WR Corey Davis (Western Michigan) to drop?

Anakim : 4/17/2017 2:08 pm
From Eric Galko:

"ó NFL Draft fans might be mad, but Western Michiganís Corey Davis is more likely to go in the second round than in the top 20. He has a lot of high second-round grades, and I donít think heíll last long in Round 2."

I kind of figured this would happen given the weak competition of the MAC and also the fact that he hasn't worked out so there's no Combine or Pro Day numbers, but I've seen this guy play quite a bit and he's the real deal. He has the size, speed, route running ability, toughness and intangibles that teams crave. I don't know if he can be that #1 WR for a team but I have very little doubt that he'll be an exceptional #2 target.

If he is available at 23 and the Giants are ok with his medicals, I would rush to the podium. He's a top 15 talent in my book and I don't care if we're loaded at WR. We'll find a spot for Davis. Marshall is signed for only 2 years anyway.
He looked great
Sy'56 : 4/17/2017 2:11 pm : link
when matched up against non-MAC opponents.

That said...he isn't head and shoulders above the next few guys and they are healthy....
If Davis is on the board
allstarjim : 4/17/2017 2:12 pm : link
At 23 the Giants should take him. I think this guy is incorrect and he will go in the top 20, but it's possible he falls, sure. But Davis is going to be a star receiver. Would be great to have him here and ready to step right in for Marshall or OBJ if either get hurt, as well as be an heir apparent in 2 years after Marshall's contract is up.

Who are you referring to? Like Kupp, JuJu and Zay Jones?

I have it:

1) Williams
2) Davis
3) Ross III
4) Zay Jones
5) Cooper Kupp

You take the BPA. You don't reach because you have a position of need. That's what crappy teams do.

Exactly. Have we not seen how many OT busts there have been in recent drafts? Guys that were supposed to be stars who can barely find a starting spot in the league? Yet, we think the Giants should just draft an OT in the first round because it's a position of need, even if there are clear question marks with all the prospects. If there's an OT that is close to the grade you give your BPA, then yes, you pick him. But if there's a player with a much higher grade available, you can't pass on that player, regardless of need.
But, let's say you think that Lamp is a future RG star, or J. Davis
yatqb : 4/17/2017 2:28 pm : link
the next great MLB. Even if you think that Corey will be a top WR you might go for another player.

I agree that you don't go away from your board, but this team seems to me to need an offensive lineman or MLB more than another WR, and going that way would seem logical, especially in a year with a deep WR class.

He would be a good value at 23. The Giants don't really have anything at WR besides the starting trio of OBJ, Marshall, and Shep, and Marshall is near the end and was banged up a good portion of last year. Sy gave him an upside of Allen Robinson. I think a good comp for him is Amari Cooper. If you don't see the value in a player like that opposite OBJ then I don't know what to tell you.

Actually, Fantasy Football folks would only want there to be 3 WRs on the Giants at most so they could maximize the production of those players. But keep railing against something you don't have a clue about.

Can't argue OL but we do not need a MLB. We have the short-term and long-term starter on this team already, in Keenan Robinson and B.J. Goodson. And Goodson will play, he is the starting MLB of the future, and he will be awfully good. You want a future WIL on this team, that's fine. But we don't have a need at the MIKE.
You might be right, jim, although Goodson's still got to prove it.
yatqb : 4/17/2017 2:39 pm : link
Robinson already has, but I believe the rumors about the Giants salivating about Jarrad Davis, so who knows what they think about the team's MLB position.

So anything other than a WR @ #23 is a reach?
I don't have a preference as far as #23 goes
UConn4523 : 4/17/2017 2:40 pm : link
but I'm taking the WR over the MLB assuming both carry the same grade. It just isn't close for me.
Giants won't draft a WR in
Simms11 : 4/17/2017 2:55 pm : link
Round 1. Value may be there, but need is certainly not. Giants tend to look at need as well as value, especially in Round 1.
everyone looks at need and value
UConn4523 : 4/17/2017 3:00 pm : link
and if it came down to WR vs. MLB, I'm guessing they go WR. If it was WR vs. DB, i'm guessing its going to be DB.

