The Annual "Who Are Your Guys?" Thread

Anakim : 4/22/2017 2:34 pm
You know how it works. Who are the guys you would bang the table for. Who are your favorite prospects? Who are the guys you want on the Giants (either via drafting or via signing)? Who are the guys you want to be linked to for all eternity?Choose wisely because you may end up like me and be linked to Ramses Barden and James Hardy. And don't pick only first round players. That's boring.

Mine:

RB Jamaal Williams of BYU
RB Kareem Hunt of Toledo
RB Chris Carson of Oklahoma State
RB Samaje Perine of Oklahoma

WR Corey Davis of Western Michigan

LT Ryan Ramczyk of Wisconsin

DE Deatrich Wise Jr. of Arkansas
DE/OLB Noble Nwachukwu of West Virginia (not for the Giants)
DE Tanoh Kpassagnon of Villanova

LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin of Tennessee

FS Marcus Williams of Utah

My mock:

1) LT Ryan Ramczyk of Wisconsin or WR Corey Davis of Western Michigan
2) FS Marcus Williams of Utah or FS Desmond King of Iowa
3) DT Montravius Adams of Auburn
4) RB Jamaal Williams of BYU
5) DE Deatrich Wise Jr. of Arkansas

I am primarily obsessed with:

1 - the G-C-G getting more powerful, with a much stronger base, for an almost unique in the league combo (for many reasons as stated prior, macball, elis habits, league trends, roster condition)

2 - obsessed with taking additional and full advantage of a very unusual opportunity presented by a nearly complete two way DL, having 3 out of 4 parts and not wanting an 'average piece' but to go for greatness while its within reach. add to the current DL cost an affordable high drafted rookie.

3. Pieces that augment run blocking, TE's of a type, fullbacks, even WRs.

and that's it, fill in your own blanks.

1 - Jeremy McNichols - RB - Boise State
BlackburnBalledOut : 4/22/2017 4:02 pm : link
This kid is an all around back. does it all, runs north, protects the qb, spilts out wide. He will be available on day 3. he averaged 1,523 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2 years as a starter. boise state has produced a few natable RBs in the last few years in doug martin and jay ajayi

Here are his notes from CBS Sports Draft Profile

STRENGTHS: Short but possesses a powerful, compact frame with well-built arms and a thick lower half that testifies to his work in the weight room. McNichols shows good initial quickness to press the line and can dart through openings when there. He tip-taps his way through traffic nicely, showing very good footwork to dance past would-be tacklers attempting to take out his legs. He possesses good vision and the burst to take advantage of cut-back lanes, as well as an effective stop-start move to elude and stiff-arm to knock away defenders. McNichols runs with good forward lean to take on would-be tacklers, spinning and keeping his legs churning to break tackles to maximize his runs. He is highly experienced as a pass-blocker, showing awareness and courage to take on hard-charging defenders. While lacking elite size for this role, McNichols anchors well to absorb and shows good quickness and accuracy to strike at the legs of oncoming defenders on cut blocks. McNichols is a reliable pass catcher, showing the ability to extend and pluck outside of his frame without slowing down. He has experience splitting out wide as a receiver, showing good body control and quickness to create separation.

WEAKNESSES: McNichols lacks the size and speed to excite scouts. He is more quick than fast, lacking the second gear to pull away from defenders. He can get impatient as an interior runner, opting to bounce it outside but does not possess the instant acceleration to leave defenders in his wake. He does not consistently wrap both arms around the ball while in traffic. While alert in pass protection, McNichols can become too reliant on cut-blocks to slow defenders.

2 - Derek Rivers -DE Youngstown State
BlackburnBalledOut : 4/22/2017 4:06 pm : link
Another guy who should be available on day 3, Rivers is smart and versatile. Team Captain. All time sack leader at Youngstown St. He played DE in the 4-3 defense they ran but has the ability to stand up. 4.6 40 time....19.5 tackles for loss and 15 sacks in 2016...

STRENGTHS: Flexible athlete with natural bend to dip around the corner. Easy burst off the edge. Extends with a quick punch to engage and create spacing while maintaining his balance and low pad level. Uses his hands well to fend off counter jabs, showing various snatch and rip techniques. Flashes the ability to convert speed to power in his pass rush. Moves well laterally to sidestep blockers. Alert run defender to keep contain and string plays outside. Strong hands/wrists to finish tackles. Has worked hard to max out his frame. Senior captain and productive three-year starter with 56.5 tackles for loss in 37 career starts - his 41.0 career sacks is best all-time in YSU and MVFC history.

