NFT: Mets talk 4/18 Wheelz up!

ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 9:30 am
-Mets take on Phillies with Wheeler on the hill tonight. Will face Zack Eflin

-Mets look to rebound off three crushing losses

-Lugo to begin throwing today

-Familia expected back Thursday (will not be eased into closing role)

-Mets quietly worried about Reyes

-LGM!
Very happy the Mets got to rest a bit yesterday
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 9:51 am : link
I eagerly want to clean up this roster next. We cant stick with a 4 man bench for long and Familia should replace a scrub soon enough. Hoping Familia's get's Edgin spot....
Worried about Reyes ...
Beezer : 4/18/2017 10:14 am : link
... because he's not hitting? Or something else?

Why worry? They've got parts to plug in.

Doubtful Reyes is completely shot. Just struggling. It happens. Long season.

That's coming from Kristie Ackert Beezer. Here's the link.

I agree with you though it's too early
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 10:32 am : link
to make big changes. He's the best arm we have over there currently. I'd give him until about the middle of May. If he still isn't hitting at all I go with TJ or Rivera. Maybe shifting guys around the infield if I had to.
Supposed to say
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 10:32 am : link
"TJ or Cheech"
Salas and Reed
sshin05 : 4/18/2017 10:39 am : link
struggles the last 3 games (5 runs over 1.1 IP) may suggest overusage. Montero, Blevins, Robles, and Smoker 5 appearances 3.1 IP 0 runs. Edgin gave up 1 run over 1.2 IP. Edgin is harder to trust at the moment but I wouldnt give up on him just yet, he's a loogy.
A month and a half is a long time to wait for a player
PhiPsi125 : 4/18/2017 10:39 am : link
giving you zero production offensively. And he hasn't exactly been a defensive guru at third either (not bad but nothing to rave about either).

Again, like with Granderson...you don't need to bench the guy but inserting fresh players that will actually contribute a little more often wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Reyes has been the worst staring player (offensively) since the beginning of the season.
Mets should be licking their chops
sshin05 : 4/18/2017 10:41 am : link
once they get into the bullpens of the Phillies and Nats. Both are bottom 3 in MLB.

Thats a really, really bad headline. Those that were counting on him to be an average, or above, productive 3B were out of their minds. Felt all offseason Valbuena would have been the PERFECT utility guy to pair with Flores for this team. Ironically he's been hurt - making him even more Met like than I imagined.
I'm not sure if it matters
sshin05 : 4/18/2017 11:01 am : link
but reyes walked in his last 3 games. It's possible he's seeing the ball better and stopped getting himself out by swinging at pitches out of the strike zone. If his plate discipline is better then he should be closer to the Reyes we know.
Guys tend to go cold for a month all the time though
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 11:02 am : link
It's not like a real cold streak lasts a few days. I'm not a huge Reyes guy anyway so Im fine working in a few other options. I just wouldn't pull the plug yet when he easily has the best arm over at 3B.
One guy that seems to
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 11:11 am : link
Be definitely seeing the ball better is Walker. Would be nice if he really heated up.
Id move walker to third

And call up cheech or play flores
Ugh Smoker is throwing a filthy changeup
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 11:26 am : link
And a better slider. Why do we need a third lefty in the pen? I don't even hate Edgin. He might "meh" his way into a half way decent season. Wouldn't shock me. The problem is he is out of options and is holding a spot over more deserving options. A second or third LOOGY isn't that big of a need in a bullpen.
It's a shame to see what has happened to David Wright and Jose Reyes

Metrics suggest when Walker was at 3b he was absolutely awful (and it's been a long time). I don't think that is an option.
Walker
DanMetroMan : 4/18/2017 2:18 pm : link
15 games at 3b career in the bigs (none since 2010), HE was deemed the inferior defensive 3b to... Pedro Alvarez. 15 career games -31.5 UZR
Might seem ridiculous but I dont think
ZGiants98 : 4/18/2017 2:23 pm : link
a player needs more than a day of experience in Metland for a SS to move to 3B. It's the same side of the infield and you need a strong arm. Reyes picked it up quickly (not saying he's great) and Cabrera would too.

Ideally Cabrera moves to 3B when Rosario is ready.

However, the Mets did ask Walker if he would play 3B prior to signing both times and he's been very vocal about willing to play there.

I just dont think the Mets care all that much unless he's a complete butcher. They yanked Murphy back and forth so many times and he was bad defensively everywhere.

