NFT: Yankees-Pirates 4/22 late afternoon special

mfsd : 4/22/2017 6:31 pm
Picked this one up midstream, 5-5 in the 7th inning stretch. Pineda was down 3-0 after a so-so 5 IP...Yanks came roaring back on a 3 run HR by Castro and a 2 run double by Torreyes...then Holder gave 2 runs back with 2 outs to let the Pirates tie it back up. Battle of the bullpens is on.

Judge crushed a double to center in the middle of the 5 run rally...Romine and Torreyes with 2 hits apiece

Holy shit

Including Stanton, that's something else (Stanton plays there at least one series a season in the NL)
457 for Judge.

And Sanchez to come back soon and rake.

Hopefully Didi comes back strong and even better then last season.

So many big things...

Once this team gets starting pitching the 5-10 year championship window clock starts.
Judge being a plus defensive RF is huge too
DennyInDenville : 4/22/2017 7:33 pm : link
He's not just some big slouch out there. He can defend the position, and defend it well.
Yankees tied for 2nd in come from behind victories.
Dave in Hoboken : 4/22/2017 7:34 pm : link
They have 6 and are only behind Houston who has 7. Man, I can't wait for Didi and Gary to return.

Maybe they already have a little pitching in Severino. He's been fantastic to start the season. Knock on wood that his good pitching form continues
Didi/Sanchez
GruningsOnTheHill : 4/22/2017 8:01 pm : link

With the way Torreyes & Aussie Romine have been playing, the team hasn't really missed either of these two starters.

For the first time in years, they aren't "weak" at any position. Of course there will be ebbs and flows over the course of 160 games, but I'm excited for the future. I think the Yankees are set up for many years.

I would like to see Hicks get more playing time.

So with the way Harper has started the year
jgambrosio : 4/23/2017 12:05 am : link
Is there still a debate between Machado and Harper? And if you say Harper, do we trade Frazier for pitching? I assume Rutherford sticks in that scenario. Still a logjam with judge, ells and gardy, does the last go too? Or do we just stand pat and save some cash?
Harper AND Machado
DennyInDenville : 4/23/2017 12:09 am : link
Buyout Ells at that point

Gardy will be off the books

Trade some extra young talent for starting pitching
I watched Reggie as a young kid, but I don't remember him

Thus, Judge has the most raw power I've ever seen on the Yankees. Even more than ARod.
Why would you want Harper?
section125 : 4/23/2017 10:21 am : link
Machado, yes. Not a Harper fan. The Yanks can grow their own outfield talent, without a $30 mill per year rock around their necks.
With Judge in RF, where do you put Harper? Can Judge play LF?

Harper has played all 3 of positions. And he would destroy Yankee Stadium. He's a phenomenal player. Sure, the money will be crazy but he's still incredibly young and would be a huge addition to this lineup. The Yankees will have tons of money to spend so I'm not sure why anyone even cares about the money
Well, pitching is critical for a winning team, so I'd want to save
yatqb : 4/23/2017 10:52 am : link
some money for a great starter or two (if those even reach FA any more).

Because big contracts handcuffed this team for the past half a decade. A-Rod flamed out at the end(the least), CC flamed out, Ells never really panned, Teix flamed out. Big, long expensive contracts buy a few years and then become a burden. We keep hearing about players destroying Yankee Stadium. More likely Yankee Stadium destroys the player. A-Rod was the one guy who thrived and he was a righty.

Not sure I'd agree with your stance...

1. Large contracts to MVP caliber players that are in their mid 20's don't hamstring a franchise, specifically the Yankees. Large contracts to average-good players do.

2. Bryce Harper is a legit star who has 10 years of prime left.

3. Signing Bryce Harper is like a rock around your neck....a diamond.

4. When the Yankees signed Teix and Arod, they were both already into their 30's(31 and 32 respectively), so yeah, they flamed out.
Just to acurately compare:
Keith : 4/23/2017 11:56 am : link
Harper = 25 years old when he signs his massive contract.
Arod = 32 years old.
Teix = 31 years old.
Sabathia - 28 years old(and a pitcher so not a good comparison)
Ellsbury = (are you really comparing Ellsbury to Harper???)

Geezus, don't try too hard. Ells was an example of a bad long term contract(that everybody knew was a klunker). A-Rod and Teix at least started out very good and both got hurt to effectively kill their game. Yes CC counts because of the long term high $$ contract.
Harper would be fine for 5 or 6 years, maybe 7. But not for the 10 years / $30 mill he'll command. I just do not like long term high end contracts. Burned too many times. Cano looks like the one contract that may have been worthy, but 10 years....it only takes one small injury.
Yes, there is a risk to signing someone
Keith : 4/23/2017 1:02 pm : link
to a long term deal. However, when you measure risk vs reward and understand the Yankees financial advantage which limits the risk, it's a risk worth taking. Even Cano was 31 when he got 10 years. If Harper got 10 years, it would be his age 25-35 seasons. He's a perennial MVP caliber player. Harper, Sanchez, Judge, Bird.....insane.

Exactly. And aside from Harpers age, the other huge difference is that all of the players section keeps referring to were under these huge contracts at the same time. Tex, CC, ARod, Ells, all of them, because the Yankees had no farm system to speak of. Harper will be 25, much different than all of those guys. Would I want them to go crazy and sign a bunch of aging veterans to contracts like that? Hell no. But signing Harper at 25 and filling in around him with young, cheap studs? Absolutely
