We used a #10 pick on him last year.
At the time, it was said that Eli would be a Top 5 pick THIS year. The first CB taken this year was Marshon Lattimore at #11. How does Eli's draft profile measure up to the guys this year?
Eli Apple played more snaps than DRC - and allowed the Giants to move DRC inside to slot corner. He was supposed to be more raw than he proved to be. I didn't expect him to play as much as he did as a rookie.
he would be farther down in this draft, before the guys with all the hype today have ever taken an NFL snap.
Eli Apple is an elite talent that is a clear 1st round talent in last year's draft as well as this year's draft. I think he would've come off the board around the same position in this year's draft if he was in it.
Although Lattimore and Conley probably had better tape at OSU...
...they both went into the draft with flags that Apple didn't have. For Lattimore - who seems to be a notch above the other two guys - it was the nagging hamstring problems. No matter how good Lattimore is, he can't cover anybody in the tub. For Conley, there's the hotel incident that is - at a minimum - a PR concern. Even without that issue, a lot of scouts seem to have graded Apple higher, or about even.
Apple had technique issues that were mostly attributed to inexperience. I think it's fair to say he's a top-twenty pick in any draft, though in some years a couple of CBs might have gone ahead of him.

According to Pro-football-reference DRC played 734 snaps and Eli Apple played 700.
Plus, Eli Apple was the 10th overall pick, raw or not he really has to be on the field at least 63% of the snaps or more or you need to reconsider taking him.
With this CBA I don't think teams have the luxury of "grooming" players or developing/red-shirting them a year like in the olden days. They need to learn on the job or you waste 25% of their rookie value.
Didn't look stiff to me. Looked like his technique was raw and his footwork needs refining which we knew when we drafted him. He made strides as the year progressed once he put the injury behind him. Also helped when his mother shut yer yap and let him focus on his game. He's going to be a very, very good player for us. This isn't another Aaron Ross.
but I don't think he goes in the top 10 this year..
Also you gotta understand that Apple played against the 2rd or 3rd best WR and had a great secondary to support him.. There was a huge drop off from Jenkins and DRC to Apple.. Both of the other CBs were top 5 cb in the league last year..
There's no question he's behind Lattimore and Conley imo.
Apple has good straight line speed but his hips are stiff and he consistently had problems finding the ball down the field
2nd round
Not a lot of 20 yo rookie cbs walk into the league and play press man right away on a consistent basis. He definitely held his own.
I think it was a mistake to ask him to play so much press. Shouvlr just let him play man cover.

Apple played fewer snaps than DRC. Apple played more snaps per game. Apple played 14 games; DRC played 15.
