NFT: Going to my first baseball game - advice needed

El Pollo Diablo : 4/23/2017 1:34 pm
Hey fellow BBIers! As you can see I'm a long time lurker from europe. I'm going to be in NY in August and want to go to my first baseball game. I'm not a huge fan per se, but experiencing a ballgame is something I definitely want to do someday.

I have the option to go to either a Yankees or Mets game. What do you guys think is better in terms of fan/stadium experience?
Considering i don't want to spend a fortune on the tickets, any advice for seating and where to get tickets from, would also be very much appreciated.
Bring a glove. You aren't a man unless you wear a glove at a game.

Just kidding. I am a Yankees fan but I think Citifield has a nice stadium for a game. Depending on where you are it is probably easier to get to and the parking is way better.
When the Yankees are home, the Mets are on the road
Ira : 4/23/2017 1:45 pm : link
and vice versa. So your choice of team depends on when you want to go.
Haven't been to Citi in a while
giantsfan44ab : 4/23/2017 1:48 pm : link
but the garlic fries at Yankee stadium are enough of a reason to go there.
Thanks for the answers so far, guys!
El Pollo Diablo : 4/23/2017 1:54 pm : link
Didn't know about one team playing at home and the other on the road. But i already looked at the dates that I could see a game, and it would be either the Tigers at the Yankees, or the Marlins/Yankees at the Mets a couple of weeks later.
Yankee Stadium
DennyInDenville : 4/23/2017 1:55 pm : link
Better location
Better Food arguably (both have amazing food)
Don't have to watch Pitchers hit, you get to see a DH instead
Better atmosphere and more full
Parking is a nice situation also

Plus its the New York Yankees.
If there's no need to buy tickets in advance
Milton : 4/23/2017 1:58 pm : link
I would wait until it gets closer to the date of your trip. The fun of the game can be dependent on who is in contention, who is pitching, and who they are playing. If you're only staying a week, it's possible that one of them could be on the road the whole time.
p.s.--That being said, the Yankees are the proper choice if you are only going to see one game in your lifetime. Do you want to tell your grandchildren you once saw a Yankees game live or you once saw a Mets game live?
But the teams playing don't really matter to me
El Pollo Diablo : 4/23/2017 2:01 pm : link
my question was more about what place is better to have a nice time at the game.
I'm also not sure about the seating. As I said, I don't want to spend too much for the tickets. I know that the bleachers are by far the cheapest seats, but that seems a little far away from the game action.

Also Yankee stadium looks pretty huge, so I'm not sure what the view is like from the upper level sections.
Just checked the schedule
Milton : 4/23/2017 2:02 pm : link
If you're booking in advance, the best games are probably:
Red Sox at Yankees 8/11-8/13 (three games)
Mets at Yankees 8/14-8/15 (two games)
Yankees at Mets 8/16-8/17 (two games)
I haven't been to the new
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/23/2017 2:02 pm : link
Yankees Stadium, but I went to Citi two summers ago & loved it. I think they modeled it on the old Ebbets Field.

These are all games that will likely sell out if they haven't already.

That's true. I'm favoring the Yankees a little bit just for that reason ;-)

The teams which are playing will impact the experience. You want to go to a game that has excitement to it. Red Sox-Yankees and Mets-Yankees are rivalry games that are sure to be exciting no matter their records at the time.
I already checked which games I could go and see
El Pollo Diablo : 4/23/2017 2:10 pm : link
It's only the following couple of games. I'm out of town for the remaining time that I'm in the US.

Tigers at Yankees 07/31/17
Tigers at Yankees 08/01/17
Yankees at Mets 08/17/17
Marlins at Mets 08/18/17

True, but my options are limited anyways. I would go and see Red Sox-Yankees in a heartbeat if it was possible.
If you get Yankees at Mets tickets that's the one!
Milton : 4/23/2017 2:16 pm : link
Otherwise I'd go with Tigers-Yankees, but I'm a Yankees fan.
Yankee fan here
UConn4523 : 4/23/2017 2:33 pm : link
but Citi is the nicer ballpark, IMO, especially if you have kids. If the old stadium still existed that would be a no brainier but Citi will be cheaper and there's more room to walk around while also watching the game.

Do the Yankees at Mets. There will always be tickets available for sale on stubhub. There is really no BAD seats in Citifield.
Here is a local CBS article comparing the two
steve in ky : 4/23/2017 3:59 pm : link
My two cents try and read about each stadium and choose which one will you believe will offer you the most enjoyable experience.

Since you aren't a fan of any one team forget about being able to say "I saw this team or that one", but instead simply try and most enjoy attending your first major league game.

Good luck
TALE OF THE TAPE Tale Of The Tape: Citi Field Vs. Yankee Stadium - ( New Window )
If you're coming to New York you have to see the Yankees.
Joey from GlenCove : 4/23/2017 6:55 pm : link
Both great stadiums but it's the Yankees.

If I went to Austria I'd go to Musikverein not The Konzerthaus.

Both probably great. But one is just more famous.

Hats off to you, I did not expect anyone to know about the Musikverein on this thread ;-)
But if you want to make that comparison, both the Konzerthaus and Musikverein offer amazing classical concerts. So maybe it's more about the game that needs to be exciting than the stadium it's played in, because both places seem to be nice.

Anyways, thanks for the help guys!
Take a pillow.
.
I'm a Yankee fan, but Citi is the nicer stadium.

Nicer looking, better concessions. If you're staying in Manhattan though, Yankee is more convenient. In terms of tickets, that's a bit subjective - I'm perfectly happy in the upper deck between the bases, which for any non-premium game (which would apply to either the Tigers or Marlins series you mentioned) can be had very inexpensively on stubhub (<$25). But many prefer better seats than that, and especially if this is your first game, you might want to spend more. Either way, I'd recommend just looking at stubhub to get a sense of prices and keeping an eye on it. There's no particular reason to buy now - the secondary market for both teams will have plenty of tickets right up until gameday.

Was going to say this as well about travel. Getting to YS from midtown (Grand Central) couldn't be easier. Metro North vs. the subway is no comparison.
Why the hell would anyone

Not anymore. They used to be when they tossed them fresh. Now, they are usually soggy (although they do taste good).
I'm a Yankee fan

and I am not enamored with the fan experience at Yankee Stadium. I have yet to go to CitiField, but I would love to. By most accounts that I've read, it is a nicer stadium with better food and a better fan experience.
