NFT: Dale Earnhardt Jr. to retire after 2017

jc in c-ville : 4/25/2017 12:20 pm
While I never was a NASCAR fan, at all actually, I do remember back 10-12 years ago that many folks were saying that NASCAR was ready for a huge progression and was going to be the KING of sports.

Well, you throw in the gas prices spike, the recession and recently, retirement of its most popular drivers such as Dale, where is this sport headed?

As I'm not in the loop, do those of you who follow it feel it will never be able to re-capture the magic of 2000-2008?

You had rivalries, drivers who really hated each other. Fans who hated other fans who liked a driver your driver hated. Those days are gone, these drivers all bitch now about too much and they are not allowed to settle their issues on the track. The cars have become so expensive to run that the single car owners are a way of the past which cuts down on more of the rivalries. Watching Dale Sr., race Dale Jarrett, Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliot and watching so of the younger kids coming up like Kyle Busch and Jr. had people all excited. All the changes they tried to make to make the sport better has made it worse. At least you can still bring your own cooler and beer into a race.
Was never a big fan myself, but I know a few who are

Their complaints generally are one of a few lines:

1)NASCAR is a soulless corporate dictatorship that has actively tried to squeeze all of the personality and controversy out of racing. Think Goodell on steroids.

2)Related to that, the races almost feel stage-managed with all of the caution flags. NASCAR has their favorites and will do everything they can to aid them.

3)In their attempts to broaden the sport's appeal, they have at best ignored, at worst actively antagonized, their existing fan base.

4)The Chase for the Cup sucks.
Restrictor plates killed the sport.

Racing ended the day they began governing the engines - Bill Elliott set the NASCAR qualifying record of 212mph THIRTY YEARS AGO - we've had boring, boring pack racing as the norm ever since.

They should have re-engineered the tracks to slow them down instead of killing top end. Let the drivers drive.

Restrictor plates slowed the cars down

so they wouldn't fly into the stands. Nascar lost so much when Dale Sr died. He was the Babe Ruth of the sport. I like the changes this year with the stage racing but I do believe they do look for debris when certain drivers lose a lap.
