And wildly expensive theme parks ?

And either you live on the West Coast, (or will be visiting with small children); try Oakland's Fairyland. It opened in 1950, and basically nothing has changed.

I used to live literally across the street from it.

It's awesome in many ways, but there are certainly some creepy aesthetics about it. There's something kind of depressing or disturbing about theme park attractions that are in ill repair, and Children's Fairyland has them in spades.
I do agree, it could use a fresh coat of paint ...

But the idea that they haven't sold their soul for the "almighty dollar" is refreshing (even though they're right in the middle of the high tech industry).

The puppet show is a first class throw-back (how many of today's little kids will be able to say they saw something like this).

The highlight was the goats walking on the barn roof ! It's amazing how those animals can jump !

It's just that some of its shortcomings remind me of Krusty the Klown gags. It's not quite Kamp Krusty, but it could be like the free jagged metal Krusty-O that is included in every box:
