4 long days to discuss the number 5 and 6 overall seeds left in the tournament squaring off over the next 18 days. Post all related info here. As well as any jokes you can think of about Andy in Halifax. Fuck the enemy.
Personally, I went 3-5 in the first round so i will hold off on making winner projections going forward. This one should go 6+.
As far as this series' storylines, not exactly rivals but you knew somehow/someway the Rangers big trade this past offseason would end up with that player coming back to face us in a playoff round. It's been the story of the Torts/AV tenure:
Brassard, Gaborik, Stralman, Boyle, Callahan, Hagelin, Prust... off the top of my head
Everyone will talk about Mika vs Brassard in this series and i get why. To me the more relevant analysis is Stepan vs Brassard. One of them was getting traded given cap issues, and I'm certain the Rangers shopped both (DS supposedly wanted to play for Minnesota).
But i guess Gorton got the return he liked better on Brassard.... similar players -- Stepan needs to have a big series and outperform Brass-balls for us to be successful.
Finally, Geeey vs Elaine. How did Geeey get that massive scar on his face?
2. Montreal dominated play
3. Montreal dominated play
4. Rangers dominated play
5. Dead heat - Lundqvist stopped a breakaway with 5 minutes to go in a 2-2 game. That was the series. Not us moving to 4 scoring lines. However, once Lundqvist did save the game over the first two periods and then that breakaway -we wore them down in the OT by having those 4 lines. THe better team in OT won.
6. Rangers slightly carried play. Lundqvist did toe tap a tieing goal with about 1 minute left to keep game going to OT, but the Rangers missed 2-3 great opportunities themselves in the final 10 minutes.
Thanks Mets for this detailed analysis. Sounds pretty even. Actually, I did watch about 9 minutes and that was the OT in game 5. I figured whoever won this game probably wins the series. I was shocked at what I was seeing. The Rangers were swarming Price. Like you said, no matter who came over the boards, 1st line or 4th line, was swarming. Habs looked overwhelmed and Rangers did not play this tight to the vest. When they scored, I said to myself, they deserve to win this series and I hope my Leafs come out with such passion in OT against the Capitals. Oh well. Anyhow, thanks again. Good luck to your boys. I hope you pummel Ottawa.
Whats up pal? Been a while.
Hope you enjoyed this year's Australian Open as much as I did.. Didn't think we'd get to see him win again.
Looking forward to this Rangers/Sens series.
StL has been excellent since Yeo took over for Hitchcock. I believe they were 22-8-2 in that span and they made very quick work of the Wild who had a really strong season (though this is par for the course for a Boudreau team..) in the first round.
They're not going to go quietly. If Nashville advances to the WCF, they're going to need 6 or 7 games to get there.
I gotta hit up the crying video again. Shit was hilarious.
All time great goaltender but the guy is so fucking cringe-worthy.
Where's the guy who pissed his pants? He still around?

Probably the funniest BBI thread I've ever seen in my 10 or 11 years here (Christ, I'm fucking old...)
That was one for the ages.
Subban tonight was awesome - great postgame interview tonight too. He gave it to Pierre.
Hi PJ!!
Looking at that trade, I had no idea Weber's contract has a cap hit of $7,857,141 until 2026. That could get ugly down the road.

Caps couldn't play last night due to Bullets home game. Not sure why NYR didn't play last nite. Maybe other scheduling issues.
Would've been much better viewing to split the east games.
FACKIN BULLSHIT. Everyone knew it was a terrible pick except for Gordie Clark
Goes back to the lockout I believe. Changed scheduling to promote more division rivalries, save on travel. Caps and Pens are in the Metro division bracket.
Pittsburgh is Rangers' kryptonite. Aside from that one series two years ago when they were injury-riddled (and still made the series much closer than it should have been), I don't think the Rangers have ever won a series against the scum. Most of them weren't even particularly close.

Did you forget the 2014 conference semi's when we came back from down 3-1 to beat them?
Top 3 in each division make the playoffs, which are arranged by division. Then two wild cards make it per conference. The better wild card team (WC1) plays the worse division winner in its conference. So the Rangers, WC1, played Montreal (which finished with fewer points than Washington).
The Metro Division playoffs were thus: #1 Metro team Wash vs. WC2 Toronto (b/c W.C. seeds ignore divisions). The Metro 2 and 3 teams, Pitt and CBJ, played each other. Pitt and Wash advanced to the Metro division finals.
Senators first, though... this is going to be a difficult series.

thread so dont know if this was brought up but can someone explain the NHL's seeding logic. How is Wash & Pitt playing each other in second round?

No, they changed the format 3 years ago. We got screwed by it last year (would have hosted Islanders in first round last year under the old, post-lockout format of seeding 8 teams instead of the white-hot eventual Cup champs on the road) .... but in 2014 we caught a break as the 5 seed in the East facing 6 seed Philadelphia (instead of going on the road to 4 seed Montreal with Carey Price - who we eventually faced in the ECF that year) ... and obviously this year we caught a break too.
Bummer for Capitals and Penguins two years in a row now. On the other hand, if you're on their teams and have the right attitude, you're basically saying to yourself, 'ok my toughest opponent just happens one round earlier now... win, and we're overwhelming favorites to win the Cup (as Pittsburgh did last year) ... lose and at least I get two extra weeks summer vacation'
b) They've already won so many Cups, as a bitter fan who's put seeing Lundqvist win one at the very top of my "things to see this generation' wish list -- I can deal with losing to them and having Sydney hoist a third, than seeing Caps fans get to celebrate their first for Ovechkin. It's one of those 'if I have to be miserable... so do (Flyer) and (Capital) fans too'
I do think Capitals are winning that series in 6. This is their year.
Anyway -- we have our hands full big time with a talented Ottawa team, so I'm not counting my chickens yet. What happens, happens.
Even if the Caps are on paper a better team, the Pens rolling out Crosby, Malkin and Kessel is made for the playoffs. Guys like Hornquist, Rust, and even Guentzel are perfect to play alongside them.
Hope we get there and find out.
Sucks for the kid. not much of a scorer, but really solid possession player. Tough loss for Nashville.
Have to exploit their blue line in their end. Karlsson is obviously a world-class player but they're not very deep at the position otherwise.
Would be great to get this first game and put the pressure on them to take Game 2.
I don't care if it's 3-0 Caps in this series at some point. Pitt wins it.

Was there a reason why the two Eastern games are tonight and not split up?

Thanks.
Rangers can beat Caps/Penguins if they roll four lines of skill. We saw the Leafs control play against the Caps at points because of their forwards. Rangers can do the same.
And Lundqvist can steal any given series himself.
I don't think it's likely or anything, but it's not like the Rangers have 10% odds in that series.