WEAKNESSES: Slightly undersized frame and lacks ideal length. Doesn't have the upper body power to press blockers off his frame and can be engulfed by wide-based blockers. Tends to get lost on inside runs and can be sealed from lanes. Struggles to anchor vs. power and can be taken out of the play. Requires a half-second to reset his eyes vs. the run when required to start/stop. Initial burst isn't an issue, but often late off the snap and needs to improve his anticipation. Room to expand his pass rush moves to keep blockers guessing. Lacks ideal experience against top competition - only three career starts vs. FBS competition (six tackles, two sacks).
3 - Damontae Kazee CB San Diego State
BlackburnBalledOut : 4/22/2017 4:11 pm : link
I watched som SD games bc i was a fan on their RB Donnell Pumphrey and this kid stood out, every time. Thin but one hell of a tackler and is not afraid of contact. Real center fielder type corner, keeps an eye on the qb while in coverage. again, real good tackler, shows form that has seemingly been forgotten in todays game ( wraps the ball carrier)

STRENGTHS: Sports a compact, athletic build showing the light feet, balance and loose hips to easily change direction. Confident in press man coverage, showing a low, tight backpedal and smooth turning motion. Good route anticipation and understands angles, keep his frame between the receiver and the quarterback.
Peeks back toward the quarterback and isn't afraid to drop his primary coverage duties to break quickly back to the ball, showing impressive field vision.

Tracks the ball well, exhibiting the body control and concentration to make difficult over-the-shoulder grabs. Excellent hand-eye coordination to punch at the ball (six forced fumbles over his career) and showed exciting development as an interceptor in 2015, turning eight of his career-high 15 passes breakups into interceptions after recording just one in 13 opportunities in 2014.

Competitive open-field tackler, who aggressively slithers his way past would-be blockers to get into the action. Not an imposing hitter but is a sure tackler who wraps his arms for the secure stop.

WEAKNESSES: A classic gambler who can be fooled with double-moves and savvy quarterbacks looking the other way. Lacks the swift acceleration to recover if caught flat-footed and may struggle to keep up with NFL receivers on longer routes. More pesky than powerful as a tackler and comes with obvious size limitations.

IN OUR VIEW: Kazee lacks ideal size and speed for the outside, but he's athletic enough to play man coverage and possesses the awareness, downhill closing speed and competitiveness as an open-field tackling ability to project well inside as a nickel corner. His knack for making his own big plays (15 turnovers caused over his career) is certainly intriguing as well.
4 - Chad Kelly - QB Ole Miss
BlackburnBalledOut : 4/22/2017 4:22 pm : link
ONLY IF HE IS AVAILABLE IN ROUNDS 6 OR 7.

i get the concern with this kid. has some off the filed nonsense and has run into some injury lately. I would gladly risk a late rounder for him his upside is very promising. Hes not afraid to take his shots and give his WR a chance to make a play (sound familiar?) Has run into trouble but he is still a kid....i think a year redshirting as the QB3 and watching how eli does it, not to mention heal up on his acl, would really benefit him. I could be wrong, I thought Aaron Murray was a great prospect coming out too, id still like to see him get a shot, somewhere.

Top-shelf arm strength and spins a pretty ball with unforced velocity. Adequate height with a well-built frame. Quick feet to move in the pocket and find better throwing platforms. Functional athleticism to extend plays and pick up chunk yards (almost 1,000 rushing yards over 22 career collegiate starts). Flashes impressive anticipation to deliver before receivers are out of their breaks - will give his receivers a chance to make plays. Experienced throwing the full route tree and making whole field reads. Very confident thrower and not shy about letting it loose. Willing learner and work ethic isn't a concern. Physically and mentally. Highly productive in the SEC (14-8 record career win-loss record), leaving Ole Miss No. 3 on the all-time passing yards list (6,856). NFL bloodlines as the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, who played 11 seasons for the Buffalo Bills.

