NFT: NYC steak houses

26.2 : 4/25/2017 9:01 am
Hey everyone. I'm in NYC one more night and looking to treat myself to one of the many steak houses here in town. I'm staying in Times Square, but I'm willing to travel around if I have to.

So which one is the best? Keep in mind I'll be by myself so hopefully a place that won't be totally weird if I'm sitting there by myself. I've been to Del Friscos before and thought it was good. I've also been to Uncle Jacks Midtown before, which wasn't as good.

Also, where is a good place for craft beer near where I am?

Thanks in advance!
Smith and Wollenskys

depends on how far you are willing to travel
UConn4523 : 4/25/2017 9:06 am : link
but keeping it somewhat close to midtown you can't go wrong with Wolfgangs (though i'm not sure you want to head across and uptown a bit). The Stags Head is close by for drinks before or after.

Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse on 9th avenue and w 56th

or
Keens Steakhouse which is super old school on w 36th street
Go to Luger's
jcn56 : 4/25/2017 9:16 am : link
It has dropped off a bit, but it's an experience you should have at least once. It's in Brooklyn, so a bit of a schlep, and they only take cash or checks. But as far as steaks go, it's a NY institution.
Pretty sure
mrvax : 4/25/2017 9:17 am : link
some of the steak houses are cash only, no CC/debit cards.
Just a heads up.
I got the ribeye
pjcas18 : 4/25/2017 9:22 am : link
at Delmonico's Kitchen on West 36th during restaurant week last year.

One of the best steaks I've ever had.

Also had a wedge salad, side of creamed spinach and king crab mac and cheese.

incredible meal, add in a couple scotches and hard to beat

Forget about Steak houses....you can get a good steak in any city in the world.

Go for views ....The RiverCafe, Giandos (both are in Brooklyn) or The Rainbow Room.. I'm sure there's more but those are three I'm familiar with.
The food is only good at Giando's, The River Cafe superb...but usually requires a months reservation...go there for cocktails, sit at the bar, see the sun go down, walk down the street and find a "nice" restaurant.
I've traveled all over the world, there is nothing more spectacular than the River Cafe,

is great. Del Monicos is classic
I love when a guy asks for a steak

or has a specific request - e.g., good places to stay in Aruba -- and some other guy comes on here and says 'you don't want a steak'

or

'you don't want to stay in Aruba ... try X instead'

Ok then.
Went to Keen's last night

... I like Luger's and Smith and Wollenskys for the experience... however the best steak I have had in Manhattan was at the Palm. NY Strip. And it wasn't just once, so I'm guessing it was not a lucky hit... lol

That said the Palm is old and a bit boring so if it's really that NYC steakhouse experience you are after I would recommend Luger's or S&W.

The best part was Giando's as a recommendation. Of all the places you could recommend in NYC, that dump?!

'Hey, you don't want to stay in Aruba, how does scenic downtown Newark sound?'
To the question
Deej : 4/25/2017 10:16 am : link
Im not big on S&W. At least, not their steak. They make a great seafood tower.

I'd say go to Sparks. Great steak. Also, it's where Gotti had Paul Castellano and his underboss gunned down. Right outside the entrance.
Quality Meats is a great call
JonC : 4/25/2017 10:17 am : link
Del Frisco and Strip House as well.
Del Frisco makes a delicious steak
Deej : 4/25/2017 10:20 am : link
But it makes that steak in 18 cities, including Washington DC near where the OP lives.

I'd much sooner go to a one-off NY institution -- Lugers, Keanes, or Sparks being at the top of my list.
dining by yourself
Enzo : 4/25/2017 10:28 am : link
changes the equation a bit. I wouldn't go to a place like STK by myself. But maybe I'd sit at the bar at Sparks or whatever.
NYC
TyreeHelmet : 4/25/2017 10:49 am : link
There are tons of great steakhouses but Lugers is the best. May be a little weird sitting alone though and their bar is on the smaller side.

I would check out American Cut in TriBeCa. If I was dining alone, this place is preferably. Get the smoked infused bourbon.
Quality Meats is excellent
manh george : 4/25/2017 10:51 am : link
Quality eats Italian, around the corner, might be better.

You can stay local, though. The Strip House Midtown is top rate at 15 w 44, (link).

is pretty amazing if you're into that kind of thing.