He was considered "awful" at 3b in the minors. Again, he moved over for Pedro Alvarez who is a DH. Walker is unlikely to feel comfortable moving over to a position he hasn't played in 7 years while he's not hitting in a FA walk season.

I'm not saying there is absolutely no chance. I just doubt it's the first or second thing they try. I wish they had a 3b prospect on the way but sadly there doesn't seem to be anyone of note. Maybe Urena can build back some of his prospect status. I'm not a believer in Thompson.

You do a good job with these. Tough to write one after a game like tonight :(

I think Wilmer should get more abs than Reyes at this point, but either way Mets are still better than they've shown the past few nights and a bunch of wins are coming up IMO.
Are the Mets better than what they've shown? I'm not so sure anymore.
PhiPsi125 : 4/19/2017 12:26 am : link
Of course they will rattle off a bunch of wins soon. Only to follow that up by a bunch of maddening losses. They are the epitome of a .500 team with a small bump in wins due to their excellent starting pitching.

Their approach and philosophy is the same as last year...awful. If they don't bang out HRs then they rarely win. I'm all for saying "it's still early" but nothing I've seen this far makes me believe anything has changed. They seem to be the same one-dimensional team. I was hoping that healthy players might be the difference maker but it seems that it's the offensive philosophy that's breeds this type of play.

MMO wrote a great article on this back in January detailing the offensive woes from last season.

Funny how the one thing most people agree on, the players play hard for Collins, is the one thing I have consistently been bitching about for years. I don't know what others are watching, but I havent seen hard nosed, going through a wall baseball in Citi in several years... I'd settle for just one player who runs hard the full 90 feet to first.
who runs hard the full 90 feet to first.
Torrag : 4/19/2017 8:04 am : link
That's an exaggeration...and it's the same all over the league. This isn't our father's game anymore in that regard. Coaches don't sit players for taking their foot off the gas when running out ground balls. They should but they don't. Collins has the clubhouse, that's not in question.
One thing I have major respect for with Collins
Shecky : 4/19/2017 8:16 am : link
They say people can't change - which I don't believe. Terry came in with a reputation of players HATING him. He will leave here with players having nothing but respect for him. Similar to another TC in NY.
BUT
The team does not play "hard" for him. If anything, I'd argue the opposite. And don't give me the line players don't hustle like in the good old days. There were PLENTY of lazier players back in the day than in todays game.
well at least the bullpen
pjcas18 : 4/19/2017 8:19 am : link
is thriving in Familia's absence. Certainly couldn't use another quality arm.

The Mets HAVE to snap out of it, a fast start was critical given the schedule.
'don't give me the line '...
Torrag : 4/19/2017 8:22 am : link
It's not a line and it's not the players that are different it's the expectation. It's ok to pull up on that run to first. 'Why risk the injury' is the mindset. Coaches let it slide all over MLB. That's the point. They like him and try hard for him.

That's important but as a strategic guy and bullpen guy Collins blows chunks.
I will move on and drop the "hustle" argument
Shecky : 4/19/2017 8:32 am : link
But keep in mind my favorite player of all time was perhaps keith Miller. yeah, that guy lol.

First pro game of his life. Head first into the bag. Dislocates his pinky. That would be considered hustle for most players. But oh no. He pops that pinky back in all by himself. Finishes the game (this is where I think 'fear of injury' is more like full of shit...).

Doesn't just finish the game though. Keeps playing. And takes him REINJURING IT before the team forces him to the DL. I don't exect every player to have that in them. It's one of the rarest traits to find in an athlete. BUT, when you are given g-d given ability, respect the game and play hard.

As an FYI - Hanley is perhaps my least favorite player of this generation for those very same reasons. And why I am not the biggest fan of Ces.

Yeah, TDA should have moved but it looked like he just froze as if he didnt know where Reyes was going to go. It also looked like Reyes was moving away from TDA until the last minute when he changed direction towards TDA. Even so, the ball was in his glove. How it popped out, I'll never know. He catches that ball and it's likely a win for the Mets.

Getting out of the way for sure but the ball was in Reyes glove. I have to put that mostly on Reyes. Also why isn't Montero on a plane to Vegas for an infielder? Seriously? Enough.

Also nobody mentioned it but why remove Salas who got three outs (really 4) with two outs in the 8th with a righty coming up? Why go to your LOOGY there? Ugh. Oh well.
