Linebackers and TE's.....Offensive Tackles...NO GO???

grizz299 : 4/22/2017 12:48 am

Just speculation by a casual fan...
But I wonder if TE and Line backer are not in good shape and if the cupboard isn't overflowing it's fairly well stocked.
I think Adams showed a lot coming from nowhere. Ellison is not only a good blocker and versatile (a hybrid fullback) but I think he's a very underrated and capable receiver able to run a seam and exploit a defense that's figures to be stretched as thin as a rubber band holding up a ten lb. weight. I'm not sure Tye makes this roster.
Point? I'm not sure that there's a glaring need for a TE this year.
Ditto with our linebackers. Kennard and Robinson were healthy last year, they figure to profit from that experience and enjoy a year of exponential growth. There's underrated talent between those two, strength, speed and agility. Goodson has been working hard, I think he's the answer on first down and more. Cassillas and Thomas figure to be more than just Jags (if only barely) so I see talent, experience and depth.
In a draft that's deep I think we'll see a fine player at 23 - only I don't think it's at our position of greatest need. So I don't think it's going to be offensive tackle (though Lamp, if available, is a possiblility and might even free Pugh to go back to tackle in an emergency).
Hankins' loss provides need and the hours logged by Vernon and JPP provide need too - all the dollars tied up in DE's notwithstanding. DT's don't usually interest Jerry enough to splurge a first rounder on and this years draft might indicate real talent at the position in round two.
Conclusion: The BPA is likely to be on the defensive line and I think that will provide a confluence where need joins talent. Therefore........and acknowledging that I don't know a lot, I predict a DE or Lamp.
Hell, not knowing much has never stopped anyone here from pontificating has it?
grizz...

...I think you make several solid points leading to the conclusion about DE or Lamp.

I'm just going on a hunch when I say that -- even though our secondary is pretty well set -- this Draft is absolutely loaded with secondary talent at both CB and Safety.

L.O.A.D.E.D.

Maybe a very, very good secondary player drifts down to us at 23 and Jerry Reese can't resist.

Another thought (guess) that goes against your well-reasoned thread-starter... and that's Cam Robinson, OT out of Alabama. If he slides to 23, I'm certainly not complaining about filling a desperate, desperate need with this big guy who is pretty damn athletic. I know he's dinged and has has been arrested, but IMO he will turn out to be a much better Pro than our current Left Tackle.
Good points

And completely agree on the TE and Ellison. I've been saying on a couple threads that a TE makes little sense especially in the first and especially a project like Njoku. Much rather DL OL. Also, I do see what your saying about the LB, but I still think we are missing the one playmaker there. It would be nice to slide an athletic guy behind that line and bring this defense to another level. I still think the biggest needs are DL OL and DB depth.
LB is not stacked

Last year of contract for Kennard, Cassilas and Robinson. We have to think beyond this year when we talk draft. TE I see you point because we just signed Ellison and we have Adams for a couple more years and TYe for 1.
Lamp is absolutely NOT the answer
Chris L. : 4/22/2017 8:47 am : link
this team has too many tackles who may end up having to play guard because they can't cut it at tackle (Flowers, Fluker, Hart). If we go OL (which we shouldn't) it must be a tackle. Lamp has 32 inch arms...sound like anyone you know? I don't need another projected tackle who turns into a guard drafted in the first round.
There really is no concensus for Giants fans this year.

Not even consensus on the team's top needs.

So much remote throwing that I'm buying Best Buy stock.
the fact that the Giants are stocked at a position is irrelevant

The Giants were stocked at DE when they drafted JPP

The Giants are going to draft an impact player in the first round - it may very well be a lineman - but I can see them drafting a LB or a TE if one they really like drops to them and is ranked high on their board - I can see them going CB too - it's really gonna depend on how the board falls -- but i'm sceptical that an Olineman with value will fall to them -- very sceptical -- there are only a couple of them available and they are not the best of options this year -- the ones that are even remotely good will have been snapped up because the Giants are not the only team that needs Olinemen

Yep... this is a Draft where the Giants could go in many different directions, and it may not be an obvious need at 23. Come later rounds, "need" will definitely come into focus. But Round 1? Gonna be a guessing game.

Do you really believe that there isn't a consensus that the team's top need is OT? We can argue over whether or not there is talent in the draft to fill that need, but I would think we can all agree that OT is our greatest need by a wide fucking margin.
Btw

Hard to tell what the Giants think of Lamp, Bolles, and Ramczyk, but history tells us that the Giants love-love-love Cam Robinson. Just saying....

I really hope they don't draft Robinson...just to piss you off.
At the very least, the uncertainty is good/welcomed.

The talk is literally all over the place this year regarding our first pick. That's good. Unlike last year where everyone on Earth knew Reese had a hard on for both Conklin and Floyd.

Pugh is very likely to be e too expensive. Jerry is no long term answer and is easily cutable. Flowers who knows? Fluker is on a one year deal. If Lamp is a stud. Grab him

How can we expend yet another first round draft pick on the O-Line and still not fix the problem at tackle? If Lamp is not a sure fire tackle (and he isn't) the only first round possibility on the OL is an OT.
Pretty sure Robinson will be picked
mrvax : 4/22/2017 11:56 am : link
a few slots ahead of #23. My crystal ball says Flowers will improve and Fluker will be solid at RT.

It also says Pugh will sign elsewhere in 2018 for mega-bucks. So, if the Giants value Lamp as much as Dave Te does, he could end up being the pick. Lamp is pretty versatile and would make the loss of Pugh of less impact.

If Lamp is there at #23, he's my guess for the pick.
