NFT: Need some advice from any do-it yourselfers out there

montanagiant : 4/14/2017 2:27 pm
We have a home built in the 70's and I want to update our Closet doors. Most of them consist of the Bi-fold type. When I measure these they come out to 29.5"w X 78" tall. The header only allows for about 1/2" play.

I go online and all I see are 30 X 80" doors. Without the header covering the track, it's 80". So are those measurements online the door themselves or the openings?

generally the size refers to the rough opening.
yes 80 should be the rough opening.

also, you can always trim the bottom of the door. Suggest going to HD and measuring the door as well as the entire jam that they are going to sell you.

Dimensions of the door...

....refer to the slab itself. Standard rough opening for and 80" door is 81 1/2 a 82" and ~2" wider than the width of the slab.

I've installed dozens of doors in older homes that were less than 80" - your choices are to special order 78" doors (which is actually common - some stores may actually carry them in stock) or cut down the jamb and slab with a circular saw to fit the opening. I'm guessing you should be able to fit a 30" width wise you'll just have more limited room to shim and may have to shave a bit off the latch side.

Should read "an 80" door is 81 1/2 - 82" "
If you do cut down...

...the slab and you're using hollow core you'll have to plug the bottom with some 1x material as you may cut off the solid framing at the bottom.

Right, you may only have an inch to work with on the bottom before you get to the hollow portion
So I just got on Lowes online

And when you click on their 30x80" doors it says this:
Quote:
Common: 30-in x 80-in; Actual: 29.5-in x 79-in

Thanks Ryan, yeah I thought that maybe my doors were uncommon and this was going to be a pain but I am seeing some on Home depots site that are our dimensions
