I.e.-I thought under cba teams could only extend to the fifth year but not beyond that point
After three years...

Because rookie contracts have a MUCH less cap hit than players that get extensions in year 3..

Why pay Odell $15Million+ STARTING NOW when we dont have to pay him that for another two years?
Teams don't do it more because

They do not have to. The player is committed. If the Giants extend OBJ now...his cap number will go up for 2017 and 2018. Also, what if, heaven forbid, in year 4, he gets a NICKS like injury and is never the same again? In year 5 his contract pays him say $8 Million. If he cant recover, but you gave him a huge extension now, would you want his huge signing bonus bogging you down in dead cap space?

The Giants could then also Tag OBJ three years in a row if they choose.

They don't extend now because they have leverage and it in their best interest not to.

The only case you can make for doing that is..

The market right now for Odell is probably $15-$20million per year BUT in two years from now when hes due his extension it can be $20-$25million per year with the cap going up every year.. But even that is a reach because you would save the difference by letting him play out on his rookie deal instead of quickly throwing the money at him..
after 5th year option

After the fifth year option, there are still options should a team want to ensure the rights of a player.

Take Beckham for example. We can exercise the 5th year option for 2018.

After that, we could use the franchise tag (which still may be lower than the kind of mega- deal he will eventually get.
Franchise Tag hurts Beckham and helps Giants

Odell is the best at his position and the franchise tag is an average of the best 5 receivers which hurts him because he should get the biggest wr contract when it is his time. He will be paid like a qb 20 mil a year or more. Hopefully this all works out sooner rather than later.

Possible that the Giants may not resign him to a mega deal when Eli is done and move on. May not like it but COULD happen if he keeps doing dumb things...Norman, Boat trip etc. Interesting stat, prior to the panthers - Josh Norman incident, OBJ had 4 career drops...since then...19

We could save money in the beginning if the contract giving some cap release.
