Sy'56's BPAs entering Day Two of the 2017 Draft

Big Blue Blogger : 4/28/2017 5:31 am
Again, many thanks to Sy'56 for sharing his insights on this year's draft class. Here's a snapshot of the status after Round One, based on his grades:

Sy's four elite or near-elite prospects were all taken in the top eleven picks:
92 DE Myles Garrett – 6’5/262 – Texas A& M
91 S Jamal Adams – 6’0/211 – LSU
88 DE Solomon Thomas – 6’3/273 – Stanford
86 CB Marshon Lattimore – 6’0/192 – Ohio State

Of the other eighteen prospects Sy graded at 83 or higher (Call them his "red-chip" group), eight are off the board:
85 DE Jonathan Allen – 6’3/286 – Alabama
85 TE David Njoku – 6’4/246 – Miami
84 LB Jarrad Davis – 6’2/230 – Florida
84 S Malik Hooker – 6’1/206- Ohio State
84 TE Evan Engram – 6’3/234 – Ole Miss
84 WR Corey Davis – 6’3/209 - Western Michigan
83 DE Derek Barnett – 6’3/259 – Tennessee
83 WR Mike Williams – 6’4/218 – Clemson

Notably, ten of these red-chip prospects remain, and most (all?) play positions of need for the Giants:
85 CB Kevin King – 6’3/192 – Washington
84 DE Demarcus Walker – 6’4/280 – Florida State
84 DE Jordan Willis – 6’5/250 – Kansas State
84 DT Chris Wormley – Michigan – 6’5/298
84 G/C Forrest Lamp – 6’4/309 – Western Kentucky
83 G/C Cam Robinson – 6’5/328 – Alabama
83 RB Dalvin Cook – 5’10/210 - Florida State
83 S Desmond King – 5’11/200- Iowa
83 S Budda Baker – 5’10/192 – Washington
83 WR Zay Jones – 6’2/201 – East Carolina

South of 83 - as one would expect - the percentage of players still available continues to rise, though only slightly.

Sy bestowed low or marginal first-round grades of 80-82 on eighteen players. Seven of this group are off the board:
82 CB Gareon Conley – 6’0/195 – Ohio State
82 TE OJ Howard – 6’6/251 – Alabama
80 CB TreDavious White – 6’0/197 – LSU
80 QB Mitch Trubisky - North Carolina - 6'2/222
80 RB Christian McCaffrey – 5’11/202 - Stanford
80 RB Leonard Fournette – 6’0/240 – LSU
80 WR John Ross – 5’10/188 – Washington

Eleven remain:
81 CB Quincy Wilson – 6’1/213 – Florida
81 G/C Dion Dawkins – 6’4/314 – Temple
81 S Marcus Maye – 6’0/212 – Florida
80 CB Ahkello Witherspoon – 6’2/190 – Colorado
80 CB Fabian Moreau – 6’0/206 – UCLA
80 DT Caleb Brantley – 6’3/307 – Florida
80 G/C Isaac Asiata – 6’3/335 – Utah
80 OT Conor McDermott – 6’8/307 – UCLA
80 RB Kareem Hunt – 5’11/216 – Toledo
80 WR Cooper Kupp – 6’2/204 – Eastern Washington
80 WR ArDarius Stewart – 5’11/204 – Alabama

Sitting at #55, the Giants should have a shot at some players whom Sy would regard as well worth the pick - even excluding those who might be off their board, like Cook and Brantley. In addition to the 21 listed above, there's an equal number with grades of 78 or 79, which equate roughly to the second round:
79 CB Jourdan Lewis – 5’10/186 – Michigan
79 G/C Dan Feeney – 6’4/305 – Indiana
79 QB DeShone Kizer - Notre Dame - 6'4/233
79 S John Johnson – 6’0/202 – Boston College
79 WR Chad Hansen – 6’2/202 – California
79 WR JuJu Smith Schuster – 6’1/213 – USC
78 CB Chidobe Awuzie – 6’0/202 – Colorado
78 DE Tanoh Kpassagnon – 6’7/289 – Villanova
78 DE Daeshon Hall – 6’6/260 – Texas A& M
78 DT Dalvin Tomlinson – 6’3/310 – Alabama
78 DT Montravius Adams – 6’4/304 – Auburn
78 G/C Dorian Johnson – 6’5/300 – Pittsburgh
78 LB Tyus Bowser – 6’3/247 – Houston
78 LB Samson Ebukam – 6’2/240 – Eastern Washington
78 OT Will Holden – 6’7/311 – Vanderbilt
78 OT Taylor Moton – 6’5/319 – Western Michigan
78 RB Alvin Kamara – 5’10/214 – Tennessee
78 RB Marlon Mack – 5’11/213 – South Florida
78 S Obi Melifonwu – 6’4/224 – Connecticut
78 TE Jordan Leggett – 6’5/258 – Clemson
78 WR Dede Westbrook – 6’0/176 – Oklahoma

