From Dave Te-Let the Draft Rumors Continue...

nflscouting : 4/26/2017 10:55 am
At this rate, my pancakes are getting cold! The phones are ringing, the mouths are wagging. Here is some more of the usual craziness as draft day approaches;

Most draft analysts predict that Garrett Bolles will be the first offensive lineman drafted, possibly with the #20 pick by Denver, but word out of Baltimore is that Ozzie Newsome will bring in a player from his old school to the organization by taking Cam Robinson at #16. Newsome’s original intention was to upgrade the receiving unit, with Mike Williams his primary target, but if the Tennessee-Cleveland deal goes through, the Titans are also eyeballing Williams at #12.

While Jamal Adams’ name has been etched into the #3 slot for the Bears, Chicago might switch gears, depending upon the outcome of San Francisco’s decision at #2. Most assume that the 49ers would take local product Solomon Thomas, if they do not trade the choice, but if Thomas slides and Jonathan Allen’s medical recheck alleviates any concerns, the Bears are strongly considering upgrading the defensive line first, before turning attention to the secondary in the later rounds.

One whisper making the rounds is that Derek Barnett is actually the 49ers preference, over Thomas, if they can not find a suitor for #2. For weeks, this was supposed to be the selection that everyone expected Cleveland to trade up for in order to get their quarterback, but Lynch might have asked for too much in return, compared to the offer that Tennessee is willing to take from the Browns. San Francisco can still trade down, as both Cincinnati and Carolina are still in pursuit of leap-frogging Jacksonville to make a run at Fournette.

That could set up the Jets to score who many believe is the best player in the draft – Adams. Sure, he could be a perfect fit for Dick LeBeau in Tennessee, but the Titans seem intent on wheeling and dealing and have all but stated that either #5 or #18 will be auctioned off. They could also trade both picks with an eye at the slew of second round level talent and to add to the cache of picks next year, as the 2018 class looks to be loaded.

I'm staying hydrated on Draft Rumors all day today and tomorrow.

This is good stuff thanks Dave!
Pretty awesome

stuff, thanks Dave!
Jets would probably
ryanmkeane : 4/26/2017 11:08 am : link
like it if Cleveland jumped them for Trubisky. Why would Jets take a QB this year when there's 4 or 5 possible studs with much higher grades next season? Just doesn't make sense to me. Jets need PLAYERS at every position, and the QB crop this year isn't great. If they took a QB at 6, I'd be shocked.

Somewhere in my mucky muck, I posted the combined rankings of the 2017 & projected 2018 QB classes. Mahomes was the top 2017 guy, seventh overall. Yeah, I would definitely wait for an arm, but NY Jets alert - Josh Dobbs is getting a lot of extra evaluation the last month. Might be one of the top Day 3 values out there.
Oh, if this was 2018 & the QBs in college perform as expected in 2017, I say next year's 1-2-3 picks are Darnold, Josh Allen & Louisville's Jackson. Those that say Jackson is not a QB? I refer to a bigger version of Russel Wilson
Great stuff - thanks!

In that NYJ scenario, Adams would be another Leonard Williams - falling into the Jets' laps much later than they have any business getting him. It would thrill Jet fans, but they would still have to live with being Jet fans.
I hope we don't deplete our draft
Jay in Toronto : 4/26/2017 11:22 am : link
by trying to beat out Denver for Bolles.
the more QB's that go in the early first round the better

and closer we get to OJ Howard.
more great stuff!! Thanks Dave

Bolles would scare me. At 25 , do you see him as able to add more bulk? We already have a number of OLs who are not particuclarly strong or physical.
The negative stuff I hear about Bolles amazes me
idinkido : 4/26/2017 12:11 pm : link
because he probably has the best movement skills of all the prospective OTs and would instantly be better than Flowers at LT.
This is all so awesome

Thanks!
I will be shocked if Baltimore goes OL again in round 1

Especially since none of these guys are rated that high.
Dammit Dave, I haven't had pancakes in over a year

Watch film-see how much Bolles relies upon Asiata to make him look good-guy needs to give Asiata part of his signing bonus. Also, look at his lower body. Remember the Bears' Troy Auzenne? Same build-poor anchor

There was lots more chatter, but outside of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, nobody lies more than GMs at this time. What I did was access the teams' player report views, info requests & recent film view watch list. If they are not BSing, they did spend time & effort looking at the guy. If no track record, I tell them don't BS or that they should do something simply impossible for their anatomy (I'm from Brooklyn, I'm sure you know the real choice words I used there. I don't give my scouts crap until they try playing Snidley Whiplash or Donald Trump with me)

Check out the thread I started on the top 100 boards (Top 100 boards by draftniks). It's a myth that none of the OL are rated highly. Cam Robinson is consistently ranked in the 15-20 range.

THR has him at #15
Mayock has him at #16
Draft Board Guru has him at #17
Gil Brandt has him at #15
Rob Rang has him at #19

The criticism of the OL in the draft is that there are no top 10 grades and the pool is shallow in general, but nobody (other than some silly fools on BBI) is saying there aren't any OL worthy of a 1st grade.

Newsome backing off on original plans to trade down & want to take his guy at Bama to slot in at left guard. They lost some meat upfront, but I agree that it might not be a good idea. Everyone continues to think he will go WR with Davis a target, but look at the lack of production they got from another injured 1st round WR-Perriman. Also, if Bolden does not retire, Newsome is pursuing bringing him back in the fold, making WR a Day 2 type of need in Maryland
random question
SHO'NUFF : 4/26/2017 1:43 pm : link
where would Eli Apple fall under in this year's draft? Ahead of Latimore?

HugeS : 4/26/2017 2:14 pm : link
I don't think the BBI consensus is that there aren't offensive linemen worthy of a first round grade but that there aren't any solid first round left tackles if like most NFL teams, we view Forrest Lamp and Cam Robinson projecting best as guards. Ramczyk and Bolles would have been rated below Tunsil, Stanley, Conklin, and Decker. Realistically they would probably have been in the back of the first to early second round tier with Ifedi and Spriggs. While not impossible I find it unlikely that a tackle needy team last year would have gambled with a top 20 or even 25 pick on either Bollles or Ramczyk.

Other analysts have opined that Bolles anchor is questionable too, and i would not question your eye. Yet, Bolles is going to get drafted in the first round and some say before the 23rd pick. I look at how quick his feet are and how swiftly and effectively he moves to block edge rushers and think that if the Giants find him available when they pick they will take him and help him against the bull rushers.
Flowers is strong and yet look at how off balance he plays.
