Very happy the Mets got to rest a bit yesterday
ZGiants98 : 9:51 am : link
I eagerly want to clean up this roster next. We cant stick with a 4 man bench for long and Familia should replace a scrub soon enough. Hoping Familia's get's Edgin spot....
Worried about Reyes ...
Beezer : 10:14 am : link
... because he's not hitting? Or something else?

Why worry? They've got parts to plug in.

Doubtful Reyes is completely shot. Just struggling. It happens. Long season.

That's coming from Kristie Ackert Beezer. Here's the link.

I agree with you though it's too early
ZGiants98 : 10:32 am : link
to make big changes. He's the best arm we have over there currently. I'd give him until about the middle of May. If he still isn't hitting at all I go with TJ or Rivera. Maybe shifting guys around the infield if I had to.
Supposed to say
ZGiants98 : 10:32 am : link
"TJ or Cheech"
Salas and Reed
sshin05 : 10:39 am : link
struggles the last 3 games (5 runs over 1.1 IP) may suggest overusage. Montero, Blevins, Robles, and Smoker 5 appearances 3.1 IP 0 runs. Edgin gave up 1 run over 1.2 IP. Edgin is harder to trust at the moment but I wouldnt give up on him just yet, he's a loogy.
A month and a half is a long time to wait for a player
PhiPsi125 : 10:39 am : link
giving you zero production offensively. And he hasn't exactly been a defensive guru at third either (not bad but nothing to rave about either).

Again, like with Granderson...you don't need to bench the guy but inserting fresh players that will actually contribute a little more often wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Reyes has been the worst staring player (offensively) since the beginning of the season.
Mets should be licking their chops
sshin05 : 10:41 am : link
once they get into the bullpens of the Phillies and Nats. Both are bottom 3 in MLB.

Thats a really, really bad headline. Those that were counting on him to be an average, or above, productive 3B were out of their minds. Felt all offseason Valbuena would have been the PERFECT utility guy to pair with Flores for this team. Ironically he's been hurt - making him even more Met like than I imagined.
I'm not sure if it matters
sshin05 : 11:01 am : link
but reyes walked in his last 3 games. It's possible he's seeing the ball better and stopped getting himself out by swinging at pitches out of the strike zone. If his plate discipline is better then he should be closer to the Reyes we know.
Guys tend to go cold for a month all the time though
ZGiants98 : 11:02 am : link
It's not like a real cold streak lasts a few days. I'm not a huge Reyes guy anyway so Im fine working in a few other options. I just wouldn't pull the plug yet when he easily has the best arm over at 3B.
One guy that seems to
ZGiants98 : 11:11 am : link
Be definitely seeing the ball better is Walker. Would be nice if he really heated up.
Id move walker to third
spike : 11:17 am : link
And call up cheech or play flores
Ugh Smoker is throwing a filthy changeup
ZGiants98 : 11:26 am : link
And a better slider. Why do we need a third lefty in the pen? I don't even hate Edgin. He might "meh" his way into a half way decent season. Wouldn't shock me. The problem is he is out of options and is holding a spot over more deserving options. A second or third LOOGY isn't that big of a need in a bullpen.
It's a shame to see what has happened to David Wright and Jose Reyes
NYG27 : 11:41 am : link
Had such high hopes for them in the late 2000's and sad to see what injuries have done to their careers the last 5 years or so.

They both go home with rings this year if we win it all. :)
What happened to Dep026?

Matz expected to resume throwing tomorrow

Metrics suggest when Walker was at 3b he was absolutely awful (and it's been a long time). I don't think that is an option.
Walker
DanMetroMan : 2:18 pm : link
15 games at 3b career in the bigs (none since 2010), HE was deemed the inferior defensive 3b to... Pedro Alvarez. 15 career games -31.5 UZR
Might seem ridiculous but I dont think
ZGiants98 : 2:23 pm : link
a player needs more than a day of experience in Metland for a SS to move to 3B. It's the same side of the infield and you need a strong arm. Reyes picked it up quickly (not saying he's great) and Cabrera would too.

