King MMQB: 2017 NFL Draft: What Will Cleveland Do With Top Pick?
Myles Garrett ... Mitch Trubisky ... It’s all on the table for the Browns with the No. 1 selection only days away. Here are the latest first-round notes from Mike Mayock, a mock draft tease, a reality check reminder and more
"• I won’t be surprised if the Giants (seeking a tackle), scheduled to pick 23rd, or the Texans (seeking a quarterback), scheduled to pick 25th, move up into the teens. Baltimore (16) and Tennessee (18) would be happy to move down."

"• Yes, the Giants got a slightly raw deal, facing four teams coming off byes. But going this deep on a schedule—analyzing, for instance, that the Giants’ opponents will be, on average, the most-rested in the league entering their games against the Giants—is a sign that too many people have too much time on their hands to analyze truly insignificant things.
• Yes, it’s odd that the Giants will open at Dallas, after opening there in 2013, 2015 and 2016. That’s four out of five years opening at Jerryworld, and three in a row. Odd, but nothing else."

And this Peter King comment is even more moronic:

"Yes, it’s odd that the Giants will open at Dallas, after opening there in 2013, 2015 and 2016. That’s four out of five years opening at Jerryworld, and three in a row. Odd, but nothing else."

The NFL purposely chose to open the season with a Giants v. Cowboys matchup 4 out of the last 5 years, no doubt for TV ratings. King makes it sound like the names were drawn out of a hat for 5 years and 4 times it cam up Giants v. Cowboys.

They have us taking "no block - hybrid RB" Njuki in the 1st -
then taking "woman beater" Brantley in the second - then Holden 3rd.

King is way off on that

There is no way the Giants trade up for one of these OTs. Especially since there is a good chance they will all (or most) be available when the Giants pick.
Proof
lugnut : 4/24/2017 8:43 am : link
that King is an idiot. He wouldn't be surprised if Giants traded up in the first round to take an OL? Really? He wouldn't be surprised if the giants -- who NEVER trade up in the first round -- traded up in the first round? And did it to get at an OL class universally regarded as crap? Just...Jesus.

Dont understand your point at all. If it was a deep OT class would you want Reese to trade up for one??

If our biggest need is tackle.. And NYG thinks there are only one or two good ones.. Why would it be stupid to move up and get one??

Because you're possibly passing up on two better players to trade up for a potentially worse player.

yep, hence my comment "and Peter King sucks more by the week. NFL/Goodell butt boy."

Agreed. As far as I can tell any LT projected for Round 1 is a 'probable' or possibly 'solid'. You don't wreck your draft for that.

I would throw every remote in the house!!

it just makes no sense whatsoever to a) use your first round pick in this draft and b) another pick to move up. The only way this would make sense is that the Giants have a far superior grade on an OT than everything we've read from anyone.

It just would be nuts to do so. Further, if we feel that low a confidence in Flowers that you would do this, put simply, waiting for the draft to close this hole is foolish on its own merit.

We are better off just trading our #1 draft pick, or even a #1 draft pick and a pick in next year's draft (and even a player) to go out and getting a starting caliber LT from someone else. Yes, you need to find a trading partner, of course. But there would be someone who is a known commodity for that level of return.

Wow, Peter King got paid to thing / type that?

I agree, trading up for an OL in this draft would be a remote thrower.

Stay put and take BPA in a need position (the Giants still have many) or maybe the Giants get lucky and a QB or two are still available and someone will give us more than fair value to trade down.

No trade ups please.
Look I don't want a trade up either,
SirYesSir : 4/24/2017 11:33 am : link
but the fact it's a weak OT class enhances, not reduces, the need to do so.

If you think there's only 1 or 2 OT's worth a crap in the whole draft, and you really want/need one, then moving up is a sound decision.

Again, I hope they don't, but the quality of the OT group might be pushing them if they think getting one is critical

Actually it would be a pretty smart thing to do in an OL weak draft if you had an OL ranked in the top ten on your board who had slipped into the 18-21 range. If you don't pull the trigger on a trade up, who knows if you'll get another shot at one (i.e., there could be a run on them between picks 23 and 55).

On the other hand, with the draft deep at ER, DB, and TE, you can expect that there will still be good ones to choose from come Day 2. So why would you trade up for any of those positions? You would only trade up if you had a need at a position that is weak in available prospects. That's how the law of supply and demand works.

p.s.--Peter King isn't suggesting that the Giants will trade up for a shitty prospect just because they have a need at the position, he's suggesting the Giants will trade up for the last excellent prospect at a position of need.

Some scheduling..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/24/2017 11:37 am : link
situations are "quirks". The Giants continually playing in Dallas to open the year is neither a quirk or unplanned. It is a deliberate attempt to grab early ratings.

How a media guy like King can't see that is astonishing.

Peter King: Did you know that the Patriots play back-to-back games in altitude, at Denver and against the Raiders in Mexico City?

Joe fan: Yeah. And it's crazy that the Giants play 4 teams coming off their bye this year.

