NFT: Serena Williams Pregnant

jpennyva : 4/20/2017 9:12 am
She won the Australian Open while pregnant, too. She obviously won't play tennis again this year so there goes the possibility of a slam. I'm happy for her but it's strange to think that she could retire after having a baby so her departure from tennis feels abrupt. Though, there is something to be said for going out at the top of your game. That's not to say that she won't come back but the other players who have done so after having a baby have been a bit younger than she will be.

I imagine the other women on the tour are SOOO happy (for her)!

GOAT.

Not sure there's any serious foundation for debating her as the greatest female tennis player of all time. And unlike other most other acclaimed GOATs which can be legitimately debated, Serena goes out there alone.

Mazel tov Serena, kids are a blessing!

Not sure I agree. Martina was as dominant as anyone ever was, more so than Serena. I don't see how you can't say that Martina was the greatest ever. What did she win, something like 73 tourny's in a row?

Argument against Serena

What all-time greats did she have to face? Navratilova had to go up against Evert and Graf in their primes.

anyone could have just been ranked 10 in the world during her reign ....

Nothing to it ...
I think a lot of this is subjective (people only seeing one or

other), so its impossible to know. However I will fall on just facts and pick Navratilova (from Wikipedia):

Navratilova was World No. 1 for a total of 332 weeks in singles, and a record 237 weeks in doubles, making her the only player in history to have held the top spot in both singles and doubles for over 200 weeks. She was year-end singles No. 1 seven times, including a record five consecutive years, as well as year-end doubles No. 1 five times, including three consecutive years during which she held the ranking for the entire year.

She won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles (an all-time record), and 10 major mixed doubles titles, marking the open-era record for most Grand Slam titles. She reached the Wimbledon singles final 12 times, including nine consecutive years from 1982 through 1990, and won the women's singles title at Wimbledon a record nine times (surpassing Helen Wills Moody's eight Wimbledon titles),[5] including a run of six consecutive titles—the best performance by any professional player at a major event.

Navratilova holds the records for most singles titles (167) and for most doubles titles (177) in the open era. Her record as No.1 in singles (1982–86) is the most dominant in professional tennis. Over five consecutive seasons, she won 428 of 442 singles matches, averaging fewer than 3 losses per year to 87 wins, for a sustained winning percentage of 96.8%. She holds the best season win-loss record for the open era, 86-1 (98.9%) in 1983, and four of the top six open era seasons. She recorded the longest winning streak in the open era (74 consecutive matches) and three of the six longest winning streaks.

Martina on grass, Serena on harder surfaces, Steffi Graf is right up there with both.

Sure, she's a great: she has 7 GS titles. But Graf and Evert have 40 between them. It's no comparison there.
Yeah, I kind of forgot about Martina
trueblueinpw : 4/20/2017 2:12 pm : link
Not sure how that happened.
Also didn't give Chrissy Evert her due
trueblueinpw : 4/20/2017 2:24 pm : link
She was also terrific and an undisputed all time great. For what it's worth, which I think would be a lot, Evert wrote that Serena is the GOAT. She argues that the lack of any compitition is testiment to how great Serena is not to the lack of good female players. I think that's a sound argument by probably one of the most qualified people to make such an evaluation.

It's a tough call
jpennyva : 4/20/2017 2:33 pm : link
Martina Navratilova is the reason I started watching/playing tennis. She was fun to watch. She won her final Grand Slam mixed doubles title at the US Open in 2006 at the age of 49. Steffi was dominant, too. It would be hard to select a GOAT.

IIRC, Serena was "sick" during the Aussie. I guess now we know what from. It will be interesting to see if she plays in 2018.

If that were true, then why doesn't Serena have more like 30 or 40 titles? Navratilova lost 7 times in the Finals to Evert or Graf alone, plus more in the semis. And both she and Evert skipped the Austrailian for 6-7 years in their early careers because it wasn't seen with the weight it is today.