Lastly, I'll note that thirteen players with grades of 79 or lower were taken last night, with "reaches" most prominent among QBs and edge rushers:
79 CB Adoree Jackson – 5’10/186 – USC
79 LB Reuben Foster – 6’0/229 – Alabama
79 LB Haason Reddick – 6’1/237 – Temple
79 OT Garrett Bolles – 6’5/297 – Utah
79 OT Ryan Ramczyk – 6’6/310 – Wisconsin
79 S Jabrill Peppers – 5’11/213 – Michigan
78 LB TJ Watt – 6’4/252 – Wisconsin
77 CB Marlon Humphrey – 6’1/198 – Alabama
77 QB Deshaun Watson - Clemson - 6'2/221
76 DE Taco Charlton – Michigan – 6’6/272
76 QB Patrick Mahomes - Texas Tech - 6'2/225
75 DE Takkarist McKinley – UCLA – 6’2/250
72 DE Charles Harris – 6’3/253 – Missouri

the Giants have to come out of the night with 2 of the 3: LB, DL, OL. I don't go RB tonight. Get one on Day 3, or just sign Blount.

Matt,

How about Moton, KPass, Bowser? Or Walker, Asiata, Cunningham?

Or McDowell, Feeney, Williams?

Lots of good players.
I would love a DE or OL in the 2nd Β
Jay on the Island : 4/28/2017 10:23 am : link
but playing Wormley next to Harrison would be very exciting.

No new names yet today ... leftover from yesterday are Wormley, and I suspect they like Bowser and Lamp.
I like Asiata and McDermott Β
JonC : 4/28/2017 10:31 am : link
and believe Giants worked out the latter.
Brantley Β
bc4life : 4/28/2017 10:32 am : link
will be drafted, I bet. He's obviously going to slide but some team will take him probably on Day 3 or if they are shameless enough today.
I know it's unworkable Β
bc4life : 4/28/2017 10:34 am : link
but for players with stuff like this hanging in the air - should have some type of board, investigative body - if it's "likely" they did it. No team could draft them - the alternative is that teams unconcerned about character issues get rewarded with talented players.

I think Β
Pete in MD : 4/28/2017 10:45 am : link
McDermott has a good chance being there at 55. It would be crazy if they took Sy's #1 TE and OT in the first two rounds.
.... Β
Chris684 : 4/28/2017 10:58 am : link
At #55 I would go DT. McDowell, Wormley or Tomlinson.

Come back at #87 for Asiata, Dawkins or McDermott.

Yesterday Dottino mentioned two points for Friday night. Trades, specifically up could be in play for rounds 2 and 3. Somaje Perine could be on the radar.

Nobody drafted La'el Collins... and a team unconcerned about character issues still profited. I'm not sure a good solution exists - at least not within the existing draft framework.

Sy's #1 TE was Njoku -- but Engram was pretty close in ranking -- he considered them, roughly, equal "back to back" talent
It's probably too much to hope for Wormley to drop to the Giants Β

About McDermott...

Needs more strength but lots of upside.

