue as many 7th rounders usually do not. I also had success in '09 with nailing Hakeem Nicks (I believe many Giant fans were on board that year as well). My other acheivements were Marvin Austin, Tyler Sash, and last year nailing both Sterling Shepard and Jerell Adams, although I did have Giants taking Adams in the 4th round. So now here are my thoughts on 2017 draft:

1st round, 23rd pick: Zach Cunningham, OLB, 6'4, 234, Vanderbilt
2nd round, 55th pick: Chris Wormley, DT, 6'3, 305, Michigan
3rd round, 87th pick: Antonio Garcia, OT, 6'6, 302, Troy
4th round, 140th pick: James Conner, RB, 6'2, 233, Pittsburgh
5th round, 167th pick: Shaq Griffin, CB, 6'0, 190, UCF
6th round, 207th pick: Zane Gonzalez, PK, 6'0, 202, Arizona St.
7th round, 241st pick: Corey Levin, OG, 6'4, 307, Chattanooga

UDFA:

Jamari Staples, WR, 6'3, 195, Louisville
Brisley Estime, WR, 5'8, 186, Syracuse (new RS)
Nate Iese, FB, 6'3, 252, UCLA

Have lot's of respect for what Sy does and I will freely admit I do not watch tape and form most of my analysis from CBS Sports (Rob Rang), Colin at GBN, and Ourlad's. Please feel free to post your thoughts both positive and negative.

Go Giants!
Great Draft

I'd prefer to draft a DT later but other than that you nailed it. Good job.
Plausible is the word I'd use

Several players I think highly of as well. Not a fan of drafting PK's though but it's a 6th rounder.
I don't think Garcia makes it to the 55th pick...

...let alone the 83rd pick. And if you asked me to guess a surprise pick for round one, Garcia would be the man. I just have a feeling he is going a lot earlier than is currently predicted.

As for Gonzalez, he could go as early as the 3rd round. One pro scout said he's been doing this for 20 years and Gonzalez is the highest grade he's given on a kicker.
zach Cunningham

No thanks. A drag down tackler with little to no thump in the run game, without sideline to sideline speed. I don't understand the draw other to say that we finally drafted an LB in round 1.

Not really excited with any of the picks with the exception of Griffen, whom I think has the tools to be very good.

Wormley, is a starter .. but I'm not sure where.. end or DT? I'd like to see more impact with the pick in a very deep draft.
the only problems with that draft is that

it manages to steer way clear of the strength of the draft - TE and DB --

though you have a DB in a late round -- you would seemingly eschew a real good player early on -- and you have zero TE's drafted

For that reason I say Pffffft!!!
However, I do like a number of players you have drafted FWIW

I like Wormley - I like Cunningham - I like Conner -- but I wanna see TE and CB drafted in premium rounds

don't think Wormley and Garcia will be available in the second and third rounds. I also think the Giants want a bigger LT prospect than Garcia, who looks like he's maxed out his frame.

Here's a hint. The Giants have drafted either WR, DL or DB with at least two of their top 3 picks (last year 3 of 3) in every year Reese has been GM.
I like it but may change 1 pick

No DT in rd 2. Instead get the best TE on the board.

This year I think TE will replace WR though, DL I see in the top 3, the other is OL. I also see RB as a sure higher draft pick, no lower then round 4. I think they will grab a DB, but I don't think that happens until later in the draft, I also think they may grab a linebacker this year also.

First off, would rather have Njoku in round 1 but I believe Cunningham might turn into a good rush LB which we have not have in a while, this would greatly improve our pass rush if he pans out. Wormley has played DE/DT but our need is at 3 tech and that is where they would try and get him to excel.

I can see us swapping DT/CB if they have someone in 2nd round they really like, and then grab a DT in round 5, i'd be fine with that. I selected Wormley mostly because Giants FO already had shown some interest. Not sure I agree about TE, how many do you anticipate we carry? I am fine if Tye were replaced by it's almost a given both Adams and Ellison are sticking, we shall see.

That scout is overpaid.
No thanks

Exactly why you steer of clear of those positions. Plenty to go around. Can't get this obsession with TE's around here. DT or LB imo
Don't like rounds 4-7

Think there are better talents than those ones. Really don't like Conner with our 4th pick. I bet there are much better rushers there. If they want a big slow back, I'd rather pick De'Veon Smith later on in day 3 tbh.
