by Stapleton. We haven't taken an LB in the first round in 33 years, and I doubt we take an oft-injured one now. And we're taking injured TE Butt in the third? We already have him; his name is Rhett Ellison. Kaaya in the fourth? Please.

I don't think there's much chance of Kaaya lasting until the 140th pick, but he would still be good value with the 87th pick.
Interesting read, the Gary Myers article
Gregorio : 4/24/2017 12:48 pm : link
on passing on Tunsil. I was in the camp of taking a risk on Tunsil over Apple. Tunsil could be a starting left tackle for the next 10 years. If that happens, his value may end up to be greater than Apple’s. Time will tell.

I am speculating, the Will Hill debacle, combined with a new head coach (at that time) on the Giants, contributed to the decision not to take Tunsil.
If Meyers wrote it, then I'll take the opposing side in that argument.
Tom in NY : 4/24/2017 12:54 pm : link
The guy is wrong on just about everything he writes nowadays.

Tunsil MAY turn out to be a good LT..time will tell, but the risk at the time was overwhelming.

Meanwhile, Apple is a starting CB on a playoff team, with a top 3 defense. Not too shabby for a rookie.

As the article notes, the Giants already had concerns about Tunsil and there just wasn't time to investigate the bong video. I still think they should have taken the chance but can't kill them for it.
Passing on Tunsil doesn't bother me.

Passing on Taylor Decker does.
I have a friend who works for the athletic

department of the USC Trojans, and he said basically Tunsil had a long list of demands monetarily wise that they basically told him to go somewhere else with. With the recent problems at Ole' Miss it's not to surprising he ended up there. He's had character concerns for a while now.

I have seen worse mocks than this. The players he picked fit and are talented. Davis is a beast. Butt may late until round 4, Kaaya is probably going in the 3rd round I agree.
Yeah the whole

regret passing on Tunsil if he's great, but be happy with their decision if he gets in more trouble.

Reminds me of his "They should have fired Coughlin, but he did a great job winning 2 SBs." days. jeez
Yes,
lugnut : 4/24/2017 1:58 pm : link
there are worse mocks. But Davis is always hurt. I saw him compared to Jon Beason in athletic ability, but the similarities aren't only there. Butt has torn the same ACL twice. We're trying to get AWAY from injuries, right?

The Giants came close to drafting Beason that year. He was one of three said to be in the mix when they were on the clock.
I wanted nothing to do with Tunsil even before the gas mask photo

I didn't like his history of injuries in college.
Davis and being hurt
nyynyg : 4/24/2017 2:09 pm : link
don't like basing anything off videos but you have to be concerned when the beginning of a guy's SEC highlight reel is 2 min of him being down on the ground in pain and unable to get up, and then being on the bench with trainers.
i'm fine with not drafting Tunsil
UConn4523 : 4/24/2017 2:12 pm : link
as other suggested, he was sliding before that video. The weeks leading up to the draft he went from a top 5 lock to out of the top 10 (if you take any stock in reports from around the league, mocks, etc).

We opted to go with a 20 year old physical CB with no work ethic questions or major injury concerns (that I recall) who contributed early on before suffering an injury, dealt with said injury, got back out there and was very effective.

The risk was lower with Apple but the ceiling could be just as high.
It's interesting...
Dan in the Springs : 4/24/2017 2:31 pm : link
reading Jerry Jones' confidence in Jaylon Smith. Yet it remains unclear how much he will be able to do in OTA's or minicamp, almost a year and a half past the injury date. Jones is optimistic but unless he's on the field participating optimism is empty.
I would not have passed on Tunsil due to the MJ situation,
Keith : 4/24/2017 2:34 pm : link
however, it seems as though Myers is exagerrating to make a pt. I have never like Myers as a writer, specifically when he talks about the Giants, but was Tunsil ever considered a "generational talent" similar to Ogden, Jones and my boy Orlando Pace??
Personally...
Dan in the Springs : 4/24/2017 2:35 pm : link
I liked the Stapleton mock. Clearly things never fall the way you want them to, but if these players were on the board when the Giants come up (and they could be), then the Giants would be justified in each selection. That's what a mock is supposed to be anyway, right?
Taking Tunsil
Samiam : 4/24/2017 2:37 pm : link
I had been thinking for awhile that passing on Tunsil was a mistake. Mt reasoning was that 2017 is a CB rich and OT poor draft. So, taking Tunsil last year would have solidified the OL and we could have gotten at least 1 good CB this year if we didn't get another CB in a later round last year. Plus, we had Jenkins and DRC so CB, while it could have been upgraded last year, would have been ok. However, after reading Myers, I'm thinking that Reese made the right move in not taking the gamble on Tunsil. I would not assume that Tunsil, assuming he was clean last year off the field would remain clean. Lots of guys can do it for a year but once they get settled revert to form. I think Reese drafts for the long term in terms of character and lately more related to potential injuries (which is why I don't think Davis will be the pick this year).
We drafted a very good player and played it safe at the same time,
Ira : 4/24/2017 2:40 pm : link
but this team needs help at left tackle.

It's Gary Myers... what do you expect? I love how Gary ignores the fact that the defense became among the 2 or 3 best in the sport when Eli took off towards the end of the season. Gotta get over that.

Out of the top 7 or 8 DB's in 2017 you have 4 sophomores a few juniors and a senior. There's just no way to predict that. Plus if this is DRC's last year with us the blow won't be as bad.

Apple looks like he was a very good pick, so I don't regret passing on Tunsil. You need at LEAST 3 quality CB's the way this league is right now. Our defense thrived last year because we had that flexibility.
