DAVE TE POLL-BIG BACK/SMALL BACK

nflscouting : 4/26/2017 7:24 pm
Let's say the Giants don't feel any of the running backs after the noted guys are gone & decide to wait until Day Three. I want to see what you guys think;
A-Go big for a short yardage guy
B-look for a multi-purpose type with receiving/catching skills, but more of as third-down guy.
C-draft both types with multiple picks
D-wait until next year

Also, you are the boss in this decision. Who would you take & why?
C is an option for me...

I mean we really only have 2 RBs so drafted 2 wouldn't be crazy. I would prefer not to waste two picks on RBs though. Ideally for me I want a power back and Elijah Hood is my favorite RB for a late round pick. I think he is better than Conner, Samje, etc when it comes to being the big backs. He is also a good pass blocker and has good hands. He is a player I would love on the Giants. If we go more pass catching Jeremy McNichols if he is in the 4th or later round guys like Aaron Jones or I'tavius Mathers would be great. All 4 can catch and run the ball.

For me I just take one though and I would go with a power back in Hood.
I love Kareem Hunt in the 3rd. He reminds me of a bigger

Bradshaw. I'd prefer an all around RB rather than a specialist.
Just Get a Good Back

I think everything else is unnecessary. Get a back who can do what is needed and I don't care how he's classified

My take is that I don't look at them like that. I think the Giants need a guy that could be an every down back and a short yardage back. Some of the best short yardage backs were smaller guys. That is a skill regardless of size. As a defender you can lose track of a smaller guy behind the linemen and then the next thing you know he is shot out of a cannon through a hole that didn't look like a hole. A bigger back can push his way forward but if he doesn't have the short area quickness and initial burst then it doesn't matter. In your podcast Jacobs was brought up. When the Giants OL was a strength he was great at short yardage runs. When the line went downhill he was tip-toeing too much in the backfield because he wasn't able to adjust quickly enough to where the hole actual was and not where it was suppose to be.

I also brought up an every down player. I love Perkins and feel he complements this OL well but we have no idea if he can last 16 games and be effective. If he misses time or is ineffective them who is replacing him? Darkwa? Vereen? No way. They are okay for certain formations and situations but not every down players. Darkwa may be able to fill in for a game but I don't trust him more than that.

I think Blount would be a great add along with a player that will complement their OL NOT Perkins. Everybody always talks about how RBs complement each other. Imo, it is how the RBs work with the OL. That is way more important.

We have Perkins who is set to be the main back, he can cut and go, made some people look silly with some great cuts last year, we also have Veeren whom is one of the games best on third down when healthy, we are missing the big back, short yardage, bruiser. Alot of this depends on the Blount situation. If we add Blount, we dont need the power back and we can grab the well rounded back late.
I'm reminded of a quote I read prior to the 1989 draft...

When comparing Tim Worley to Barry Sanders, an anonymous scout (or was it a personnel exec?) said "always take the big back over the little back." Hahaha!!!....
Just a well-rounded back for me.

He has to run with power, but don't want a plodder without any speed or wiggle, however.

Here's what worries me, not that their backfield is in the same class as the Steelers.
If you look at the Giants & Pitt, there was an alarming thing on offense - they predominently played with 11 personnel. By that, I mean, there were few interchangeable parts.
Look at Pitt with out Bell - massive difference. Same when they lost Bryant to suspension. It just looked like last year, the Giants did not have much faith in their sub packages. I agree, get a back that can do it all, but I sort of blame college for a lack of great backs. All too often, you see coaches redshirt these HS runners & the next thing you know, we see them next spring lining up on defense. With the spread so prevalent in college, the scatbacks are more en vogue.
Oh the days of Snell-Boozer, Franco-Bleier, Hornubg-Taylor, Csonks-Kiick, oh and a little bit of Mercury for a change of pace. I would love to see the big back, the on-back guys like Riggins, but alas, mamas are making their babies smaller these days

I want some speed out of the backfield. Perkins has great make you miss ability, but is not a breakaway threat. Maybe the kid from Berkley.

a big back bulldozer who can also block.

I sometimes wonder why they don't resign Will Johnson to see if he'd settle for a league minimum deal. He is 6'2" / 240 lbs and was an exceptional blocker at Pittsburgh and got a few carries and catches, but used primarily as a body guard for the QB. I had big hopes for him last year before he got hurt. "Will, we never knew you"
Joe Williams would look real good in blue!

don't know if he would still be available though?

Versatile back who can catch short passes. That's one thing the offense lacked last year and is a perfect fit for a wco. Hopefully vereen fills the role
A big tough guy
JerseyCityJoe : 4/26/2017 8:45 pm : link
I believe it really helps to have a guy like that as one of your rbs. When the other teams D starts getting chippie and dogging you having a mean mother in the backfield can work wonders.

I am not certain that I would draft a back unless one falls and represents excellent value.

The Giants have too many other needs and there are still some free agent backs that they can sign.

If the Giants can improve the line then Perkins, etc. will be better this year.

Outside of the immediate needs, what would you like to see them do rounds 4-7? You're one of the smarter cookies in the Keebler box, sop I value your opinion

+1, and this was on display in the Super Bowl with how both Atlanta and New England were using their backs so effectively

Would love to see us draft at least one RB who's a serious threat out of the backfield...rather than overpay another castoff from the Pats RB stable

I think vision is the most important attribute in an NFL back. This assumes the measurable metrics pass the threshold. Which backs in this draft have the best vision?

The Giants have not had a back with great vision since Tiki. Perkins show some potential.

Andre Brown had great vision but he kept breaking his damn legs.

Most with different opinions, but look at the responses - most back it up with valid opinions.
Well, I've been sleep deprived & have to hit the sack. Before I go, just something silly to one of the BBI readers, I wanna thank Uncle Dave. I'm 63, most of my uncs have gone to hell or some basketball court in the sky. It's been fun bantering & calling somebody "uncle" at my age!
I lean toward 'A', for purely practical reasons.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/27/2017 8:43 am : link
Sure, if McCaffery at 23 or Kamara at 55 is there and clear BPA, go for it. But the team has a lot of needs, and there's room to hope that we haven't seen the best of Paul Perkins yet. So I'd be happy with a complementary back like De'Veon Smith deep in day three.
I think a guy like Samaje Perine would be a combination of A & B.
Klaatu : 4/27/2017 9:00 am : link
A good short-yardage/goal-line back, and a good blocker and receiver, too.
I think our offense needs to be more physical, punishing...
Dan in the Springs : 4/27/2017 10:42 am : link
and on day three, if I were choosing between these types I'd take someone that makes secondary players nervous when they have to come up in run support. Also one who can set a tone by punishing LBers as well 5-6 times a game.

I have a theory that the offense gets softer by being beat up regularly in practice by the defense. Time to make sure that the offense has a chance to beat up on the defense a little.
