Just like with autonomous cars, I expect that regulations
jcn56 : 4/20/2017 5:35 pm : link
and government approvals will be a much bigger barrier than the technology itself. Even if they had a working prototype they could mass produce tomorrow for a reasonable price, by the time it gets through all the government red tape, between impact analyses and the rules/regulations changes these things would dictate, we'll all be in adult diapers.
As Mr. Spock would say,

Insurance is going to be complicated. No insurance, no flying cars.
First step in the flying car phase

the Wright Brothers of flying cars.

After tens of thousand of deaths, the product will be refined until there are only thousands of deaths and then hundreds of deaths until finally gets it down to only 5% chance of dying every time you take off.

I can see it being fun if I was the only one in the air with one of those things and no other flying cars were allowed at the altitude I'm flying. But imagine if the air was full of them like every major highway and idiots texting while flying. Great idea - doesn't seem like it will be a very safe way to travel once there's one in every driveway. Maybe some kind of technology similar to self driving cars in which software controls the path to the destination and can sense other flying cars or there is a master air control system that controls all the vehicles in the air. But if it's a free-for-all with a lot of flying cars - it will be bedlam
They're talking about an autonomous taxi service

Bad news......watch that video closely

They show a vertical take off. And landing.

They show it flying in regular flight.

But they do not show a continuous transition from vertical takeoff to normal flight. Why not? Why would the edit the video that way?

I would never get in something where there's a 5% chance that I'd crash. That a ridiculously high percentage. After a year, I will have crashed about 6 times? No thanks.....
I would hope there's some regulation around these things.

You can't have them dropping out of the damn sky on stuff.

I wonder how long it takes to charge the batteries? 5 minutes flight and then 50 mins recharging?
They'd have to have an infrastructure in place
I Love Clams Casino : 4/21/2017 9:12 am : link
that would restrict the VTOL's flying space, altitude and flying lanes. Either that, or every VTOL would need to be linked somehow. The mess, just thinking about that is mind boggling. Like a huge 3 dimensional tangled gigantic ball of threads.

Capability may not yet be perfected, but it's already well-proven technology (Harrier, V-22, BA-609)
this thing could be good for remote rescue
idiotsavant : 4/21/2017 11:56 am : link
medical, wilderness, 3rd world, or epidemic situations
or, flip that around, taxi into and out of your wilderness experience
idiotsavant : 4/21/2017 11:57 am : link
obviously for other functions as well.
for example
idiotsavant : 4/21/2017 12:00 pm : link
a remove village thinks one person has ebola.

send it in, pick the person up, return to sequestered and washable area for treatment

ditto, injured climber on edge of difficult dangerous spot to land helicopter, with this you don't risk the crew
remove = remote

Nothing in the article indicates that. It specifically mentions a pilot.

I'll be impressed when they raise $120 million, like the guys who made the juicer that is 33% slower than just squeezing the juice by hand.

BIg difference between the Harrier Jet and this thing....

And they are claiming capabilities that they are deceptively hiding. I'll let you take the ride before me, OK?