I'd find a good steakhouse bar with a cute bartender and set up shop there. Dining alone in the dining room might catch some attitude from your server who should be working a two top.

Great suggestions guys. I think its gonna be sparks or quality meats depending on how the bar looks for dinner. I'm gonna try and get to either place on the early side to avoid crowds...there is also this place called Wolfgangs thats right across the street from my hotel. Probably not going there, however.

Thanks for the assistance guys!
The food at Wolfgangs is fine
bigbluehoya : 4/25/2017 12:30 pm : link
But I wouldn't recommend this place based on what you've said. The bar here gets very crowded due to location with a lot of people there for drinks only. Sitting down at the bar for a relaxing dinner is not tenable at this place based on what I have seen. I work literally right across the street and the bar always looks packed.

The bar at Strip House on 44th has a great ambiance in my opinion and would lend itself better especially if you're going to be on the earlier side.

if you end up at Sparks I recommend the cold asparagus and then the sirloin. I think I've had the sirloin there about 15-20 times...and the quality is remarkably consistent.

Ditto. I love me some Del Frisco's, but when I've been to the locations in Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Vegas it loses its luster.

Sparks
Deej : 4/25/2017 2:26 pm : link
I once saw someone order a 7 lbs lobster there (I asked the waiter how big it was). They rolled it out on a cart. It looked like a 6 year old kid. Damnedest thing I ever saw.
I think it's more interesting to go to a non-steakhouse that happens
Jim in Hoboken : 4/25/2017 10:59 pm : link
to servea a great steak, so you don't have to eat shrimp cocktails or thick-cut bacon for appetizers.

For that purpose, I think the Breslin, Momofuku Ssam Bar and Osteria Morini are both quite good. If you can get into Bohemian, try that, kinda fun.

For straight up steakhouses, a good newcomer for me would be Bowery Meat Company.

I've bought 6 and 7lb lobsters before, but not at restaurants, from seafood shops up here in MA. they're much cheaper (per pound) than smaller lobsters and if you want to make lobster rolls or something else with lobster definitely way to go. And the myth about the larger lobsters being rubbery or not as tasty as the smaller lobsters is far from true. Blindfolded I seriously doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference.

I did need to use a sledge hammer to crack open the claws though, the lobster crackers were a joke and so was a small regular hammer.

That's the thing - no difference in taste
jcn56 : 4/26/2017 9:01 am : link
but more difficult to cook and a hell of a lot harder to shell.

I was in Newport RI a few years back at a fish market and they had a six pound lobster that I brought back to cook. Finding a pot to fit that fucker was a challenge, and then we practically needed the sawzall to pick it apart.

Definitely a challenge. My grandfather owned a seafood restaurant in CT (before I was born) and my father gave me some of the pots he still had from there so I have giant restaurant size pots I use like once every couple years. usually to cook lobsters when my father comes up to visit or steamers (in bulk).
I've heard Bowery Meat Company and American Cut
JonC : 4/26/2017 9:35 am : link
are both phenomenal, but not had the pleasure yet.

Dylan Prime was top notch, but they closed up one night and never re-opened due to the tax evasion hammer.
American Cut

is super. Even for just drinks at bar and an app

Try it out...
There is a difference..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/26/2017 9:37 pm : link
in the taste of the meat in the larger lobsters, which is why they are primarily harvested for commercial meat.

The sweet spot(no pun intended) is between 1 and 1.5 pounds. That's where the meat is the sweetest and the most tender.
Not a steakhouse per se..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/26/2017 9:38 pm : link
but I'm going to Cannibal Friday to meet my Sister and have the pigs head!
Ikinari Steak
giantfan2000 : 4/26/2017 9:46 pm : link
there is a new steak place called Ikinari Steak,
it is from japan and you stand up and eat .. there are no chairs in the place

they have $20 lunch special
there are huge lines to get in

and ironically it is across the street from Tim Ho Wan a dumpling place that is also getting fierce buzz ( went there and it was pretty amazing )

so if you go by east 10th and 4th avenue - you will see two long lines across the street from each other ..
it is pretty crazy

Someone ordering a lobster more than 2 pounds is doing so just to show off ordering a big lobster. It shows lack of taste or awareness.
I really like Del Frisco's
