would be surprised to hear that the game has changed to emphasize hard throwers.
The difference is that those guys (if you are old enough to have seen them) did not throw MAX effort every pitch. They worked hitters, situations. They reached back when they needed it. It wasn't all about max velocity. They knew how to PITCH. Up, down, in , out, change speeds.

Difference is that now, it's all about the gun. With the exception of Ryan (and that was towards the end of his career), no one was charting the speed of each pitch on the scoreboard & TV. I've had my doubts about the legitimacy of these guns since 10 years ago,a SP that hit the low 90's was considered a gem .Now,low 90's is nothing. From the time kids are in HS, the gun is on them. Scouts don't want SPs under 6 foot & even that is considered small. Bigger, stronger & much faster is what they want which is why we see so many more arm injuries from SPs who are pitching far less innings than the Gibsons,Marichals,Drysdales,Koufaxs,Seavers & Ryans ever did!

Would Catfish Hunter, or Whitey Ford, or Jimmy Key even get a look today?
Sure they would - Dallas Keuchel doesn't throw hard at all.

Good example. But he is clearly an exception in today's game for a top of the rotation starter