Not Β
DanMetroMan : 4/28/2017 11:38 am : link
defending Mixon even 1% (what he did was horrible) but he comes off as more intelligent/well thought out in interviews than I expected. I think he has pretty decent odds of keeping his nose clean and having a great career.
One additional note about Conor McDermott: Β
Big Blue Blogger : 4/28/2017 11:52 am : link
He's only about four months younger than Garett Bolles, whose age seems to be a big deal. And they are each missing a consonant from their first names. Coincidence? I don't think so.
Obi Melifonwu Β
ChicagoMarty : 4/28/2017 12:01 pm : link

Obi is the JPP of db's

Tremendous versatility

Yeah he is and he may be rehabilitated, but the Giants would never take a guy who did that after the scandal with Josh Brown.
Here is Sy's 'Minority Report' on McDermott: Β
Big Blue Blogger : 4/28/2017 1:07 pm : link
Quote:
1 – Conor McDermott – 6’8/307 – UCLA: 80

Summary: Fifth year senior. Two time 2nd team all Pac 12 selection and 2-plus year starter. Was a big time high school basketball player, winning a Mr. Basketball award in 2011 as a senior. McDermott has tools that don’t come around very often. He is a better athlete that he is on tape, but lacks the confidence to trust it. He bails on his technique too often and will make him look horrific at times. If he can be put in to the right system and really hone in on strength gains, there is a potential here that most tackles simply do not have. He is a risk, but one with a high potential reward.

*I’m aware there isn’t anyone out there with a #1 ranking on McDermott. While I do like him and the upside, it is likely more a result of just not liking this OT class as a whole. For the record, Robinson and Lamp were graded out above him, but I am keeping them in the OG group. McDermott had an awful, awful game against a healthy Myles Garrett and I think that performance unfairly stuck to him in some peoples eyes. What I saw late in the year was an enormous frame with plenty of room for growth that had a violent initial punch and really athletic footwork. In time, I think he is a quality starting LT.

Upside Pro Comparison: Nate Solder – NE
He's not kidding about the game against Garrett.

Cam Robinson had a very good game against Garrett, I thought Β
Anakim : 4/28/2017 1:09 pm : link
There is that. Robinson isn't short on talent and he has a very high ceiling as a potential franchise LT, IMO, but a very low floor also.
This is exactly what I did last night while watching the first round.. Β

given that a giant D nose tackle may be found later to replace Hank ...then we are not too shabby.

but...a first tier DLer plus a starting (better) OLG would have been nice.

I'd love a slight trade up for Lamp, assuming price is right (like a 5/6th rounder packaged tops)
Lamp, Asiata, Robinson Β
annexOPR : 4/28/2017 4:23 pm : link

ideally I'd love to go OL/DL in 2/3 depending on who's available.

Lamp would be a great get Β
Jay on the Island : 4/28/2017 5:08 pm : link
and would be insurance in the event that Pugh prices himself out of the Giants range which is very likely IMO. I would actually prefer it if the Giants came away with either Lamp or Dawkins in round 2, a DE in round 3, then Conor McDermott in round 4. Lamp or Dawkins could battle for the starting RG or RT job immediately. The OL depth would be excellent with Hart, Jerry, Jones, and McDermott.
My top 5 Β
jayg5 : 4/28/2017 5:14 pm : link
Wormley
Willis
Feeney
Rivers
Walker.
Don't see it with Walker Β
RAIN : 4/28/2017 5:40 pm : link
in 2.

He doesn't really disengage from blocking. I see the athlete and the strength, I don't see the technique to get off blocks.

He has to use his hands better. He's not big enough for tackle and not disruptive enough to be a threat off the edge. His production I see, was mainly off of persistence.

I see a tough pro transition for him, and him lasting for awhile yet. We'll see. I think we can do better with immediate impact: Tomlinson fits, Dawkins fits, Kamara would be exciting, and if Bowser or a starting corner falls .. I think these guys would be more capable of contributing right away.

I agree...there are so many opportunities for unsubstantiated rumors to affect these players. Or maybe they are substantiated and they should matter. Who knows?
Am I the only one hoping for Pocic in the 3rd? Β
Biteymax22 : 4/28/2017 6:14 pm : link
Guy can play both guard positions, center and RT. Next year we have Pugh, Richburg and Fluker's contracts expiring, we hope to be able to resign the first two but have to be cognisent we will need to give big money to Beckham and Collins the following year. Pocic would be able to slide in and start in 18' for whomever we have the hardest time re-signing.

For Rd 2 I like the best available LB or DL, hopefully Bowser falls, but it may not happen.
