I have said that I would not draft a QB this year, although I might take Seth Russell late on day three if he's healthy. But despite the ferocious opposition here, there is an argument to make for the Giants selecting Kizer at #23.
From Walter Football:
There are scouts around the league who feel that Kizer has the best skill set and most athletic upside of any quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft. He had an inconsistent junior season, as he completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,925 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for seven touchdowns. His completion percentage was thrown off by playing a game in the midst of Hurricane Matthew and his receivers consistently dropping well-thrown passes. Kizer played better as a sophomore when he had more talent around him like a top-25 wide receiver in Will Fuller), a top-10 pick at left tackle in Ronnie Stanley, a second-round center in Nick Martin, and a third-round running back in C.J. Prosise. In 2015, Kizer completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,884 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He picked up 520 yards with 10 scores on the ground.
Additional reasons:
(1) He doesn't need to play right now.
(2) He has all the physical requirements to play QB in the NFL, including mobility.
(3) He played at a major D1 school.
(4) The Giants likely won't have any chance at the QBs next year.
(5) Eli has two to three years left in all likelihood.
(6) Drafting a QB in the first round means the Giants have him for five years.
(7) The Giants don't have to trade picks to get him. So they won't have to do what the Rams and Eagles did to get Goff and Wentz.
(8) KIzer reminds me of a thinner, more mobile, version of Daunte Culpepper.
(9) There haven't been many rumors about the Giants being interested in him. They sent OC Mike Sullivan to his pro day, but not much else. They may be trying to prevent anyone from thinking they are interested.
(10) Mike Mayock says he has the highest ceiling of any of the QBs, and Reese likes those players.
I think the chance of this happening is maybe 10%, but remember that QBs get overdrafted. I just read a rumor that the 49ers are considering Mahomes at #2. Webb may be drafted in the first round. Peterman in the second. That same report from Walter Football says the Steelers are very interested in Kizer. It could happen.
We must go for the title....With final pieces.
If the Giants are concern about Eli future...Then yes.
"He's a loser." - ( New Window )
If they are in "win later" mode, they draft a QB early.
IMO, the Giants are in win now mode, ergo, no fucking QB in round 1 so shut the fuck up with this shit already.
well put
So whether it is Kizer, Mahomes, Webb, et al., they only have 3 years to ensure they are in place to stick around for a 5th year or more in an extension. With the argument that Eli has 2-3 years left, when are the rookies going to get the opportunity prove they are worth sticking around? And don't mention the possibility of Eli being benched. If Eli is healthy, he is under center. Ownership will not allow a 1st contract HC to bench their 2-time SB MVP getting paid 15-20 mil/year for any of the players in this draft.
