NFT: Game 5: Rangers at Habs gamethread

redbeard : 4/20/2017 12:49 pm
Here we go boys. Team looked like fire last game so let's keep the mojo going.

Haven't heard of any lineup changes yet. I'm just gonna go ahead and bitch about the refs preemptively to piss of our resident Habs fan.

Also, fuck Steve Ott in his fucking ear. Let's fucking go, boys

I would not be surprised about anything, but don't let that make you feel like that makes much of a difference, I have been wanting Pirri in all series, he is a good power play guy, and this is something that the rangers really need, to get that power play clicking when these fucks play the way they are, especially in the first two periods when they are still making calls. But he has not played at all. AV is not the reason the Rangers would lose this series, that would be on the players. There is no reason the Rangers can not win this game and set themselves up for a series clincher on Saturday. Let's Go Rangers!!!!!!!

you guys can criticize the officiating as much as you want. It was wrong of me to vilify anyone for that.

For the Habs, Emelin in for Davidson. Puck moving good skating and passing defensively responsible defenseman out for poor decision making, poor skating, defensively irresponsible gritty defenseman.

As Julien a decision as there could be.

and I don't want to overrate Brandon Davidson, he's not a top 6 defenseman. and I guess Alexei Emelin is, but in this series, Davidson is a better fit, especially with the speed and size of the Rangers forwards.

It's like Julien and AV consult with one another on personnel decisions.
Doesn't seem to be any change to the lineup

Extras were: Raanta, Hellberg, Kampfer, Klein, Pirri, Puempel, Glass, Clendening. We know Holden would only get benched for Klein anyway, so no point in getting agitated about it.

Zuccarello is
pjcas18 : 4/20/2017 5:03 pm : link
far more skilled than Gallagher, but both are small players who hustle and make life hard on their opponents. I get why announcers compare them.

And I like Gallagher's game, I don't find him dirty, but he definitely plays with an edge. I'd hate him if my team had to play against him, but I'd recognize the value a player like him has regardless of the hate.

don't care who agrees.

Absolutely, and he has in the past slew footed a player on one occasion - though normally not intentional or blatant and it did not result in a suspension or a fine.

In fact as far as I know Gallagher has never been suspended by the league and not even fined by the league.

Kreider has been fined for his play, is he a dirty player?

The league reviews game film and suspends players for slew foots regularly. Andrew Shaw was suspended for a slew foot this season.

Slew foots are dangerous, so if it was both blatant and a slew foot as you say I would expect Gallagher to be suspended.

Was he?

Not that I have heard so my conclusion is

a) There was no blatant slew foot
b) you don't really know what a slew foot is
c) No suspension because...Montreal

I suspect probably both a and b to be true. but I suspect you will pick c.

Though the fact you're all still talking about how dirty Montreal is isn't a good look for hockey fans.

but don't let that stop you.

One hustles to create..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/20/2017 5:24 pm : link
scoring chances and to get control of the puck, while the other hustles to agitate the fuck out of people.

I'm pretty sure if a Ranger takes a skate out or intentionally trips a player behind the play that they wouldn't be looked at being a hard-nosed hustle monkey.
In fact Gallagher is exactly that
dpinzow : 4/20/2017 5:25 pm : link
An agitator who fans love when he is on their team and despise when he is going against your team. Esa Tikkanen was actually the best at that back in the day (loved Tikkanen, never really liked Avery except when he was messing with Brodeur, and don't like Gallagher but would appreciate him if he was on my team)

I don't think Gallagher does this:

When players hustle like Zuccarello or Gallagher they force the opponent to do things quicker than they want to do and actually draw penalties. But back to Gallagher....

Who is the most penalized player in the series?

I'll answer that for you Zuccarello.

How does Gallagher manage to escape the referees? Let me guess....because Montreal?

You guys are better fans than that.
Zucc..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/20/2017 5:41 pm : link
had a high-stick called and rightfully so and it was a 4 minute penalty.

He has 12 penalty minutes in 4 games, while he had 26 minutes all year! Something isn't adding up, especially with Gallagher pushing the boundaries more and only getting called for penalties in game 1.

Of course, when crosschecks and slashes are going un-whistled, but phantom stickwork on the boards is a penalty, I'm not really sure reason is going to play a decent part in discussing the ref performance.
Ok
pjcas18 : 4/20/2017 5:47 pm : link
well don't take my word for it. Here is an piece about Gallagher from last month.

Quote:
Gallagher Fails the Pest Test

Quote:
There are several common names found on any list of NHL agitators over the past five seasons. The likes of Brad Marchand, Antoine Roussel, Nazem Kadri, Corey Perry, and Radko Gudas come easily to mind. Specific to the Montreal Canadiens, Andrew Shaw seems to proudly wave the instigator banner. One other Habs player consistently appears on these lists as well, Brendan Gallagher. Heres one example of Gallagher being listed as an NHL agitator.

The feisty forward has earned a place in the hearts of Montreal fans and the heads of players around the league as a force to be reckoned with, but does he deserve a spot on any list of the NHLs most notorious pests?

Quote:
....With Brendan Gallagher, theres nothing in his game to eliminate. Hes hard to play against for the right reasons. He never stops working. He never stops skating. He never gives up positioning without a battle whether it be in the front of the net or in the corners. Like the well-known pests of past and present he can make you pay on the scoresheet and is generally a valuable and productive member his team. Unlike the true pests though, he doesnt even remotely cross the line in comparison. Hes never been suspended, and the only thing he was ever under scrutiny for was making comments regarding NHL refereeing, not for on ice antics.

Quote:
Playing Over the Edge

By nature of their role, pests are constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to legal and not so legal actions.

Perry was suspended for four games in 2013 for interference. Antoine Roussel was suspended for two games in 2014 for cross checking and fined that same year for a sucker punch. Radko Gudas has been suspended for a combined nine games over two suspensions. Brad Marchand has had more hearings with the Department of Player Safety than some pests have career games played. Hes been suspended multiple times over his career.

Gallagher hasnt even had an on-ice incident worthy of serious closer inspection. The most popular example used to demonstrate Gallaghers pest-worthy actions is this trip on big Boston defenceman Zdeno Chara from the 2014 post season....

Quote:
....ts a far cry from a check to the head, a slew foot, a spear, or any other annoyingly illegal play a true pest might use. Brendan Gallagher doesnt allow himself to get caught up in those traps. He plays with a control thats more infuriating than having to worry about a dirty shot because theres no known way to get him off his game. He has no apparent breaking point. This is the ultimate quality that puts him in the same category as great historical battlers like Johan Franzen and Ryan Smyth and separates him from the pests and the rats.

He was recently a topic of discussion after sliding into New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist, but he was sliding on his knees uncontrollably at the time and he didnt go looking for it.

into the equation because of a high stick penalty is nothing short of a diversion. He'll never have the reputation around the league that Gallagher or Shaw already cemented years ago by both his contemporary's and writers/reporters/broadcasters.

Keep up the good work though pj, they're the Canadians after all, a fine organEYEzation filled with a long legacy and championship banners. By the way, why would someone who lives in the northeast with plenty of other options choose them? Hell, there would have been more honor in jumping on the Whale wagon years ago. Or was it the Lafleur flow fluttering in the breeze as he danced down the wing that struck you in the sweet spot?
