other than take BPA. Costs go up, same for whatever OLineman we draft this year when their contract comes up.
People get way too attached to these FA numbers.
yeah -- so does the front office -- Pugh and Richburg are going to get contracts for about $10 million per year -- how the heck can the Giants afford to pay 5 lineman (OV, JPP, Snacks, Pugh, Richburg) a combined $64 million/yer -- add QB and 3 CBs is another $40 million -- that leaves $64 million for the other 42 players on the team
you have to draft premium players in round 1 and 2
but there's always a way. But you don't take a guy that may not be BPA in round 1 just because you think you can't afford or don't want to pay someone next offseason.
as well as having the most impact on the game itself.
But we are talking about a Guard and Center, so at what point do we just prioritize cost at every position (which is effectively what is being suggested by saying our LG and Center could command too much)?
Continue to draft DE/CB/WR/LT early and figure the rest out elsewhere in the draft and FA. We are going to have to get creative but taking a guy that isn't ranked at the top of our board just to offset a future cost is a mistake, IMO, especially at a non-premier position.
If you take your math to another step. Both Pugh and Richburg will be on first year of contract and probably combined will be 10 mill. There will also be 12 players on rookie contracts lets say 700,000 = 8.4 mil. So 10 mil saving on Pugh and Richburg plus 10 mil cap increase going to 84 mil - 8.4 mil for the rookie contract. Which means roughly 75 mil for the other 30.
It does make you realize you need to do a better job drafting in rounds 3-7 than what the Giants have been doing to keep costs down.

amen to that -- Rounds 3-7 and the street FAs is what separates the cream from the rest of the teams
I'm not saying don't draft a Guard early. I'm saying don't draft one if he isn't toward the top of your board. I'd be happy with Lamp, but if they have 4 or 5 defenders ranked ahead of him (not that we'd know), than I think its probably a foolish decision.

I understand what youre saying -- but $ value ads to the Olineman's ranking I assure you --
if an impact player - a blue chipper falls -- or comes close enough to make it worth trading up for - then all bets are off -- but if one or more of the big four Olinemen is there at 23 and no blue chip prospect -- that's what they are going to pick as sure as I am writing this post
He's a tackle as others have said and this shouldn't alter 1st round
Unless it involves a trade down. I really wouldn't mind a trade down with Atlanta to pick up ideally a #2 but at minimum a #3. Get 5 picks in the 1st 4 rounds and dedicate 2 of those to offensive line. The hope would be that you can pick up someone like Moten that could start at right tackle from day 1. The second guy you would hope can become a serviceable guard in year 2 or at least someone who can complete for a job.
Depending on how that goes, you may be handcuffed to drafting a guard to replace Pugh in the 1st 2 rounds. I would hope that we net a #4 for Hankins next year and probably repeat the process of selecting 2 OL within the 1st 4 rounds again.
I just can't see paying Pugh what we would have to.
wouldn't that mean he had a good season? I can't for the life of me figure out why he'd still get these top offers if he's hurt again or has a bad season.
Supply and demand definitely plays a role, but if he has a good season I want the Giants to pay him and keep him.
Pugh and Richburg can cash in big if they stay healthy AND play 'really good' and we absolutely want them to stay healthy AND 'play really good' this is a good problem. Very worst case scenario is you have to decide which one to long term and which one to franchise tag.
Pugh is getting @25+ million guaranteed and an average of $9 million per year. From NYG or someone else out there.
Tough to swallow.
He's always been a good kid and played well when he's in but contracts like that are cap killers.
Robinson or Lamp in Rd 1 unless they love one of the LBs. Asiata in Rd 2? Either way mediocre to good players getting 10 million w huge upnfront cash has got to be scaring some GMs. I think it's a result of the proliferation of the spread making it harder and harder to find OL guys.
Tough to swallow.
It's a good time to be an Offensive lineman period

my bad -- yes he's a Right Tackle
I'm not down on Pugh for injury, but I would think that becomes a factor in contract negotiations. Pugh hasn't played a full season in the last years.

Only 1 year they haven't done that and that year was a disaster pick - Wilson

And they supposedly had Cordy Glenn rated higher.
