OBJ on 5th year option

Big Blue '56 : 4/25/2017 8:07 am
Daily News' Pat Leonard had OBJ's tweet

Quote:

“Just wanna say today I woke up feeling extremely blessed,” Beckham tweeted. “The start of a new chapter in my life began this pass week. I will be workin harder than I ever have, to be the best that I ever have been. I’m more motivated now then I have ever been.

“Words are only that, so its time for action,” Beckham continued. “To the LOYAL Giants fans out there. I’m lettin u kno now, this will be somethin uve never seen. I’m in the lab. Head down, my fire has been lit and the world continues to fuel it. It’s time to be exactly who u are, I’m goin for it all.

“Stay Tuned. Stay blessed,” Beckham added, before signing off with the hashtag, “#ImOffTheGrid.”

with the personal/mental stuff. Sky's the limit for this guy. If he somehow finds another level...
Perhaps he'll pull a non-Steve Smith
Big Blue '56 : 4/25/2017 8:13 am : link
and sign an extension soon..Won't be what he MIGHT get on the open market in '20(assuming he's franchised in '19), but he won't have to br concerned about a career-ending injury either, imv
No one can ever question

His heart, desire to win, or that he's a one of a kind physical specimen. So for me, the only thing in his message that mattered is his #offthegrid hashtag, if that's true and he goes into pre-season mode in April...well the league has a problem on its hands, and I mean that in a good way.
What mental stuff?

I'm excited by what he's saying here, because of how well he's played so far. I'm not a basher, but if you've never seen hide of potential mental lapses with Beckham you're just a blind homer. How much more delicate do I need to phrase that I hope he's beyond things like this:

??
I was hoping there would be a promise in there

to catch the ball in future playoff games.

Oh well. You can't have everything, I guess.

Wasn't that two seasons ago? You can hang on to that if you want, I think its pointless. He didn't do anything like that last year or really even in any other games in the 2015 season (outside of being chippy).

The Carolina game was a long time ago. Everyone seems to have moved on but some fans.
Look forward to BBIs army of armchair amateur shrinks

I'm just going to leave this be. My first comment was misinterpreted and I really am not looking to argue that he's a headcase. That was never my point.
He doesn't have to go in the lab...

#kiss the kicking net

nothing wrong with loving the spot light, but often you see just as much of this him looking to be in the spot light rather than playing to be in the spot light.

As far as worrying about injury, for every Steve Smith, there's a JPP whose bank account made out a lot better by not going the safe route. Prices for the stars go up dramatically every year. That's why we fans want to lock in a year early, and players are willing to risk the rare career ending injuries.
We will see..

Its time to let that go. That was 2 years ago and he's done nothing like that on the field since. I'm positive he's past attacking other players on the field. As for kicking nets, that is still up for debate.
I love OBJ, he's a generational talent
Keith : 4/25/2017 9:18 am : link
and I pray that he finishes his career in NY. He def still has immaturity issues with channeling his passion and fire. Its mental as opposed to physical with him. He's always said the right things and acted the right way off the field, but he needs to control that stuff in the heat of the battle which comes with maturity.

Did his play slip or something? I understand your words here, but they don't seem justified. When is his effort on the field ever a problem? Often the reverse is true. He takes what happens on the field too heavily.

When a person goes "off the grid", it implies that he will be hard to find. No more public outings, etc. Stay low and out of sight.

Good for him. Concentrate on being the best WR you can be.
i am not worried

about beckham jr. on top of being an elite player whose career trajectory can be every bit like jerry rice, he has good roots, a strong support network, a strong work ethic/compete level and showed as the season went on that he can control his extreme emotion which sometimes lead to fights on the field. he still has some growing up to do, but I am fully confident he will.

Say all you want about Odell but no one can ever accuse him of not being passionate and not working hard. He doesn't just want to be a good player, make money, and call it a career.. he wants to be the best ever.

Not that you're wrong with your main point, but JPP is probably the last player I'd highlight as a person who made out by not going the safe route. Not sure exactly how much money he lost because of his not signing an extension, but there should be no doubt that he'll never make up in career earnings what he lost by not signing and then having his accident.

Are you suggesting that the extension offered by the Giants when he had two hole hands was less than what he got this year? His total earnings in between were not through the roof either, and his chance of one more large contract is now almost entirely gone.

Agreed. He really needs to work hard to channeling that passion though. No one likes the Jeremy Shockey comparisons but they are there. Another player who came into the league with fire and passion. I recall how he used to punish himself with pushups when he got drunk. And when on the field, no one was as competitive as he was (recall him fighting through tackles against the Eagles with no helmet on). But he is another guy that a) couldn't handle the media spotlight on him 24/7 and b) didn't know how to manage his emotions.

I believe Odell has more self-awareness than Jeremy did as a young guy. And he has improved. But he does have a ways to go, still. A lot can happen between now and his next contract situation. Lets hope feelings between the Giants and Beckham haven't soured by the time that day comes.

Yeah, there's no doubt that he needs to channel his emotions better - it's just going to be a process for him.

As long as he keeps his composure on the field and doesn't get into legal trouble off it, he's good in my book. He'll continue to grow. I think Brandon Marshall will be a good, positive influence on him.

fingers but all the OBJ nonsense comes from the older crowd that still wax poetic about Bill Parcells and how tough everyone USED to be. Your day is done - wake up and join the new reality.

OBJ is a modern day superstar and perhaps the most athletically gifted player in a league of genetic freaks. After the 1-handed catch everything and everyone was thrown at this kid. He was crowned as the next greatest thing and has not let us down on the football field one bit.

Any trouble with the law? no. Women? no. He went on a boat trip with his teammates.

He likes to dance. He likes to have fun and he's insanely passionate. He will develop and mature. He's a young man finding his way.

End rant.

Let me also add. I have kids in their 20s. They are amazing but not always wise, and they are not the poster children of a multi-billion dollar enterprise which is the NFL. I can't imagine how some of these players manage their success/failure. I am an old fart, but support OBJ and his style 100%. I also forgive mistakes. I hope he becomes the greatest Giant ever, and does not have to suffer all the off field issues that the current greatest (#56) has had to deal with.

It's my opinion that JPP made out better the way things worked out. He lost out a little the first 2 years, but then really cashed in on his last contract. Including the 2 years, he's getting about 58-60 mil guaranteed. 8-9 year one. 10-11 year two, 40 current contract. Plus everything he'll earn on top of the guarantees. he wasn't getting that out of the pre hand injury deal (signing long term)

Shockey may have had legitimate struggles with Alcohol

Not sure it's fair to really compare the two situations. Jeremy Shockey probably had real issues he had to cope with his whole life, from his family issues to his excessive lifestyle.

Like many athletes today, including some superstars, they are 'addicted' to social media. Simply the times..That said, he's never been associated with drugs and alcohol or abuse to women(or anyone for that matter)..In that arena, he has been quite smart
