NFT: To any distance runner I need advice

blueblood'11 : 4/25/2017 2:37 pm
I've been a distance runner for a lot of years half marathons never a full marathon. Never ever had a quad issue ever in my whole life. Out of nowhere I had an IT band issue in both legs I'm guessing from over use but something I never had before either. Once that subsided I started up again and the IT never came back. It went fine for a bit then the quad issue started to pop up.

Walking up stairs it felt like a stabbing pain in the quad. I didn't run fo a week and it cleared up so I thought. I started running again systematically increasing my mileage from two to three to four. After doing five a few times felt nothing so I up it to 6 1/2. All good. I took two days off and did a easy half our jog yesterday with the intent to go 8 today. Well, after I fifnished the stabbing pain is back and sore as hell.

Anyone out there have or have had this issue and what was the remedy. I am conscientious about doing the proper stretching always have. I just don't know what the problem is and why I'm suddenly having it. I'm considering seeing a sports medicine specialist but I don't want to if I don't have too. Any help would be appreciated. Lastly I ruled out my running shoes because it's a make and model I've been in for several years so I'm in flux trying to figure this thing out.
Get a Foam Roller

or find a sports masseuse or sign up for Physical Therapy.

I have a foam roller as well and another type that is more rigid. I can tell you when I'm on the sore spots it really is uncomfortable. As physical therapy I had a groin issue a year ago that needed therapy. A lot of it before I cou,d get back to running. I went for four months. And it's not cheap. I don't want to have to go for more therapy but if this doesn't straighten out I may have to resign my self to the fact I may need to go for more.
Foam rolling, myofascial release techniques, stretching, and massage

are not always appropriate, depending on what kind of issue you have going on. If you have a muscle strain, working on it too much can make it worse in some cases.
How about for possible

Turf toe like joint pain. Not terrible pain, but achy big toe joint. I've been training for a 10 miler and the last 10 miles I ran has hurt that joint.
Possible it's an overuse injury. You could have sprained a ligament in

your toe, or if you recently increased your workload drastically, your tissue may just not be used to doing that much work. Check your shoes as well. If they are old or you are not getting support in the right places, your foot/ankle alignment will be off, and the movement at the joints in your foot/ankle will not be normal. Misalignment over the course of one or many long runs is a good way to end up with an injury in the LE.

So you think it could be a muscle strain. It's funny because it didn't matter what I did After I stayed off it for a week in the way working around the house going up stairs it felt great as the week went on. So at the end of the that week that's when I decided to resume my training. If it is a muscle strain could it behave this way?
It's hard for me to say, but let me ask you a few questions that

may clarify things a bit.

You describe the pain as 'stabbing.' Does it radiate down towards your knee, or is it painful in that one location?

Where in your quad is the pain? Is it in the muscle belly, or is it closer to your knee, right above(or below) the kneecap?

What causes it to feel worse? Is it painful when you push off? Land? Painful when you press on the area?

What causes the pain to feel better? Does the pain subside quickly, or does it bother you for awhile after you stop running?
Also, muscle strains can be slow to heal depending on

how bad they are. If it was strained and you kept running on it, it likely exacerbated the issue.

It really could be many things. I would suggest going in for a physical therapy evaluation. Depending on where you live, you may not need a doctor's prescription beforehand.

Yeah the woman who took care of my groin problem did a great job getting me back on the road. I actually screwed it up ice skating soon about a month after I had done a half marathon. I'm not sure if I have to see a physician first so I have to check it out. But it's getting frustrating because I was working toward a 10k and my training was going great So I thought.
New York, New Jersey, and CT all have direct access laws

that will allow you to see a Pt directly without seeing a physician first. The laws do vary by state, so be sure to check that out first, but you can save yourself some time and money by just going directly to a PT. You will also be able to choose your PT vs where your physician refers you to.