WEAKNESSES: Frenetic footwork and weight distribution in his release, relying on his arm. Stubborn decision-maker and has the bad habit of pre-determining his throws, staring down targets and not making the correct post-snap reads. Excessively confident in his arm strength and too willing to force passes into heavy coverage. Hot/cold pocket awareness, leading to panic moments. Has torn the ACL in his right knee twice, first while at Clemson during the spring game (April 2013) and then as a senior at Ole Miss (Nov. 2016) - also underwent sports hernia surgery (April 2016) prior to his senior year. Diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder) and the verbiage was made easier in the Ole Miss offense to accommodate, something that could be a "challenge" with a NFL playbook, according to Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze. History of run-ins with coaches, which led to several suspensions in high school and his dismissal from Clemson. Laundry list of off-field red flags that will concern NFL teams about his maturity and decision-making -- was arrested shortly after committing to Ole Miss (Dec. 2014) where he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after he was kicked out of a Buffalo nightclub and told police: "I'm going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place" while resisting arrest. A few incidents popped up during his senior season, including while at a high school game during the Ole Miss off-weekend (Oct. 2016) where he had to be restrained from storming the field after an on-field incident involving his younger brother. A photo also surfaced (Nov. 2016) of him allegedly rolling a marijuana blunt with friends, but there hasn't been confirmation of how old the picture is.

lol, "a marijuana blunt with his friends"

after reading the weaknes part i may have lost a few points but im still pounding the table to take this kid late.

He was on my short list at one point and I wouldn't hate the pick. I also wouldn't worry about what the beat reporters are saying. It seemed like there was a rush order last week from Big Blue headquarters to put the word out that they weren't interested in Njoku and OL...which makes me think it's either gonna be Njoku or OL.

Hold on just a gosh darn second! Aren't you the one who is always saying it has to be "clean" prospect? No smudges whatsoever!
Quote:
(Reddick) had off-campus fight in 2015 and was able to avoid a trial by agreeing to be placed in a diversionary program.
Doesn't that disqualify him in your book? From my perspective all it means is that he needs to be questioned on it during the interview process and then I leave it up to Reese and company to determine if his answers are satisfactory, but I was under the impression that that simply isn't good enough for you. Just the fact that there was an incident that didn't "magically" happen (I think that was the word you used) shows bad judgment on the part of a prospect. Or perhaps you weren't aware that Reddick isn't a "clean" prospect.

This kid would excel here.
Thrill Ride with some Thrill Guys
One Man Thrill Ride : 4/24/2017 5:00 pm : link
Keep this list short and sweet.

OJ Howard is quite obviously the pick if he's there.

Add Hassan Reddick to the Thrill Riders, filed under Wishful Thinking. Sean Thrilliam Scott suspect he might actually go before OJ, comfortably in the top-15 perhaps. Bias: he might be my biological son.

Thrill would be thrilled with Jarrad Davis.

Garrett Bolles appears to be the only OL on the NYG rd1 watch list. Thrill has his doubts if this 25-year old has the capacity to get stronger and anchor against fully-grown apex pass rushers, but acknowledges that execs across the league are impressed with what he put on tape. Bolles also aced the Wonderlic and scored a 9 -- almost double digits, not bad.

Adoree Jackson - have to adoree an athlete who can impact on all four downs. Ranaan is starting to ring this bell, and rightfully so.

Another "short" DB who Thrill believes will be a very good, versatile player (altho admittedly not likely to be with NYG): Baker from Wash.

Fav size/speed corner? Q.Wilson, Florida.

Speaking of measureables, he might now be a 1st rd player, just like another safety from his program in Byron Jones, but this Obi "Wan Kenobi" Melifonwu would be a fun pick just to say we have an actual living, breathing 100th percentile NFL athlete. Like having a pet anaconda that's 50ft long.

Two "Thrill Ride Approved" factor backs ::Merrill Hodge voice::
- (Earlier) Mixon has the athletic talent to be the protyptyoe 'multiple' RB in 2017 for the team brazen enough to handle the PR - L.Bell type ability.
- (Later) Brian Hill from Wyoming

Derek Rivers (Youngstown St) is one of the very few non-obvious Edge players with the athletic profile to produce in the league. Literature on Force Players offers some compelling insight. Curious to see how the small school informs his draft position; this is name worth writing down.

Jeremy Sprinkle is a rock solid two-way TE from Arkansas, and we wanted his predecessor Hunter Henry in the 2nd last year. Kittle of Iowa would be a good fit for us schematically as a move TE - a rich man's, more appropriately sized Will Tye, depending on if the team envisions Rhett 'The Hitman' Ellison in a traditional in-line role.

Of all the OL in the mix for Day 1 and Day 2, Thrill likes this Taylor Moton from Western. Motown Moton.

Not for nothin, this QB class remains confusing and polarizing. Thrill Dill Holyfield will happily ride with Watson.

Last remark. With a smart DC, Jabrill Peppers will be a core player and everydown presence. Not hearing any of the 'tweener talk. The One Man Jabrill Ride.
