Draft Day Springs Eternal

Here we are again. I thought I recognized you. On the eve of another NFL draft. 21st you say? Wow...has it been that many years? I wonder how Pete is doing.

I wonder about a lot of things, actually. Will Eli bounce back to form in 2017 or have we seen his best years? Will we finally be impressed by a Ben McAdoo-run offense? Can we pick up enough pieces to legitimately challenge for the title this season?

I think the theme for the draft in 2017 is get enough talent on offense to make a serious run before Eli retires. Just go for broke before the inevitable rebuild.

And I don't think that Jerry Reese can afford to draft anything but offensive line in the first round and explain it away later if we still can't run the ball or protect Eli this season. Hate to say it but Reese probably keeps it pretty safe this time around, for his own legacy.

Besides, the Giants proved you can win Super Bowls with an average offensive line (David Diehl at left tackle, anyone?). If we can achieve that in 2017, maybe we have a chance.

With that said, the Giants take one of the 4 OL at #23, starting with Cam Robinson, Garrett Bolles (man, can this guy run), Forrest Lamp, or Ryan Ramczyk. With 3 OL becoming free agents next year you hold your nose and start picking replacements (I'm worried about Pugh leaving).

In the 2nd round I think either TE Engram or Shaheen should be available. Help Eli out in the red zone and make Marshall, OBJ, and Shepard better by spreading the defense out. Wouldn't it be nice to have a passing game that scares defensive coordinators? Should help the running game out too.

In round 3 draft a robot. What? A robot? Yeah, because robots are going to take all of our jobs someday so you might as well just get used to it.

Sigh.

Obviously it depends on who's available but DT (bye Big Hank), another OL (there are some nice guards and centers available this year), CB (deep draft for CBs) and safety (will Darian Thompson be ready?) are all considerations. How about PK Zane Gonzalez out of ASU? It would be nice not to have to bring a free agent kicker in annually.

Anyway, it's nice to be back in the playoffs and have a relevant team again. Hopefully we are just a few pieces away on offense to contend for the title.

Good luck with all of your mock drafts and, as always, Draft Day Springs Eternal.
Happy draft day!