Peter King: Wow, dude, you have way too much time on your hands going so deep into the schedule for something that insignificant.

that King is an idiot. He wouldn't be surprised if Giants traded up in the first round to take an OL? Really? He wouldn't be surprised if the giants -- who NEVER trade up in the first round -- traded up in the first round?
The Giants always explore trade up scenarios and have made offers to trade up several times, but there offers were rejected. What the Giants never do is offer their 2nd round pick in a trade up, but for the right player in the right circumstances, they will offer their 3rd or 4th round pick (i.e., they gave up their 4th round pick to move up one spot in 2002).

And did it to get at an OL class universally regarded as crap? Just...Jesus.
It's not regarded as crap, it's regarded as shallow. Which is precisely the situation in which you would mostly likely consider trading up for a player you love at that position. As I said in the above comment, that's how it works with the law of supply and demand. And nobody is suggesting the Giants should trade up for a crappy player.
Here's a hypothetical for you...
Milton : 4/24/2017 11:48 am : link
The Giants have just given up their 4th round pick to move up two spots. In the press conference to follow does Reese say...
a) Robinson was ranked in the 35-40 range on our board but we were desperate for OL help so we did what we had to do.
b) We had Robinson ranked in the 10-15 range on our board and we were worried that Miami would grab him or that Seattle would trade up for him. Giving up the 140th pick in the draft was an easy decision to ensure that we got our man and we are all very happy and excited to see him at competition along the OL.

@Milton, you know for sure that B is precisely what Reese will say. "He was top 15 on our board. Too much value to pass up" etc etc If we are that desperate for OL help in their view (which is contrary to their actions), I just don't see our trading up or drafting rd 1 in this draft is solving it. Worse, if they feel a rookie is needed to come in, then I am even more worried about the OL than I was already. :)

Whoever they draft in the 1st round will be a rookie and there's always the hope that the player they take with their first round pick can contribute right away. It was the 2007 rookie class that paved the way to a Super Bowl victory.

But your point is more about the perception that it would be out of desperation, not value. I don't think they will do anything out of desperation. They will do what their draft board to tells them to do (with an eye towards how it will effect their depth chart). In other words, they are more likely to trade up for a player they value at a position where they lack depth and the draft pool is shallow than they are to trade up for a player they value at a position in which they are deep and so is the draft pool. In no case will they trade up for a player who's value isn't in line with the spot in which they are drafting him. Nobody trades up for a "reach" pick.

Using a stock market analogy, it's like buying when the market is high and selling when it is low.

Teams generally do better drafting into the strength of the draft, rather than the weakness.

I won't read anything dopey Meyers writes.
Mr. Bungle : 4/24/2017 3:44 pm : link
But suggesting that Tunsil may end up being a 10-year left tackle can easily be countered by suggesting that Apple may end up being another Champ Bailey. We know very little about how either player will turn out. And if a guy becomes a Pro Bowl-level player at any premium position, you never regret using a 1st-round pick on him.

If the Giants had taken Tunsil, Meyers would have written about how the Giants may regret not taking Apple. Or some other guy they didn't take at that spot, like VH3. The guy has a dearth of ideas for articles.

Teams that follow their draft board do the best
Milton : 4/24/2017 3:50 pm : link
But if you have two players of equal value available in the first round, it makes sense to draft a)the one that fills the greatest need, and b)the one who plays a position in which the draft is most shallow. I don't see how anyone could argue with that logic. Why would you draft into the strength of the draft if you were choosing between two prospects of equal value (all things being equal in terms of need)?

p.s.--I'm against trading up in general unless a prospect slips well past where you have him ranked on your draft board. If a prospect I have ranked in my top five slips out of the top 12 or 15 I would consider trading up for him. But why trade into the top fifteen for a guy you have ranked at 12-15? Since everyone's draft board is different, you should always expect to get a player ranked higher than the position in which you are drafting. This is especially true if you are at #23. If you are drafting in the top ten, there is more of a possibility that the players will come off the board in such a way that you are getting your 9th ranked player with the 9th ranked pick. That being said, rumor had it that Flowers was ranked #4 on their board and they were able to get him with the 9th pick. I think it was hitdog who said that and JonC concurred, but I could be mistaken.
I just think if they trade up for a OL
est1986 : 4/24/2017 11:54 pm : link
They must have a high opinion on him despite what the media thinks.
Flowers was #4 or 5 on their board
JonC : 7:18 am : link
I don't see that repeating this year with the available prospects, the talent isn't there and that's the rub relative to other seasons.

Admittedly, I said the same thing in the Pugh draft and they picked him, but I think they knew he'd wind up better suited to OG and teams have begun to pick OGs a little earlier when they really like them.

But an OL doesn't need to be in the top five on their board because they aren't drafting in the top ten this year. And you can't argue that the team's OL needs were any greater in 2015 than they are this year. So if Flowers was #4 on their board in 2015 and Robinson is #12 on their board this year, it still presents a scenario (oops, my bad, that's my scenario) in which the Giants may consider trading up for him should he fall to the 18th or 19th slot or get past Denver and fall to the 21st slot.
While many may be down on overall quality of OL in this draft

A bit off the mark, perhaps poorly expressed on my part ... I meant not repeating because the talent isn't there overall nor projected to be available at #23, imo.
