NFT: CL quarters: Real vs. Bayern and Leicester vs. Atletico

dpinzow : 4/18/2017 2:32 pm
Real Madrid go back to the Bernabeu with a 2-1 lead in the marquee matchup of the quarterfinals.

Atletico hope to avoid Leicester magic at the King Power. They take a 1-0 lead to England against the lone British team in the quarterfinals
Gonna be tough for Bayern
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 2:51 pm : link
Isco in for Bale is a good change for Real. They'll be essentially a 4-3-1-2 with Isco working in between the lines. He's already created a turnover and a half chance in that role. Gonna be tough to keep Real scoreless here.

And as I type that Isco draws a foul on the edge of the area.
And of course Ronaldo wastes it

Leicester look a lot livelier - need to push for a goal without conceding.
and Madrid score

... so it's likely curtains.

Leicester now need 3 goals
David Alaba for Bayern has been horrific
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 3:29 pm : link
He's wasted numerous crossing opportunities and just put a free kick into the street outside the Bernabeu. Brutal.
Bayern has to win by 2 goals unless they win by 3-2 or more
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 3:29 pm : link
A 2-1 Bayern win forces extra time, a 3-2 or 4-3 Bayern win means they win by away goals. Long, long way from that though. A 1-0 Bayern win and Real wins on away goals
Leicester have actually looked a lot better this game vs the one in
Nitro : 4/18/2017 3:35 pm : link
Madrid, even registering shots on goal! Nevertheless, its going to take a magical 2nd half to come back and score 3. I haven't really been wowed by Atletico, but I guess that's the way it goes with them, brutally efficient and get the job done. At this point they don't need to attack so I expect more frustration trying to break down a 10 man defense, along with standard time wasting, 'injuries' etc.
here's the goal

Saul is really promising for Spain. Got major hopes for him.
Bayern ahead of Real 1-0 on a Lewandowski penalty
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 3:56 pm : link
time for Real to get a little worried
Leicester gets one through Vardy. Tied on the evening
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:01 pm : link
2-1 Atletico on aggregate. Leicester need 2 more to win
Vardy
Nitro : 4/18/2017 4:01 pm : link
scores.. 2 more in 30????
Leicester getting LOTS of chances
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:10 pm : link
haven't been able to get the second yet to really pressure Atletico
Real Madrid equalize, of course it's Ronaldo
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:17 pm : link
on a header. Bayern now needs to score to force extra time instead of win outright
Bayern ties it up

It's all happening at the Bernabeu
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:19 pm : link
Thomas Muller forces some pressure and Sergio Ramos kicked it into his own net! Tied on aggregate and it's going to extra time if nobody scores from here
Wow this is unreal

Advantage Bayern now, if they score 1 Real has to score 2
This game is dangerously open
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:21 pm : link
Real in particular needs to tighten shit up.
Vidal sent off for Bayern
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:25 pm : link
No way in hell that's a red
Vidal sent off
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:25 pm : link
Second yellow. Not a foul IMO. Rough on Bayern.
Bayern will finish each match of this tie with 10 men
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:27 pm : link
Brutal.

Especially when the ref could have easily sent Casemiro off
The Real defenders have got to mindful
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:33 pm : link
Bayern have been very close with some long balls, where Boateng excels in delivering the ball long. Robben is an uber threat in this situation; Spain's national team has been victimized by this in 2010 and again in 2014. Got to be careful here even a man up.
Leicester out
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:35 pm : link
They put up a spirited fight but no Premier League team in the semis this year. Real and Bayern to extra time, which Bayern has to survive playing with 10 men
Question
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:36 pm : link
I don't believe I don't know this, but if Bayern scores in extra time does that still count as an "away goal"? It shouldn't, you would think.
Vardy had a good chance to get a second, and Ulloa had a sure goal
Nitro : 4/18/2017 4:37 pm : link
blocked. It was a damn good try, can hold their heads high. The BS first leg penalty aside.
it would be an away goal

We know, Terps is making the argument that it's unfair to count the extra time as time where an away goal can be scored because it gives the away team more time to score in the second leg
30 mins extra of a home game
Nitro : 4/18/2017 4:40 pm : link
as well - away goals isn't perfect but makes sense here I think. Or make it golden (ha)
It would like be acedemic
Cenotaph : 4/18/2017 4:43 pm : link
It's unlikely Real equalizes if Bayern to score...but if they did, it would still end in Bayern's favor overall.

So agreed, it's a bit odd, but a small advantage to play the 2nd leg away, as there is no chance for extra time in the 1st leg.
Casemiro has got a lot of balls
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:49 pm : link
Diving like that on a yellow.
Leicester has been a nice story
scouser : 4/18/2017 4:50 pm : link
but their going out makes Liverpool's Champions league chances better.
Ronaldo
Go Terps : 4/18/2017 4:55 pm : link
Way offsides.
There it is, Ronaldo again (possibly offside too, but not called)
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 4:55 pm : link
Bayern with 10 men have about 15 minutes to find a goal. No penalties, either Real holds this lead or Bayern finds another goal to win
Bayern has gotten fucked

Ronaldo was again offsides I believe

Shambolic refereeing.

I'm throwing in with Dortmund and the American Messi the rest of the way.
now 4

Asensio - that one was onside.

Question is how many Bayern players chase the ref
dpinzow : 4/18/2017 5:06 pm : link
down the tunnel after the final whistle
Would have liked to see
Kyle in NY : 4/18/2017 5:07 pm : link
this play out with Vidal not shown a red and Bayern at full strength.

Ronaldo is just a clinical finisher though. Can't deny it

To be fair he should have been sent off like 20-25 minutes prior to that for a foul on Casemiro just outside the box. The refs were not good in this game at all. Missed a Ronaldo offside. Missed a Boateng penalty in the box.

Should be none. They got away with quite a few missed calls as did Madrid. Madrid should have played for a good half an hour up a man. Bad officiating overall. Two very entertaining games though. Definitely wasn't expecting Madrid to win back to back Champions League trophies so I'm not even getting angry with these games. Basically playing with house money.
Real should've been down to 10 men not Bayern

Good young attacking team.
I have a hard time seeing a young team break down
Go Terps : 4/19/2017 5:32 pm : link
Atletico or Juventus. Godin, Bonucci, and Chiellini are among the very best defenders in the world. Buffon and Oblak two of the best keepers. And all of those guys have played about a million huge matches.

I'm hoping Atletico and Real Madrid are paired up in the semifinals. Besides being a fascinating matchup, I also think it's the most likely way to get Real eliminated.
Juventus could take them out too.

Arsenal should basically buy the Monaco team

You're right, the striker and right back are as good as gone in June.
