NFT: Shoulder Tweak

OnTap : 4/18/2017 9:43 am
Tweaked my shoulder last week picking something up - not a whole lot of pain except when i reach my arm behind my back then the top hurts a little (right around the top part). I leave for vacation for 2 weeks tomorrow and I can't get into a doc beforehand but I'm worried if I wait too long something worse will progress.

I have full range of motion *again except reaching behind my back" and don't get any pain overhead movements. Anyone experience something similar? Hoping it's not a torn rotator cuff or something requiring surgery. I can't afford to miss work for the recovery.

I'll see a doc when I get back if it persists, but just curious if anyone here has something similar.
Doesn't sound too

serious. And waiting a couple of weeks won't make a difference. I would schedule an appointment now and cancel if it's feeling better in a couple of weeks. You can find some stretching/strengthening exercise to do online. ibuprofen if needed.

Sounds like you might have just pinched a nerve or something. I've done this countless times to my left shoulder. I doubt it's serious. Just try to keep it loose and stretch it out and don't do anything too strenuous - it'll heal on its own.
I've had several Shoulder Tweaks

over the years and my wife also. Seems to me that they take a long time to heal up. Maybe 2 months. Good luck and take it easy for a while.

If needed, get yourself a bottle of Aleve and don't be hesitant on taking 2 of those blue pills every 12 hours.
Could be a lot of thing, your labrum, biceps tendon, joint capsule.

It doesn't sound like a nerve unless you get pain that is shooting and sharp. Doesn't sound too serious though, so probably just give it time and try not to do anything to make it worse.
Yup to stretching and only light stuff. Also perhaps ibupropen

for a while to decrease inflammation. If it doesn't go away on its own, though, see a doc for it...even a PCP can do an early consult on it.
Honestly, don't go crazy with stretching.

If you strained something, that's only going to make it worse. Stretching is good if you're lacking movement, but it's not good for every situation.
shoulders are tough

See. A. Doctor.

Randomly trying things is obviously not working.
Go see a PT for an evaluation.

If you live in NY you don't need a Rx from a doc first.
Take my advice trust me I'm a personal trainer s

Sounds like a pulled muscle most likely it isn't your shoulder it's your back muscle. Use a tennis ball to start lay on the floor on your back. Put the ball under you along your lat muscle. Find the spot that "hurts" leave it there until the muscle releases. What you have is a spasm and needs to be released. That's all it isn't, tightness.
Doctors aren't going to do much for a shoulder unless it's severe

Rest and heat I'd think they'd recommend for a few weeks first.

I could barely raise my arm above my head for a month and my doctor gave me some rotator cuff exercises, that's it. Said he only operates on shoulders when it's extreme, as shoulder surgery is lousy.

Rotator cuff, impingement, labrum tear,....there's a lot going on with the shoulder.

My problem went away after time.
As someone who is both a Physical Therapist and a personal trainer,

I'll say it again. Go get evaluated by a therapist. It's easy, and they will know much more about what's going on with your shoulder than your primary care physician, even if they are an orthopedist. No surgery or imaging are needed, and if it's nothing, they'll let you know.
Shoulders suck

I have had an issue with my right shoulder, on and off, for the past twenty years.

I recently got sick and tired of dealing with it so I had surgery to clean up the joint and remove bone spurs.

Three months out it turns out that my issue is the biceps tendon. It gets caught riding over the front of the shoulder and gets irritated by any overhead movements.

The doctor now talks about cutting the tendon and re-inserting it lower on the bone. I'm pissed.

I can deal with the torn labrum in my hip and the torn medial meniscus in both knees, but the shoulder is a pain in my ass.

Damn. Shoulder injuries blow.