As for WR, we have Marshall on a 2 year deal max and a soon to be mega-paid Beckham. WR isn't a need in 2017 but it could be as soon as 2018 especially if Marshall breaks down.

I'm not advocating the Giants go WR, just pointing out that you need to look beyond 2017 when talking draft, especially high picks.
interesting

this article dated march 11, 2017 came out after we signed Bradon Marshall that the Giants "still love" Corey Davis

Scout: Giants still in love with Davis - ( New Window )
People talk about the OL class...
Milton : 4/17/2017 3:19 pm : link
But the WR class is pretty weak as well.
Williams could drop too
KWALL2 : 4/17/2017 3:23 pm : link
Great in traffic but he isn't super explosive and has injury concerns.

I can see the 3 TEs going before any of the WRs. And maybe somebody picks the burner Ross before any of the big WRs.
Why
AcidTest : 4/17/2017 3:36 pm : link
is he falling? It can't be because of talent. Most teams undoubtedly have him as their #1 WR based on talent alone.

So it must be health. He had ankle surgery that kept him out of the combine, and he then didn't participate in his pro day. I don't think he's worked out for any team since the surgery, and I assume that he won't before draft day.

If he checks out medically, then I'd be thrilled with him at #23. But if everyone in front of us passes on him, then why would the Giants think their medical evaluation is better than all those other teams? For that reason, I'd probably pass.

Yeah. I think it depends how far apart they are in your rankings. For me, I think Davis is a top 15 player, whereas Davis and Lamp are more in the 25-35 range.

I don't think

he'll go as high as originally been projected but I don't think he'll make it to 23 either.. BUT its the draft. We see players fall every year so I won't rule it out.

With that said, I'd be all over Corey Davis. Brandon Marshall is good for a year then we could move on. Plus its gives us some leverage with OBJ. If we develop Corey Davis into a #1 we won't be as pressed to sign Beckham to that big contract.

No way... I don't care how good Davis is or becomes you still can't let a talent like OBJ leave. They should do whatever is necessary to get him his long-term extension, he's a cornerstone talent, the Michael Jordan of the NFL right now.

Got you. If you check his WR rankings he has... Davis 84, Williams 83, Z.Jones 82, KCupp/AStewart/JRoss 80, CHenson/JuJu 79, Westbrook 78, JReynolds 77.
Davis would be great insurance if OBJ or Marshall goes down, but
CT Charlie : 4/17/2017 5:34 pm : link
we're not looking for insurance at #23. Harris, Lewis and King are all serviceable back-ups -- maybe even better.
Zay Jones

I wouldn't go as far as saying he's the MJ of the NFL. That's a little bias. Great player, top 5 at his position? Sure but the drama queen attitude is wearing a little on me. If he doesn't lose that and mature I'd be less inclined to sign him to a cap crippling contract and more inclined to move him for draft picks if we had another #1 already on roster.

And let me be clear on that, that's ONLY if we had another #1 already on roster.

Thank you thank you thank you. If Lamp can be an all pro G or even a very good RT the value is equal OVER A 4th WR. HOW many people wanted Treadwell last year? He was a big disappointment. Sure another WR is good but there will be guys with similar grades at OL, S, CB and LB and most likely even a TE who will be just as impactful.

An according to many so would Lamp, Davis and Reddick at LB, Howard and a bunch of other guys. And just Dave Te thinks Lamp is a future All Pro. Which do the Giants need more of both are there. Saying he's a Cooper is great. Heard the same crap about Treadwell last year.

Davis may be a stud but need needs to meet value. That's what all teams do. BPA always is a myth
It's a lousy 1st round WR class
Torrag : 4/17/2017 10:36 pm : link
I've downgraded Ross to 2nd Round off ACL's to both knees and a shoulder injury. Davis is hurt, played a lower level of comp and hasn't been able to participate in post season evaluations outside of medical checks. Not good.

You didn't hear anything of the sort from me re: Treadwell. I couldn't stand the thought of the Giants drafting him, I was a big Michael Thomas in the 2nd guy.