Ideally Cabrera moves to 3B when Rosario is ready.

However, the Mets did ask Walker if he would play 3B prior to signing both times and he's been very vocal about willing to play there.

I just dont think the Mets care all that much unless he's a complete butcher. They yanked Murphy back and forth so many times and he was bad defensively everywhere.

He was considered "awful" at 3b in the minors. Again, he moved over for Pedro Alvarez who is a DH. Walker is unlikely to feel comfortable moving over to a position he hasn't played in 7 years while he's not hitting in a FA walk season.
From

"A more radical plan would be shifting Neil Walker to third base and promoting second baseman Dilson Herrera from Triple-A Las Vegas. But team brass has reservations about moving Walker, who has played just 15 games at third base in the majors,"

shit. Montero's OBP against... .541. Man does he suck. I remember seeing so impressed with him seeing him in Bing.
Yeah I agree with you...
ZGiants98 : 2:34 pm : link
Just saying it wouldn't shock me if the Mets tried it anyway. They dont seem to place much of an emphasis on experience at certain positions, ect. like some teams might.

Ive seen enough. I was impressed this spring but we cant have him nibbling and trying to improve at a snails pace in the majors. I cant get Montero, Gilmartin, and Edgin off this roster fast enough.

I'm not saying there is absolutely no chance. I just doubt it's the first or second thing they try. I wish they had a 3b prospect on the way but sadly there doesn't seem to be anyone of note. Maybe Urena can build back some of his prospect status. I'm not a believer in Thompson.
Speaking of Gilmartin
ZGiants98 : 2:42 pm : link
What the heck happened to him? In 2015, in a pretty large sample, he was flat out sexy.

Is it really just Vegas? Could he succeed in a long man role again? Is he just finished?

I've
DanMetroMan : 2:43 pm : link
heard whispers his shoulder hasn't been 100% since 2015 but who knows how true it is?
Yikes, again?

Mets Lineup

Michael Conforto CF
Asdrbal Cabrera SS
Yoenis Cspedes LF
Jay Bruce RF
Neil Walker 2B
Lucas Duda 1B
Jos Reyes 3B
Travis dArnaud C
Zack Wheeler RHP
Phillies Lineup

Cesar Hernandez 2B
Daniel Nava LF
Odubel Herrera CF
Maikel Franco 3B
Michael Saunders RF
Tommy Joseph 1B
Cameron Rupp, C
Freddy Galvis SS
Zach Elfin P
Wouldn't be surprised if the Mets
ZGiants98 : 4:55 pm : link
make a concerted effort to play Conforto more. Full day off and Granderson is out of the lineup the day after doesn't bode too well for him.
Being that Grandy
sshin05 : 5:15 pm : link
is the oldest position player on the team, maybe he needs more days off. Though seems highly unlikely as he's played a lot the last few years. 155, 157, and 150 games last 3 seasons.
Phillies
sshin05 : 5:23 pm : link
lineup shouldn't scare the Mets. Hernandez and Herrera are the only dangerous players at the moment. For everyone else, Rupp's 71 OPS+ is the highest. Nava has only 14 plate appearances.
wheeler started out well with two quick outs but then
GMenLTS : 7:41 pm : link
a solo shot and a couple more batters before getting the last out only giving up 1.

Nice work by our hitters to regain the lead but reyes continues to be a blackhole in the lineup.

Apparently we're the best in the NL with RISP right now. Who woulda thought?
Reyes is brutal

Reyes swing is one of the worse
Chris L. : 7:45 pm : link
I have seen. It is a violent upper cut that has almost no chance of making contact. Who is working with this guy? They desperately need to level out his swing. You can see he has no chance at the plate.
Wheeler settles in 1-2-3
GMenLTS : 7:47 pm : link

Eflin is all over the place, walks three batters in the inning, comes
PhiPsi125 : 7:50 pm : link
up violently swinging away into the predictable out. Sit his ass down please.
Eflin is going to get sawed in half next time through
