Hey everyone. I'm in NYC one more night and looking to treat myself to one of the many steak houses here in town. I'm staying in Times Square, but I'm willing to travel around if I have to.
So which one is the best? Keep in mind I'll be by myself so hopefully a place that won't be totally weird if I'm sitting there by myself. I've been to Del Friscos before and thought it was good. I've also been to Uncle Jacks Midtown before, which wasn't as good.
Also, where is a good place for craft beer near where I am?
Thanks in advance!
And close to here is a 3 level beer garden which i believe is on 43rd and 3rd.
or
Keens Steakhouse which is super old school on w 36th street
Just a heads up.
One of the best steaks I've ever had.
Also had a wedge salad, side of creamed spinach and king crab mac and cheese.
incredible meal, add in a couple scotches and hard to beat

I'd throw Mastros into the mix as well
Go for views ....The RiverCafe, Giandos (both are in Brooklyn) or The Rainbow Room.. I'm sure there's more but those are three I'm familiar with.
The food is only good at Giando's, The River Cafe superb...but usually requires a months reservation...go there for cocktails, sit at the bar, see the sun go down, walk down the street and find a "nice" restaurant.
I've traveled all over the world, there is nothing more spectacular than the River Cafe,

'you don't want to stay in Aruba ... try X instead'
Ok then.
That said the Palm is old and a bit boring so if it's really that NYC steakhouse experience you are after I would recommend Luger's or S&W.

It's a BBI staple.

The best part was Giando's as a recommendation. Of all the places you could recommend in NYC, that dump?!
'Hey, you don't want to stay in Aruba, how does scenic downtown Newark sound?'
I'd say go to Sparks. Great steak. Also, it's where Gotti had Paul Castellano and his underboss gunned down. Right outside the entrance.
I'd much sooner go to a one-off NY institution -- Lugers, Keanes, or Sparks being at the top of my list.
I would check out American Cut in TriBeCa. If I was dining alone, this place is preferably. Get the smoked infused bourbon.
You can stay local, though. The Strip House Midtown is top rate at 15 w 44, (link).

I'd find a good steakhouse bar with a cute bartender and set up shop there. Dining alone in the dining room might catch some attitude from your server who should be working a two top.
Thanks for the assistance guys!
The bar at Strip House on 44th has a great ambiance in my opinion and would lend itself better especially if you're going to be on the earlier side.
Ok, that does it! I'm going to sous vide and sear two NY strip steaks tonight!!
Thanks for the assistance guys!
if you end up at Sparks I recommend the cold asparagus and then the sirloin. I think I've had the sirloin there about 15-20 times...and the quality is remarkably consistent.

Ditto. I love me some Del Frisco's, but when I've been to the locations in Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Vegas it loses its luster.
For that purpose, I think the Breslin, Momofuku Ssam Bar and Osteria Morini are both quite good. If you can get into Bohemian, try that, kinda fun.
For straight up steakhouses, a good newcomer for me would be Bowery Meat Company.
I've bought 6 and 7lb lobsters before, but not at restaurants, from seafood shops up here in MA. they're much cheaper (per pound) than smaller lobsters and if you want to make lobster rolls or something else with lobster definitely way to go. And the myth about the larger lobsters being rubbery or not as tasty as the smaller lobsters is far from true. Blindfolded I seriously doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference.
I did need to use a sledge hammer to crack open the claws though, the lobster crackers were a joke and so was a small regular hammer.
I was in Newport RI a few years back at a fish market and they had a six pound lobster that I brought back to cook. Finding a pot to fit that fucker was a challenge, and then we practically needed the sawzall to pick it apart.

Definitely a challenge. My grandfather owned a seafood restaurant in CT (before I was born) and my father gave me some of the pots he still had from there so I have giant restaurant size pots I use like once every couple years. usually to cook lobsters when my father comes up to visit or steamers (in bulk).
Dylan Prime was top notch, but they closed up one night and never re-opened due to the tax evasion hammer.
Try it out...
The sweet spot(no pun intended) is between 1 and 1.5 pounds. That's where the meat is the sweetest and the most tender.
it is from japan and you stand up and eat .. there are no chairs in the place
they have $20 lunch special
there are huge lines to get in
and ironically it is across the street from Tim Ho Wan a dumpling place that is also getting fierce buzz ( went there and it was pretty amazing )
so if you go by east 10th and 4th avenue - you will see two long lines across the street from each other ..
it is pretty crazy
