With all the shifting and strange defensive alignments I would prefer the official scorers to be more forgiving of players playing out of position. I would also prefer Bird to have been credited with a hit and 2 RBI

I'm on the other side of this, although I respect your view. But the game of baseball is about 150 years old now, give and take. The reason that the shift was never used back in the "old days" is that the hitters would have taken it as a gimme and just hit the other way. I'm not in favor of changing the rules in baseball any more than I am in football, soccer or basketball. If you don't like the shift, just hit the other way. Ballplayers of an earlier era would have had a field day with the shift, and there's no reason the current ones can't either.
