How important is a stud TE? Gates, Gonzalez, Whitten, Graham, Davis...0 rings. Gronk (and I am sure there are others) would be the exception. I know the open up the offense especially against a cover 2 defense and also can help out our OL, but is round 1 early?
A stud TE is great weapon. Personally, I think Shaheen is a game changing TE in this draft. Would love to see him on the team.
And who was the "stud TE" for the Patriots before Gronk? They won a handful of rings with Daniel Graham, Christian Fauria, and Rod Rutledge at TE.
Some say there are not enough catches for everybody and I say the more weapons the better.
But say the pick is between Shaheen and say, Zay Jones or a Kevin King or a Farrell Basham... I would take any of those guys over Shaheen because the position they play is so much more valuable, and if they are a great talent, it just is better for the team. Example, you can get by with a JAG at TE, we see it all the time. ATL made the Super Bowl with Jacob Tamme and Austin Hooper. But say you have pedestrian receivers, or guys that are mediocre corners... We see how bad that is in determining wins and losses. You have to have good corners to win a Super Bowl. You have to have playmakers at receiver, and you have to be able to get after the QB.
But if Howard is there at 23, take him. I can envision him out wide one day with Jerrell Adams inline on the field together.
Shockey has 1 and he didn't even play in the game.

He won in 2009 season w/ Saints.
A player like this, instantly improves the OL.....how many run plays were immediately stopped because our TE's whiffed on blocks?
If we get a good blocking TE, we can go to a two TE setup on 3rd and short, and create all kinds of options for Eli.....
It just amazes me, that some guy, who may not be that talented as a receiving TE, does not sharpen his skills to become a devastating blocker, and create a career for himself in the NFL....
