drafting a QB: importance of winning records in college

Les in TO : 4/26/2017 4:27 pm
there was an interesting small piece in the WSJ about the correlation between winning in college and the pros, focusing on Patrick Mahomes, who was 13-16 in college and a possible first round pick. Parcells was interviewed and agreed that if you are going to be a very good QB in the NFL let alone elite, you should have a winning college record.

there have been 12 QBs selected in the first two rounds since 1996 and they include the likes of jay cutler, charlie batch, jimmy clausen, kyle boller and other busts and look to be busts.

food for thought when it comes time to draft eli's replacement.

12 QBs in the first two rounds in the last 21 drafts??

There's no way that's accurate.

When Phil Simms was at Morehead State, they won 3, 2, 2, and 2 games. I don't know how many of them were his starts, but I'm guessing he had a losing record.

has to be wrong. Browns have drafted 11,, I believe in about that time.
Re the thread: If the QB has carried a poor to moderate group of teammates to a winning record,he knows how to win. While the record is a little important, the QB's skill, his intelligence and work ethic, his ability to fit into the teams scheme, and refuse to lose attitude are what makes a college QB and NFL QB.
I think he meant 12 QBs with losing records, not 12 in total.

Anyway, I would say it's not entirely fair and not too much weight should be given to it, but almost none of the QBs that are going to go first round should anyway this year (including if the Giants reach for one) and this would just be another small piece as to why Mahomes, specifically, is such a huge risk.
Les should clarify this post or get rid of it. Proofread your crap.

has to be viewed as just one piece of an evaluation, it cannot be the sole reason to downgrade or eliminate a QB. Have to look at the whole picture.

I watched Trubisky's game against Stanford in the Sun Bowl (a game NC lost), and he put them in position to win, and made several clutch throws that his receivers dropped, and they ultimately lost the game on a 2-pt conversion play in which almost none of the offensive line blocked anyone, nor did they pick up the blitz... Trubisky had no chance. That was a loss for him but if you watch that game you come away very impressed with his poise, leadership, and the clutch throws he made when it was all on the line.
